Cloud-based video encoding has become more and more popular in Internet, especially for mobile clients, considering their limited resources. Recently, GPUs (Graphics Processor Units) make the cloud-based video encoding more economic and efficient. However, the motion estimation in inter prediction, which usually occupies about 70% encoding time in H.264/AVC, is still a big headache because of its complexity. In this paper, a novel motion estimation algorithm is proposed, which is customized for GPU-based cloud encoding, considering motion tendency. A mean subsampling template is presented for a pre-search approach to get motion tendency, which can reduce computation cost obviously with less quality loss. To improve the efficiency of the CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) thread organization for motion estimation, a section-division method is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce nearly 22% computation time with less video quality loss, compared with the state-of-the-art work.

Today's smartphones are equipped with various embedded motion sensors, such as accelerometer, gyroscope, and orientation sensors. Perceptual applications perceive the environment of mobile users via sensors. However, malicious applications may use these sensors to steal user's privacy, and attackers can use sensors as side channel data to infer user's inputs. Existing solutions suffer from limited sensors and overhead problems. In this paper we present Perceptual Assistant (PA), a practical privacy protection system for all the sensors and untrusted perceptual applications. PA allows users to customize the sensor policy of third-party applications, and prevent malicious application from accessing sensors at runtime. We evaluate PA with several typical perceptual applications that perform diverse tasks. PA system shows both practical and lightweight: it can protect user's privacy efficiently while maintaining reasonable overhead.

With the increasing requirements of large-scale animation rendering, I/O congestion has become one of the main bottlenecks to constrain the whole performance seriously. What's worse, frequent rendering data access in remote storages brings a heavy burden of storage and delay of data access. Distributed Memory caching system for Rendering (RenDMS) is proposed to alleviate I/O congestion and improve data access performance. Rendering data is accessed from memories but not remote storages to reduce the overhead of data access and transmission. The concept of rendering unit is put forward to cluster rendering nodes, and MPI-based RPC, two-level data management, and dynamic adaptive placement are proposed to make rendering performance much better. Experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of RenDMS. Compared with direct remote disk access, parallel rendering with RenDMS can not only shorten data access time more than 40%, but also speedup the execution of rendering applications efficiently.

As multi-core platforms with hundreds or even more quantities of cores are popular, system optimization issues, including lock contentions, start to puzzle programmers who work on multi-core platforms. Locks are more convenient and clear than lock-free operations (for example, transactional memory) for multi-core programmers. However, lock contention has been recognized as a typical impediment to the performance of shared-memory parallel programs. This paper mainly discusses two important reasons that cause lock contention, including large critical sections and frequent lock requests. For current solutions, it is hard for programmers to find the locations of large critical sections and good scheme to reduce lock contentions on hot critical sections. This paper proposes FFlocker, a series of runtime solutions that reduce lock contention caused by the two issues. FFlocker includes a profiling algorithm to find the locations of large critical sections. Based on the profiling scheme, it binds the threads acquiring the same locks onto the same core. We evaluate our techniques with three benchmarks. The results show that FFlocker offers better performance than Function Flow and OpenMP.

With an increasing amount of electronic documents,screen-based reading becomes popular, how to improve the ability of reading deeply and sustaining aprolonged engagement in reading is one of challenges in a digital environment. In this paper, we describe a semantic analysis framework for proactively decreasing fragmented time while screen-based reading. The central idea is to utilize semantic analysis programs to extract an extensive set of information that describes keyword spotting. And the auxiliary knowledge can be used for deeply reading. We discuss the strengths of our semantic analysis programs, namely, text extraction, name recognition, feature matching and knowledge map analysis. We report our results of applying these programs to parse scientific literature, such as citation recognition, the author name recognition, reference extraction and etc. The experimental results show that proposed approach can greatly decrease the fragmented time while reading in the digital environment.

Testing plays an important role in software development cycle. Meanwhile, cloud computing has become one of the major trends in information technology. Built on top of virtualization technology, cloud computing systems can expand dynamically, contributed to the fact that the services deployed on clouds have remarkable differences with the traditional or distributed deployed ones. As a result, the state of art tools and methods used for dependability testing are not suitable for cloud computing systems. We design and implement a test bed, CloudTB, for testing the dependability of cloud computing systems. First, based on a highly efficient and extremely fast communication mechanism, CloudTB can guarantee a minimal time spent on dispatching the test commands. Second, CloudTB is able to target testing nodes in the dynamically expanding cloud computing systems with an accuracy of 100%, by taking advantages of SSH based authentication methods and HASH mapping mechanisms. Furthermore, CloudTB provides universal fault injection and stresses testing modules to test how the services and clouds perform when the environment and facilities are dynamically changing under massive requests. Finally, CloudTB is scalable enough to test thousands of nodes simultaneously and supports testing with test cases wrote by third parties. The evaluation results show that CloudTB is able to send more than 100 thousand and receive more than 40 thousand pieces of 1k-length message per second while testing million nodes simultaneously, with an accuracy of 100% for targeting. Thus we believe CloudTB is the perfect test bed with efficient, scalable, accurate, and viable support for testing the dependability of cloud computing systems.

With the prevalence of multicore processors in computer systems, many soft real-time applications, such as media-based ones, use parallel programming models to utilize hardware resources better and possibly shorten response time. Meanwhile, virtualization technology is widely used in cloud data centers. More and more cloud services including such parallel soft real-time applications are running in virtualized environment. However, current hyper visors do not provide adequate support for them because of soft real-time constraints and synchronization problems, which result in frequent deadline misses and serious performance degradation. CPU schedulers in underlying hyper visors are central to these issues. In this paper, we identify and analyze CPU scheduling problems in hyper visors, and propose a novel scheduling algorithm considering both soft real-time constraints and synchronization problems. In our proposed method, real-time priority is introduced to accelerate event processing of parallel soft real-time applications, and dynamic time slice is used to schedule virtual CPUs. Besides, all runnable virtual CPUs of virtual machines running parallel soft real-time applications are scheduled simultaneously to address synchronization problems. We implement a parallel soft real-time scheduler, named Poris, based on Xen. Our evaluation shows Poris can significantly improve the performance of parallel soft real-time applications. For example, compared to the Credit scheduler, Poris improves the performance of media player by up to a factor of 1.35, and shortens the execution time of PARSEC benchmark by up to 44.12%.

In order to meet the requirements of writing and reading data of rendering applications it need to provide a managed system of distributed data. In the existing management system such as HDFS, it provides a distributed file system of high fault tolerance and reliability for Hadoop. But it stores all the files in the disk and can not adapt to manage system of memory data. Memcache as the cache software of the web server is widely used because of its efficient speed of IO and sophisticated technologies of memory management. However the files stored in memcache are small files. Therefore it can't process big files well. Designed management system of memory data solves the problem of storage of big files efficiently by the use of shared memory pool. At the same time it also solves the problem of conflicts of data access by the use of double layer locked mechanism.

Performance bugs are difficult to diagnose in production cloud computing environments. Because the performance bugs often only appear under specific conditions are hard to be reproduced and provide little diagnostic information. In this paper, we propose PerfDoc, an automatic performance bugs online diagnosing tool. PerfDoc helps developers analyze software performance anomalies and identify the causes of performance anomalies. PerfDoc leverages system calls produced by the softwares to model the system call behavior of the software based on the self-organizing map, and identifies anomalous system calls with the behavior model by comparing the difference between the different execution units. PerfDoc does not require source code or any runtime instrumentation to the software. We have implemented a prototype of PerfDoc and tested it using real-world performance bugs on five popular open source server systems (Apache, Tomcat, Hadoop, HDFS, and MySQL). The results show that PerfDoc is able to locate the most suspicious system calls that are related to the performance bugs. Moreover, PerfDoc only imposes trivial runtime overhead (2.2%, averagely) on the tested softwares.

IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) has been accepted as the core control platform by 3GPP. It has been recognized as the vision beyond GSM for the Next Generation Network (NGN). The IMS framework delivers IP multimedia to mobile users through Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and supports heterogeneous networks access. In this paper, we propose a virtualization-based cloud platform for the IMS core network, with a novel load-balance and disaster recovery policy. Experimental results indicate that the proposed mechanism improves system performance by dynamic allocating resources according to current load. The proposed cloud infrastructure is able to recover from a disaster in seconds by using live migration of virtual machines.
