Virtualization technology improves the resource utilization, but also raises the probability of resource contention. Thus, it arises one problem, namely how about performance isolation among VMs. To answer the question, benchmarks are highly required to evaluate performance isolation. However, few benchmarks to give solutions to the problem are availab.e. Especially, there does not exist a micro-benchmark to measure how the performance of individual primitive operations varies with the type of misbehavior. In the paper, we present VITS - a micro-benchmark to evaluate the performance isolation of virtualization system. VITS Test Suite can test both software and hardware performance isolation. It is mainly consisted of six interference programs, which respectively test the performance isolation of cache, memory bandwidth, memory space, CPU, network and disk. VITS Test Suite provides results for user to analyze the performance isolation problem of the virtualization system along with the underlying hardware. Besides, we test Xen using VITS test suit. The experimental results show that, the cache, memory and disk performance isolation still have some big weak points to improve, in other words, the current virtualization system Xen is still unfair in fine-grained resource share.

Transactional memory (TM) is a parallel programming concept. Existing consistency protocols in distributed transactional memory system consume too much bandwidth and bring high latency. In this paper, we propose our Transaction Memory Consistency Protocol (TMCP), and point the new features compared to the current protocols. After formulating our model and analyzing the performance, we found both too much and too little execution time will cause more conflicts, given that the execution time of transaction population follows Gamma distribution. We indicate that it is important to adjust the execution time to a reasonable value to improve performance.

Partial order reduction techniques have been used to combat the state explosion problem in model checking procedures for concurrent systems with probabilistic behaviors. There are some results that give criteria on applying partial order reduction for verifying quantitative time properties and reward-based properties on actions. However, there are many situations that reward-based properties are expressed on states rather than on actions because actions are triggered in no time and the quantities can not be obtained easily. This paper presents reduction criteria for a probabilistic temporal logic that allows specification of restrictions on quantitative measures given by spatial resources function for the states of the considered system and provides the proof of the correctness. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper proposes a generalized model by extending Markov chain with spatial resources lab.ls, which can describe the functional and performance properties and some basic characteristics such as nondeterminacy and randomicity. The syntax and semantics of the new model are shown based on the existing temporal logics such as CSRL and pathCSRL. The model checking procedure is discussed and thus the practicability of the new model is intuitive. Based on the existing models, the proposed model includes spatial resources lab.ls only by adding the spatial information to the existing lab.ls of states, so the treatment of the state explosion problem is similar to that in the existing models. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper propose a method for sentence ordering in multi-doucument summarization task, which combine support vector machine (SVM) and Grey Model(GM). Firstly, the method train the SVM with sentences of source documents and predict sentences sequence of summary as primary dataset. Secondly, using Grey Model to process the primary dataset, and achieve the final sequence of summary sentences. Experiments on 100 summ1aries showed this method provide a much higher precision than probabilistic model in sentence ordering task. © 2010 IEEE.

Agent-based grid data loading method aims at integrating heterogeneous hospitals' information systems into a medical information exchange platform based on grid middleware. It collects distributed data sets for decision support system, which makes data sources expanded from independent database modes to medical information systems in wide area. Virtual data access with grid service improves data security and makes data modification in local system more flexible. HL7 protocol and middleware are utilized to transform HL7 data into various local data structures for keeping the independence of each hospital information system and providing more convenience and expansibility for various medical applications. © 2009 IEEE.

Intrusion Prevention system (IPS) has been an effective tool to detect and prevent unwanted attempts, which are mainly through network and system vulnerabilities, at accessing and manipulating computer systems. Intrusion detection and prevention are two main functions of IPS. As attacks are becoming massive and complex, the traditional centralized IPSes are incapable of detecting all those attempts. The existing distributed IPSes, mainly based on mobile agent, have some serious problems, such as weak security of mobile agents, response latency, large code size. In this paper, we propose a customized intrusion prevention system, VMFence, in distributed virtual computing environment to simplify the complexity of the management. In VMFence, the states of detection processes vary with those of Virtual Machines (VMs), which are described by Deterministic Finite Automata (DFA). The detection processes, each of which detects one virtual machine, reside in a privileged virtual machine. The processes run synchronously and outside of VMs in order to achieve high performance and security. The experimental results also show VMFence has higher detection efficiency than traditional intrusion detection systems and little impact on the performance of the monitored VMs. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Silicosis is one of the most serious occupational diseases in China. Radiologist information comes from chest radiographs, in which the most important parts are lung fields and ribs. It is necessary to distinguish lung fields and ribs from other organs. The anatomical knowledge-based lung segmentation can improve the accuracy of segmentation and solve the problems of opened region and lost clavicle region. The curve model-based rib segmentation can acquire more accurate rib location information, and provide more efficient orientation for latter diagnosis. These two methods are also deployed in grid environment to get higher efficiency when processing massive and distributed medical data for silicosis diagnosis. Experiments show that the two proposed algorithms can meet the latter medical requirements for chest radiograph with higher accuracy. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Due to the prohibitively long time when detailedly simulating a realistic benchmark to its completion, sampling is frequently used to reduce the simulation time. However, it may often require profiling or iterative simulations to determine the sampling parameters. This paper employs the generation procedure of trisection Cantor set, one classic fractal, to select instructions simulated in detail as an approach to enable a simple and fast micro-architecture simulation. Randomly selected six benchmarks from SPEC CPU2000 are tested on the simulator, CantorSim, which implements the trisection Cantor fractal approach. The results show that it is very easy to use this approach and it can achieve actual average acceleration of 23.4% over SMARTS[3] while the accuracy only reduces marginally. CantorSims accuracy is validated against the sim-outorder and is accurate in a 3.2% error margin. Similar CPI relative errors with the same parameter values of experiments on simulators of different processor models indicate that this approach is microarchitecture independent and can be applied to well predict the performance of new micro-architecture design.

In grid and cloud computing infrastructures, the integrity of a computing platform is a critical security requirement in order to provide secure and honest computing environments to service providers and resource consumers. However, due to the fact that software components running on a single platform are usually provided and maintained by different authorities which are potentially untrusted to each other, the problem to monitor and protect runtime system integrity become very challenging and has not been well addressed yet. In this paper, we present a virtualization based dynamic integrity protection method which ensures that only appropriate authorities can control over their components without interfering with other component providers or authorities. In our solution, integrity requirements defined by the authorities of upper components (e.g., service middleware and applications) are respected by preventing the underlying components (e.g., operating system) from exposing their sensitive data, which can be caused by update of the underlying components or other malicious actions. We implement our solution on Xen-based platform, and our evaluation results show that the solution is effective for integrity protection with acceptable performance overhead. © 2009 IEEE.
