As an import trend of cyberspace in the future, cloud computing has attracted much attention from the IT industry. Many research institutions and companies have launched their own cloud platforms, which have virtual machine schedulers to manage the infrastructure resource pool. The virtual machine scheduling modules in these platforms are built in the platform and it is hard for developers to re-program. Since developers cannot design and implement special policies in the platform, the flexibility of the virtual machine scheduler is poor. Furthermore, the schedule architecture which has a firm and unchangeable interface is designed and customized for one kind of cloud platform. It leads to poor portability. To target the problems above, this paper presents a dynamic and reusable scheduling system for cloud infrastructure service, called Cranduler, which introduces the advantages of cluster schedulers to the virtual machine scheduling in cloud infrastructure. The scheduling policies of Cranduler could be dynamically configured by developers. Developers can easily insert the custom policy. In addition, Cranduler provides a set of unified interfaces to the cloud platform, which make the system easily access resources from different cloud platforms and be reused in different cloud platforms. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Recently, the power of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has largely increased, whereas previous works of intra prediction on the GPU could not efficiently exploit the massive parallel opportunity. The related work only achieves framelevel, slice-level or block-level parallelism. It is a challenge to implement fine-grained parallelism on the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), such as pixel-level and mode-level, because the irregular formulas of intra prediction and the constraints posed by H.264/AVC cause significant branch instructions and the CUDA architecture is inherently not good at handling branches. In this paper, a CUDA-based approach that adopts fine-grained parallelism is presented. By transforming the various prediction formulas to the same form and introducing the predictor unit, an algorithm based on a lookup table is proposed to efficiently eliminate the branches. In addition, the combinatorial frame technique and the optimized encoding order are adopted to maximize the parallelism. Experimental results show that significant encoding time reduction can be achieved and the proposed algorithm outperforms previous works. © 2014 ACM.

In this paper a new approach for building networked embedded software is presented. The approach is based on the composition of reusable components with the addition of a perspective contract principle for modeling non-functional properties. Nonfunctional properties are an important aspect of networked embedded software, and this is why they are modeled separately. As such, the component view presented here differs from traditional component based views, where focus is laid on the functional part. The ideas discussed in the paper have been implemented in a tool. This tool enables the construction of networked embedded software by means of components and perspective contracts. Currently, a queuing network based algorithm that considers all non-functional properties together performs a static analysis on the perspective contracts before execution of the application. © 2006 IEEE.

Mobile devices such as PDAs and cellphones, limited to its' computing and storage capability, are not capable to run ordinary PC applications. But virtualization technology gives us another choice: the software can run on a server (generally in a virtual machine) and the user interface is transmitted to the client. We have developed MoClouDesk, a virtualized desktop architecture for mobile devices, which provides a real virtual working environment. MoClouDesk virtualizes the desktop by forming a desktop environment, similar to local desktop, while all the applications are running on the virtual machine of remote servers. Users can use different applications from cross-platform operating systems, and use them just the same as local applications. Users could personally customize and update the applications list from the application templates library. This paper explores how to build a virtual desktop environment for mobile device. Experiments demonstrate and evaluate its efficiency and effectiveness. © 2011 IEEE.

With the development of computer science, desktop virtualization technology is more and more popular. In virtualized desktop, it is a very significant research to share periphery devices in the client-end computer seamlessly. We implement a device sharing mechanism to extend the universal serial bus in client-end host to the network for server-end host using transparently. This virtual device bus is deployed in the driver layer so that most applications and drivers in virtualized desktop could access remote shared devices through original interface. After deploying the virtual device bus driver, the duplicated virtual device could be accessed just like a real local device. In our implementation, the virtual device bus driver, which is the main module for virtualizing real USB devices and the interface for applications, is OS independent. Experiments show that the mechanism has a very friendly and easy interface to access virtual USB devices, and good performance. © 2011 IEEE.

In modern computer systems, system event logs have always been the primary source for checking the system status. As computer systems become more complex, such as cloud computing systems, the interaction among software and hardware is increasingly frequently. These components will generate enormous log information, including running reports and fault information. The massive data is a great challenge for analysis with manual method. In this paper, we implement a log management and analysis system, which can assist system administrators to understand the real-time status of the entire system, classify logs into different fault types, and determine the root cause of the faults. In addition, we improve the existing fault correlation analysis method based on the results of system log classification. We apply the log management and analysis system to cloud computing environment for evaluation. The results show that our system can classify fault logs effectively and automatically. By using the proposed system, administrators can easily detect the root cause of faults. © 2014 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

In this work, we propose computing resource management system based on Xen VMM and multi-core system, called XenMVM. It adjusts the computing resource dynamically according to the actual workload generated by the applications running in the virtual machine to improve the resource utilization of the computer system. According to the shared L2 cache architecture of multi-core system, we propose the Underlying Layout Aware Scheduling (ULAS) which can schedule the virtual CPUs of virtual machines to the appropriate physical CPUs. The test result shows that ULAS can improve the performance about 4.5%-32.52%. Furthermore, to improve the whole performance of multiple virtual machines and meet the needs of specific jobs (i.e., urgent and I/O intensive) deployed in the virtual machines, a simplified method called Domain-based static priority is adopted in XenMVM. Using case studies we show that our proposal reduces the turnover time of the whole system by 20.45% compared with FCFS scheduling scheme. ©2010 IEEE.

We design and implement a Mandatory Access Control (MAC) system in distributed virtual computing environment, named DVM-MAC, aiming to provide distributed trust through enforcing MAC policies. In DVM-MAC, Prioritized Chinese Wall (PCW) model is implemented to control potential covert channels between VMs in both single node and distributed environment. A policy enforcement module locates inside Xen VMM for better enforcing MAC locally rather than outside the VMM. DVM-MAC adopts centralized architecture for multi-level management and secure transmission of internode policy information. For performance consideration, a specific policy decision and enforcement module for controlling inter-node behaviors is moved out of Xen VMM and up to user space. DVM-MAC authorizes a specific center node named Central Security Server (CSS) to be responsible for the decision making between the nodes as well as leaves the internode policy enforcement module in each node. Through our experiments and data analysis, we verify the correctness, effectiveness, and efficiency in our prototype when implementing PCW model. © 2009 IEEE.

Cloud computing contains many enterprise applications that require from each user to perform authenticate at first step. Then, he will gain a permit from the service provider to access resources at second step. The issue breach remains facing a modern computing model. A more secure scheme is the two-factor authentication (2FA) that requires a second factor (such as finger print, token) with username/password. Nevertheless, the feasibility of 2FA is largely limited by high device cost, malicious attack and the deployment complexity. In this paper, we propose a scheme of 2FA in cloud computing systems that depends on One-Time Password (OTP), Asymmetric Scalar-product Preserving Encryption (ASPE) and RSA digital signature as two factors. Furthermore, it overcomes aforementioned issues and does not require extra devices such as token device, card reader in smart card and scanner in physiological biometrics. The proposed scheme distinguishes to resist practical attacks, high-security level, anonymous password, mutual authentication, identity management, the cloud server and a user can establish authenticated session keys, reduces the cost, and good performance. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media.

It is still a challenging task to provide large scale video-on-demand (VoD) streaming services based on overlay network due to its inherent dynamicity and heterogeneity. Most of previous work has focused on how to construct a structured overlay to tackle this issue, i.e., tree-based overlay and DHT. However, they always suffer from inefficient resource utilization and poor reliability. In this paper, we propose a new solution based on unstructured overlay, called GridCast, in which a directional gossip protocol and a score-based partner selection algorithm are designed to explore multiple data suppliers for each joined peer. In this way, GridCast can make efficient use of the available upload bandwidth of peers to achieve better scalability and reliability. The experimental results from our early deployment show that it is feasible to provide scalable VoD services based on unstructured overlay. © 2007 IEEE.
