An Optimistic Checkpoint Mechanism Based on Job Characteristics and Resource Availability for Dynamic grids

In the paper, based on the job characteristics and resources availability, an optimistic checkpoint mechanism for dynamic grids（OCM4G） is proposed. It can determine whether to checkpoint a given job running on a given resource node and establish optimal aperiodic checkpoint intervals by applying the knowledge of job characteristics and resource availability. We evaluate OCM4G over a real grid environment （Chitlagrid） and the results show that OCM4G achieves better performance than the periodic checkpoint and the analytical method of calculating aperiodic checkpoint intervals.

Multi-instance learning (MIL) is a celebrated learning framework where each example is represented as a bag of instances. An example is negative if it has no positive instances, and vice versa if at least one positive instance is contained. During the past decades, various MIL algorithms have been proposed, among which the large margin based methods is a very popular class. Recently, the studies on margin theory disclose that the margin distribution is of more importance to generalization ability than the minimal margin. Inspired by this observation, we propose the multi-instance optimal margin distribution machine, which can identify the key instances via explicitly optimizing the margin distribution. We also extend a stochastic accelerated mirror prox method to solve the formulated minimax problem. Extensive experiments show the superiority of the proposed method. © 2020 Inst. Sci. inf., Univ. Knowledge representation learning is a key step required for link prediction tasks with knowledge graphs (KGs). During the learning process, the semantics of each entity are embedded by a vector or a point in a feature space. The distance between these points is a measure of semantic similarity. However, in a KG, while two entities may have similar semantics in some relations, they have different semantics in others. It is ambiguous to assign a fixed distance to depict the variant semantic similarity of entities. To alleviate the semantic ambiguity in KGs, we design a new embedding approach named OpticE, which is derived from the well-known physical phenomenon of optical interference. It is a lightweight and relation-adaptive model based on coherence theory, in which each entity’s semantics vary automatically regarding different relations. In addition, a unique negative sampling method is proposed to combine the multimapping properties and self-adversarial learning during the training process. The experimental results obtained on practical KG benchmarks show that the OpticE model, with elegant structures, can compete with existing link prediction methods. © 2022 Proceedings - International Conference on Computational Linguistics, COLING. Exploitation of covert channels in smartphone operating systems may lead to furtive data transmission between applications with different permissions, which might threaten users' privacy. Restricting the access to shared system resources can effectively prevent the exploitation of known covert channels. However, it inevitably limits the normal usage of those resources. In this paper, we propose a general method that detects covert channel attack at runtime without impacting the accessibility of shared resources in the system. The main idea of the method is to track and audit the use of system resources known as potential covert channel variables and impose interferences on those channels to reduce their capacity once violations are detected. We implement a prototype framework, which is able to audit and interfere covert communication both in the application layer and in the native layer of Android. The experimental results demonstrate that our method can effectively reduce the data rate of user-defined covert channels while the overhead is negligible. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The emergence of large-scale dynamic sets in real applications brings severe challenges in approximate set representation structures. A dynamic set with changing cardinality requires an elastic capacity of the approximate set representation structure, while traditional static structures, e.g., bloom filter, cuckoo filter, and their variants cannot satisfy the requirements. Existing dynamic approximate set representation structures only provide filter-level extensions, which require a single membership query to probe all discrete filters one by one. The large number of small discrete memory accesses takes up the vast majority of query time and results in unsatisfied query performance. To address the problem, in this work we propose the entry-extensible cuckoo filter (E2CF) to reduce memory access overhead for dynamic set representation and accelerate the membership query. E2CF utilizes adjacent buckets with continuous physical addresses in a cuckoo filter to extend bucket entries, which avoids many discrete memory accesses in a query. To further make E2CF space and time efficient, we adopt asynchronous extension and fine-grained splitting methods. Experiment results show that compared to state-of-the-art designs, E2CF reduces the query and insertion time by 82% and 28%, respectively. © 2021, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Multi-hop reasoning has been widely studied for its important application values in the domain of intelligent search and question answering. Real-world applications are often dominated by natural language input, and it is difficult to directly model the relation semantics in natural language to fit the multi-hop reasoning model. In addition, the extremely large scale and complex structure of knowledge graphs increase the challenge. We propose a natural language and knowledge graph fusion model (NLKGF) for multi-hop reasoning. NLKGF embeds knowledge graph by fusing natural language semantics during the graph propagation process and adds a relation attention mechanism to enable entity representations to perceive the contribution of different relations. A relation path encoder is designed to encode the relation path by an improved recurrent neural network, the reasoning entity is obtained by calculating the correlation score with the natural language. We tested the performance of the NLKGF model on two datasets requiring multi-hop reasoning. The experimental results show that NLKGF beats advanced benchmark models in multi-hop reasoning tasks, which proves superiority of our model. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Semantic reasoning techniques based on knowledge graphs have been widely studied since they were proposed. Previous studies are mostly based on closed-world assumptions, which cannot reason about unknown facts. To this end, we propose the Two-Stage Temporal Reasoning Model (TSTR) for reasoning about future facts. In the first stage, probability of future facts occurring is reasoned using repeated information in history. In the second stage, the semantics of the neighborhood nodes are aggregated using the structural encoder and the temporal information is captured using the temporal encoder. The predicted probabilities are obtained by the decoder. Finally, the candidate entity probabilities of the two-stage reasoning are weighted to achieve the prediction of the two-stage fusion. We tested the performance of the TSTR on public datasets and the results demonstrated the effectiveness of the TSTR. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Due to sparse of RDF data, RDF storage approaches using triple table or binary file rarely show high storage usage and high query performance. To achieve the goal of decreasing storage space and improving the efficiency and generality of query on RDF data, a memory-based storage optimization approach supporting SPARQL query is proposed in this paper. For storage efficiency, strings are transferred to 32-bit integer identifiers, RDFS/OWL is used to organize the RDF data storage model, vertical partition method and other ways are utilized to split and organize the RDF triples. For query generality, the storage model also partially supports SPARQL query. Furthermore, by getting the statistics of the underlying storage data, we construct a SPARQL query optimized module. Experiments show that our query optimization module greatly improves the performance of the SPARQL query. Compared with Jena Memory and RDF-3X, our storage method has higher performance. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

The huge amount of data enforces great pressure on the processing efficiency of database systems. By leveraging the in-situ computing ability of emerging nonvolatile memory, processing-in-memory (PIM) technology shows great potential in accelerating database operations against traditional architectures without data movement overheads. In this article, we introduce ReSQM, a novel ReCAM-based accelerator, which can dramatically reduce the response time of database systems. The key novelty of ReSQM is that some commonly used database queries that would be otherwise processed inefficiently in previous studies can be in-situ accomplished with massively high parallelism by exploiting the PIM-enabled ReCAM array. ReSQM supports some typical database queries (such as SELECTION, SORT, and JOIN) effectively based on the limited computational mode of the ReCAM array. ReSQM is also equipped with a series of hardware-algorithm co-designs to maximize efficiency. We present a new data mapping mechanism that allows enjoying in-situ in-memory computations for SELECTION operating upon intermediate results. We also develop a count-based ReCAM-specific algorithm to enable the in-memory sorting without any row swapping. The relational comparisons are integrated for accelerating inequality join by making a few modifications to the ReCAM cells with negligible hardware overhead. The experimental results show that ReSQM can improve the (energy) efficiency by $611\times $ ( $193\times $ ), $19\times $ ( $17\times $ ), $59\times $ ( $43\times $ ), and $307\times $ ( $181\times $ ) in comparison to a 10-core Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 processor for SELECTION, SORT, equi-join, and inequality join, respectively. In contrast to state-of-the-art CMOS-based CAM, GPU, FPGA, NDP, and PIM solutions, ReSQM can also offer $2.2\times 39\times $ speedups. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Commonsense knowledge (CSK) is the information that people use in daily life but do not often mention. It summarizes the practical knowledge about how the world works. Existing machines have knowledge but lack commonsense because they do not understand and master commonsense knowledge in the same way that humans do. In the latest works, crowdsourcing-based method is costly and has low coverage, knowledge base completion method can highly fit samples, and methods extracted from unstructured data have the defects of low quality. CG &BF is commonsense knowledge construction with a concept-based generator and a BERT-based filter. We utilize semantic search for node matching and entropy encoder for filtering triples with high abstraction. Two algorithms based on concept aggregation and path credibility are proposed to obtain high-quality CSK triples. We subsequently finetuning a BERT to filter incorrect triples. We obtain 500,000 CSK triples based on ConceptNet, which is superior to other construction methods in novelty and quality. In the reading comprehension task, the three-way attention network is selected as the basic model and the knowledge we generate enables the base model to perform better, which proves that the output of CG &BF has higher quality and ease of use. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
