With the rapid development of virtualization technology as well as the good performance of computer hardware, virtual machine is beginning to gradually increase the performance of display to meet the needs of desktop users. However, there is a difference between the display mechanism in the virtual environment and the traditional environment. At present, more is focused on how to effectively and pertinently measure and assess the performance of display in virtualization environment. Taking consideration of the characteristics of display in the virtual environment, the virtual machine display performance evaluation system has following advantages: it can select a representative workload running on the VM in Domain U; make use of Tracing and Instrumentation to insert the record in the kernel of VM; log the relevant information; and then finally draw the performance-related parameters by the analysis of the recorder. This paper mainly depicts the underlying implementation details of the virtual display system in Xen and analyzes the display principle of Xen-based virtual machine. It also proposes a display latency performance model in Xen environment, which is named Vdismodel by verifying the reasonableness of the Vdismodel through a series of experiments and comparing the theoretical data and the measured data which are accessed by the virtual machine system performance evaluation.

With the popularity of virtualization, the problem that how to manage hundreds even thousands of virtual machines running on multiple physical computing nodes becomes important. Current virtual machine management systems only can obtain basic information of virtual machines and execute simple operations on them, such as start, reboot and shutdown. In this paper, we design a virtual machine management approach based on agent service. Agent service can provide detail running status information inside virtual machines. It also has been a bridge for host machines and virtual machines to interact with each other. Agent service is designed to automatically start when virtual machine boots up. By agent service we can get real-time information about virtual machines. We evaluate monitoring overhead and the performance of batch operations when using agent. The experimental results show that agent mechanism outperforms methods using Libvirt or VMware tools.

Grid is susceptible to a number of software and hardware failures, so a deep understanding of and modeling the grid resource failures are a challenge and have significant influence on grid researching. However, due to various reasons such as commercial secret and security, it is difficult to obtain real historical logs of grids. Therefore, an accurate model of resource failures is critically useful. In the paper, through analyzing the grid log data, we detail the suitability of three potential statistical distributions for each data set: Weibull, Zipf's law and Pareto. Then, this paper develops a grid resource failure simulator. Finally, with the different failure patterns generated by the failure simulator, the paper evaluates several common scheduling algorithms used in grid systems.

Warcraft III is one of the most popular Multiplayer Online Game (MOG) games, where users are designed to interact with support of a dedicated server. PKTown is a P2P-based third-party middleware developed to replace the dedicated servers. This paper presents the scalability and robustness of PKTown 2.0 architecture. The evaluation demonstrates the efficiency of the architecture.

Monitoring virtual machine (VM) is an essential function for virtualized platforms. Existing solutions are either coarse-grained - monitoring in granularity of VM level, or not general - only support specific monitoring functions for particular guest operating system (OS). Thus they do not satisfy the monitoring requirement in large-scale server cluster such as data center and public cloud platform, where each physical platform runs hundreds of VMs with different guest OSes. In this paper, we propose VMDriver, a general and fine-grained approach for virtualization monitoring. The novel design of VMDriver is the separation of event interception point in VMM level and rich guest OS semantic reconstructions in management domain. With this design, variant monitoring drivers in management domain can mask the differences of guest OSes. We implement VMDriver on Xen and our experimental study shows that it introduces very small performance overhead. We demonstrate its generality by inspecting four aspects information about the target virtual machines with different guest OSes. The unified interface of VMDriver brings convenience to develop complex monitoring tools for distributed virtualization environment.

Agent-based grid data loading method aims at integrating heterogeneous hospitals' information systems into a medical information exchange platform based on grid middleware. It collects distributed data sets for decision support system, which makes data sources expanded from independent database modes to medical information systems in wide area. Virtual data access with grid service improves data security and makes data modification in local system more flexible. HL7 protocol and middleware are utilized to transform HL7 data into various local data structures for keeping the independence of each hospital information system and providing more convenience and expansibility for various medical applications. © 2009 IEEE.

Live migration of virtual machines has been a powerful tool to facilitate system maintenance, load balancing, fault tolerance, and power-saving, especially in clusters or data centers. Although pre-copy is a predominantly used approach in the state of the art, it is difficult to provide quick migration with low network overhead, due to a great amount of transferred data during migration, leading to large performance degradation of virtual machine services. This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel memory-compressionbased VM migration approach (MECOM) that first uses memory compression to provide fast, stable virtual machine migration, while guaranteeing the virtual machine services to be slightly affected. Based on memory page characteristics, we design an adaptive zero-aware compression algorithm for balancing the performance and the cost of virtual machine migration. Pages are quickly compressed in batches on the source and exactly recovered on the target. Experiment demonstrates that compared with Xen, our system can significantly reduce 27.1% of downtime, 32% of total migration time and 68.8% of total transferred data on average. ©2009 IEEE.

The size of volumetric data generated by medical imaging and scientific simulations is increased significantly due to the dramatic advances in medical imaging modalities and computing technologies. The volumetric data generally need to be visualized and Marching Cubes algorithm (MC for short) is one of the standard methods of the isosurface extraction for the medical applications. However, MC algorithm requires a large amount of data computing power. The Cell Broadband Engine (Cell for short) processor, which is a typical COTS (commodity off-the-shelf) heterogeneous designed to handle extremely demanding computations, can be used to hasten isosurface extraction in medial application. In this paper, we present a streaming model-based scheme to efficiently map MC algorithm to Cell. Specifically, a blockbased filter running on PPE is imposed as a preprocessing stage to avoid unnecessary data transfer and computation, and the MC kernel runs on SPEs as the subsequent stage. Through tuning the size of the block, the workload of PPE and SPE is orchestrated harmoniously. The experimental results demonstrate that overall isosurface extraction speedup of more than 10 times is achieved compared with conventional heavy iron CPUs. © 2009 IEEE.

Live migration of virtual machines (VM) across distinct physical hosts provides a significant new benefit for administrators of data centers and clusters. Previous migration schemes focused on transferring the run-time memory state of the VM. Those approaches employed memory pre-copy algorithm to synchronize the migrating VM states, which make VM live migration cost much network traffic and application downtime, especially for memory-intensive workloads. This paper describes the design and implementation of a novel approach CR/TR-Motion that adopts checkpointing/recovery and trace/replay technology to provide fast, transparent VM migration. With execution trace logged on the source host, a synchronization algorithm is performed to orchestrate the running source and target VM until they get a consistent state. We also give a formalized characterization about the migration evaluation metrics and make a mathematical analysis about our algorithm. Our scheme can greatly reduce the migration downtime and network bandwidth consumption. Experimental measurements show that our approach can drastically reduce migration overheads compared with pre-copy algorithm: up to 72.4% on application observed downtime, up to 31.5% on total migration time and up to 95.9% on the data to synchronize the VM state, while the application performance overhead due to migration is less than 8.54% on average. We design and implement a Mandatory Access Control (MAC) system in distributed virtual computing environment, named DVM-MAC, aiming to provide distributed trust through enforcing MAC policies. In DVM-MAC, Prioritized Chinese Wall (PCW) model is implemented to control potential covert channels between VMs in both single node and distributed environment. A policy enforcement module locates inside Xen VMM for better enforcing MAC locally rather than outside the VMM. DVM-MAC adopts centralized architecture for multi-level management and secure transmission of internode policy information. For performance consideration, a specific policy decision and enforcement module for controlling inter-node behaviors is moved out of Xen VMM and up to user space. DVM-MAC authorizes a specific center node named Central Security Server (CSS) to be responsible for the decision making between the nodes as well as leaves the internode policy enforcement module in each node. Through our experiments and data analysis, we verify the correctness, effectiveness, and efficiency in our prototype when implementing PCW model. © 2009 IEEE.
