With the development of client virtualization technology, it has become an important tendency to apply soft real-time applications in virtual environment. Currently, most schedulers in VMM (i.e., virtual machine monitor) take the fairly sharing of processor resources and load balancing as a main concern, while show less regard to application diversity and I/O responsiveness. This would be unable to meet the requirement for latency-sensitive tasks, such as audio application. Audio stream may suffer from severe input buffer overrun or output buffer underrun, especially in the case that there is no real-time guarantee on virtualized clients under heavy load. In this paper, we introduce experiments to illustrate that current scheduler in Xen does a poor job in guaranteeing fluent audio playing, and then formulate the fluent playing conditions a scheduler should satisfy. A scheduling strategy with soft real-time support is proposed to improve the responsiveness of latency-sensitive guests. To implement our proposition, we extend the Credit scheduler by using flexible time slice and real-time priority. Our solution is audio-aware and capable of adjusting the real-time priority of guest domains adaptively, achieving a better experience for end-users. The experimental results show that audio glitches can be completely eliminated via our extended scheduler even when the system load is very high.

Congestion in DTN is a prominent problem due to constrained resource, intermittent link and long propagation delay. Traditional congestion control mechanisms based on end-to-end feedback and rate control fail to work in such network environments. Considering the characteristics of DTN, we propose a new contact-based congestion avoidance mechanism (C2AM). The contact history and queuing information are both exploited to obtain the average sojourn time of each incoming message. Using this metric, we try to deter incoming messages with long sojourn time and large size. Motivated by Little's law, we introduce the average storage cost of each message. To our best knowledge, this is the first case where contact information is used to assist congestion control in DTNs. Using simulation, we evaluate the C2AM mechanism and show that it can avoid and alleviate congestion in DTN greatly and improves network performance. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

The most cost effective approach to study the performance of virtualization technology is to use the benchmark. In this paper, we present a new evaluation methodology to deploy a benchmark evaluation with a Benchmark Object. By encapsulating three steps of traditional benchmark processes and implementing an instance from a Benchmark Object, users need not evaluate manually. Furthermore, a Benchmark Object simplifies the use of benchmarks and saves a great deal of duplicate work to deploy, configure and execute benchmarks and analyze their results. We develop the virtualization system performance evaluation management facility to implement and manage the concept of a Benchmark Object. We discuss this performance evaluation tool in detail, test the performance of the tool, and draw some conclusions. © 2010 IEEE.

The maintenance of unstructured data for a large data-related system is still a hard nut to crack, especially in the multi-disciplined virtual experiment platform (MDVEP), where lots of unstructured data are produced, small in size and coming from various applications. This paper presents a new storage system named VESS for unstructured data from MDVEP, which can improve the performance of the system and simplify the development of upper-layer applications. It provides HTTP-based data request method as system user-friendly interface. Index table relying on a universal metadata file is used to ensure the consistency and integrity of replicas. Message queue is adopted to sequence modification operations and guarantee consistency, while signature-based authentication guarantees the security. Experimental results show that VESS can serve as a data storage service for virtual experiment with high performance. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Compliance checker is an important component for automated trust negotiation (ATN) to examine whether the credentials match the access control policies. A good design for compliance checker helps to speed up trust establishment between parties during the negotiation, and can also improve negotiation efficiency. Unfortunately, it has been noted that compliance checker has got little attention in design and implementation. On the contrary, more work has been spent on the algorithms on how to protect sensitive information. A RT0 based compliance checker (RBCC) model for ATN is presented in this paper. We give its architecture and workflow, and illustrate how it works through a practical example. The case study shows that the model satisfies compliance checker's basic requirements and provides good information feedback mechanism to protect sensitive information. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Failure detection is a basic service for building dependable cloud computing system. Unfortunately, the natural complexity of cloud computing system makes failure detectors much harder to build. In this work, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of FDKeeper, a failure detector for cloud computing system with several features. First, FDKeeper is a failure detector with short detection time, high accuracy and low disruption. Second, FDKeeper is scalable, with communication cost and number of manager nodes scaling linearly with the number of physical nodes, which makes FDKeeper very suitable for large-scale cloud computing system. Third, FDKeeper provides a protocol for failure detection among many cloud computing systems. FDKeeper achieves these features by providing a layered failure detection mechanism, a cluster architecture and a cloud failure detection protocol. The evaluation results show that the detection time for app/kernel layer is less than 600 milliseconds, and 2 seconds for vmm/hardware layer, the accuracy is 100% for all layers, and the disruption is less than 0.27 times per year. As for scalability, the theoretical analysis and experimental results show that there is a linear relationship between the number of nodes used to accomplish the failure detection and the number of nodes in the computing systems, and the growth factor is less than 0.001. Thus we believe FDKeeper is the first failure detector that is fast, reliable, scalable, and viable. As such, it could change the way that a dependable cloud computing system is built. © 2014 ACM.

More and more enterprises are moving beyond server virtualization to desktop virtualization in recent years. In virtualization environments, centralized shared storage systems are generally used to take advantage of virtualization features such as VM migration. Network file system (NFS) is considered to be the best choice in small or medium sized LANs due to its flexibility and low cost. But it becomes the bottleneck when many clients access the server simultaneously, especially when multiple virtual machines access a large amount of data at the same time, such as operation save and restore. In this paper, we present a new method named ComIO to quickly save and restore virtual machines using page compression. Based on the analysis of virtual machines' memory characteristics, we design a fast enhanced characteristic-based compression (ECBC) algorithm. Combined with multi-threaded techniques, the compression tasks are parallelized for significantly shortened compresssion time. Page boundary alignment is proposed to enable wanted page data to be directly extracted from the compressed block. The experimental results demonstrate that compared with Xen, our method ComIO not only greatly reduces the time spent on saving and restoring virtual machines on average, but also indirectly augments the effective storage space. © 2011 IEEE.

Virtualization as a powerful and convenient technique has been widely used recently. Inserting the VMM between the hardware and operation system enables multiple virtual machines simultaneously running on hardware. However, these changes in system architecture, while improving the whole physical computing resources' utilization, also pay a certain price for virtualization. How to measure this part of CPU overhead, and how about the relationship between this part of CPU overhead and virtual machine number and the type of workload executing in virtual machine are two important questions to the further research of virtualization performance. In this paper we provide a system to measure the overhead of virtualization. With this system we could dynamically obtain the utilization of computing resource. Based on the analysis to the results of several experiments, we compare and study the relationship between the different factors and the overhead of virtualization. Finally, we predict the probably trend of the overhead under the impact of some factors. © 2011 IEEE.

Live migration of virtual machines (VM) across distinct physical hosts provides a significant new benefit for administrators of data centers and clusters. Previous migration schemes focused on transferring the run-time memory state of the VM. Those approaches employed memory pre-copy algorithm to synchronize the migrating VM states, which make VM live migration cost much network traffic and application downtime, especially for memory-intensive workloads. This paper describes the design and implementation of a novel approach CR/TR-Motion that adopts checkpointing/recovery and trace/replay technology to provide fast, transparent VM migration. With execution trace logged on the source host, a synchronization algorithm is performed to orchestrate the running source and target VM until they get a consistent state. We also give a formalized characterization about the migration evaluation metrics and make a mathematical analysis about our algorithm. Our scheme can greatly reduce the migration downtime and network bandwidth consumption. Experimental measurements show that our approach can drastically reduce migration overheads compared with pre-copy algorithm: up to 72.4% on application observed downtime, up to 31.5% on total migration time and up to 95.9% on the data to synchronize the VM state, while the application performance overhead due to migration is less than 8.54% on average. As an import trend of cyberspace in the future, cloud computing has attracted much attention from the IT industry. Many research institutions and companies have launched their own cloud platforms, which have virtual machine schedulers to manage the infrastructure resource pool. The virtual machine scheduling modules in these platforms are built in the platform and it is hard for developers to re-program. Since developers cannot design and implement special policies in the platform, the flexibility of the virtual machine scheduler is poor. Furthermore, the schedule architecture which has a firm and unchangeable interface is designed and customized for one kind of cloud platform. It leads to poor portability. To target the problems above, this paper presents a dynamic and reusable scheduling system for cloud infrastructure service, called Cranduler, which introduces the advantages of cluster schedulers to the virtual machine scheduling in cloud infrastructure. The scheduling policies of Cranduler could be dynamically configured by developers. Developers can easily insert the custom policy. In addition, Cranduler provides a set of unified interfaces to the cloud platform, which make the system easily access resources from different cloud platforms and be reused in different cloud platforms. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
