The reliability of service is related to the kind and the number of service resources in grid. The kind and the number of service resources often change, so the service reliability is variable. In this paper, we propose a reliability measurement model for service in grid, which is based on the dynamic characteristic of service resource. In this model, the dynamic state of service is divided into a series of relative stabilized states, and the difference of each relative stabilized state denotes a change of the service resource in the kind or the number, we propose three index values, namely the reliability of service, the mathematical expectation of reliability and the mean square deviation of reliability, to measure the reliability quality of service. In order to show the feasibility and the availab.lity of this method, a case study is described. The results show that it is feasible and efficient to measure the reliability of service in grid. © 2009 IEEE.

Construct pairwise test suites based on the Bak-Sneppen model of biological evolution

Pairwise testing, which requires that every combination of valid values of each pair of system factors be covered by at lease one test case, plays an important role in software testing since many faults are caused by unexpected 2-way interactions among system factors. Although meta-heuristic strategies like simulated annealing can generally discover smaller pairwise test suite, they may cost more time to perform search, compared with greedy algorithms. We propose a new method, improved Extremal Optimization (EO) based on the Bak-Sneppen (BS) model of biological evolution, for constructing pairwise test suites and define fitness function according to the requirement of improved EO. Experimental results show that improved EO gives similar size of resulting pairwise test suite and yields an 85% reduction in solution time over SA.

A large-scale image retrieval system for the WWW, named VAST (VisuAl & SemanTic image search), is presented in this paper. Based on the existing inverted file and visual feature clusters, we form a semantic network on top of the keyword association on the visual feature clusters. The system is able to automatically combine keyword and visual features for retrieval by the semantic network The combination is automatic, simple, and very fast, which is suitable for large-scale web dataset Meanwhile, the retrieval takes advantage of the semantic contents of the images in addition to the low-level features, which remarkably improves the retrieval precision. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the system.

Current grid information service is centralized or hierarchical and proves inefficient as grid scale rapidly increases. The introduction of P2P techniques into grids breaks an encouraging path. However, frequent join and departure of resource nodes require strong self-organization capacity of system to maintain their rigid structure. Moreover, arranging identifier space for P2P nodes is knotty and has great impact on system performance. If the identifier space is too large, some nodes will be overloaded. On the contraiy, small identifier space will bring the same problem as millennium bug. To address the issues, this paper proposes a scalab.e DHT-based (Distributed Hash Table) Information service (DIS) for grid system, which organizes grid resources into a DHT ring based on VO (Virtual Organization). To save the identifier space while retaining the scalab.lity and system performance, only stable VOs can join DIS via a new DHT node, whereas volatile VOs join DIS through being the sub-domain of other VO. Experimental results show that DIS provides rapid resource query, strong scalab.lity and high throughput, meanwhile avoiding the key node failure as well as the bottleneck problem. Peer-to-peer (P2P) has become an important computing model because of its adaptation, selforganization and autonomy. But how to organize dynamic nodes in P2P networks efficiently for gaming message passing services is still a challenge. This paper present an approach, named D-overlay, a delay-aware overlay for gaming services, to implement node clustering based on link delay of nodes communications in the P2P network. This approach measures the delays among peers, explores the node connectivity together with the connection quality. Then, it builds a service ring for each peer according to its latency status, and keeps the low latency among neighbors by periodical adjustments. D-overlay improves the extensibility and reliability. One system, called PKTown, has been deployed based on D-overlay in CERNET of China. © 2008 IEEE.

In order to achieve low delay services in VoIP, we can use application-layer routing scheme, which is to find proper relay nodes to intermediate voice packets from the source peer to the destination peer. The difficulty of the scheme is how to find the proper relay nodes, which we call relay problem. This paper presents a new application-layer routing scheme, called DPLM, to resolve relay problem. We introduced the mechanism in detail, and evaluated our mechanism in NS2 network simulation environment and got a high relay node hit ratio result, which confirms the feasibility of a real system. Also we make a comparison with traditional schemes, and the results show that DPLM scheme has good performances. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Peers in multiple P2P applications execute overlapped operations with different implementation, like neighbour management, resource publish/lookup, delay investigation, which leads to poor interoperability and unnecessary network load. Peers contribute their resources only when they stay in same application. We propose a P2P middleware, called Ripple, to accomplish common functions in a layered architecture. Ripple manages all peers running various applications in a uniform substrate overlay network. The substrate overlay is designed with a hybrid topology. This hybrid topology does not aim at only a particular type of applications, but also enables the flexibility for various applications. Our work is an attempt to address common needs of P2P applications, which may simplify the development and improve the performance of P2P networks, as well as mitigate the sampling stress to physical networks. © 2008 IEEE.

Text categorization is the process of assigning documents to a set of previously fixed categories. It is widely used in many data-oriented management applications. Many popular algorithms for text categorization have been proposed, such as Naïve Bayes, k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Support Vector Machine (SVM). However, those classification approaches do not perform well in every case, for example, SVM can not identify categories of documents correctly when the texts are in cross zones of multicategories, k-NN cannot effectively solve the problem of overlapped categories borders. In this paper, we propose an approach named as Multi-class SVM-kNN (MSVM-kNN) which is the combination of SVM and k-NN. In the approach, SVM is first used to identify category borders, then k-NN classifies documents among borders. MSVM-kNN can overcome the shortcomings of SVM and k-NN and improve the performance of multi-class text classification. The experimental results show MSVM-kNN performs better than SVM or kNN. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper proposes a novel parallel data transfer mechanism to improve the performance of data transfer in grid environment. It utilizes the servers distributed in grid system and selects some of them as the proxy servers. It introduces the method of how to select the proxy server. Then data are divided into several parts and sent through the selected proxy servers with different physical links. By that, it can effectively improve the performance of data transfer. © 2008 IEEE.

The research about the interaction between grid environments and users is becoming popular. Many scientists propose the integration for Web 2.0 technologies and grid computing. In this paper, we propose a flexible Web-based framework for grid applications - WAGA, which tries to bridge the gap between grid middleware and grid applications. WAGA provides a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) way for the programming for grid applications by adopting participation, interaction and sharing features of Web 2.0 technology. With WAGA, a grid user is able to use the grid resources and to develop grid applications without understanding the underlying complexity of grids. WAGA is composed with a Web GUI (called WAGA-designer) and someWeb-based APIs. WAGA-designer is used by grid users to develop application-based Web portal, and the WebAPIs are used by the WAGA-designer. The use case study shows that WAGA is flexible for grid users, and the performance evaluation shows that WAGA works with high efficiency.
