Virtualization as a powerful and convenient technique has been widely used recently. Inserting the VMM between the hardware and operation system enables multiple virtual machines simultaneously running on hardware. However, these changes in system architecture, while improving the whole physical computing resources' utilization, also pay a certain price for virtualization. How to measure this part of CPU overhead, and how about the relationship between this part of CPU overhead and virtual machine number and the type of workload executing in virtual machine are two important questions to the further research of virtualization performance. In this paper we provide a system to measure the overhead of virtualization. With this system we could dynamically obtain the utilization of computing resource. Based on the analysis to the results of several experiments, we compare and study the relationship between the different factors and the overhead of virtualization. Finally, we predict the probably trend of the overhead under the impact of some factors.

Introducing the P2P (Peer-to-Peer) technology into SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) networks can improve VoIP (Voice on Internet Protocol) system's reliability and scalability, and reduce the operating costs. In order to provide better and more comprehensive services in VoIP system, it is necessary to communicate with the traditional telecommunications networks, including PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), by a voice gateway. The voice gateway system for P2P-based SIP VoIP builds the connection, and transforms signaling and media, between IP service network and PSTN. SIP-in-P2P is implemented in voice gateway system, using DHT (Distributed Hash Table) scheme to connect VGW (Voice Gateway) nodes in the P2P SIP network. Based on the GWMN (Gateway Management Node) protocol, the system can manage VGW nodes in the management domain, and designed the discovery strategies and load balancing strategies to improve the performance. Results indicate that the voice gateway system performs with good reliability, scalability, interoperability and feasibility.

With the development of computer science, desktop virtualization technology is more and more popular. In virtualized desktop, it is a very significant research to share periphery devices in the client-end computer seamlessly. We implement a device sharing mechanism to extend the universal serial bus in client-end host to the network for server-end host using transparently. This virtual device bus is deployed in the driver layer so that most applications and drivers in virtualized desktop could access remote shared devices through original interface. After deploying the virtual device bus driver, the duplicated virtual device could be accessed just like a real local device. In our implementation, the virtual device bus driver, which is the main module for virtualizing real USB devices and the interface for applications, is OS independent. Experiments show that the mechanism has a very friendly and easy interface to access virtual USB devices, and good performance.

The Delay Tolerant Network employs a store-carry-forward paradigm to enable bundle delivery in intermittent connected environments. A router relays a message only when a proper contact opportunity occurs, which results in prominent congestion issues. An appropriate scheduling and dropping policy can alleviate this situation and maximize contact capacity. We investigate the impact of delivery probability and number of message replicas over the efficiency of scheduling and dropping policies in probabilistic routing, and present a new way to utilize contact probability and delivery predictability to direct the design of scheduling policies. We also design a simple and distributed method to approximate the global number of replicas. We integrate these results and present a new scheduling and dropping policy. Simulation based on map based movement has shown that the new policy gains a delivery rate very close to global knowledge based policies, and it outperforms all other existing scheduling and dropping policies.

More and more enterprises are moving beyond server virtualization to desktop virtualization in recent years. In virtualization environments, centralized shared storage systems are generally used to take advantage of virtualization features such as VM migration. Network file system (NFS) is considered to be the best choice in small or medium sized LANs due to its flexibility and low cost. But it becomes the bottleneck when many clients access the server simultaneously, especially when multiple virtual machines access a large amount of data at the same time, such as operation save and restore. In this paper, we present a new method named ComIO to quickly save and restore virtual machines using page compression. Based on the analysis of virtual machines' memory characteristics, we design a fast enhanced characteristic-based compression (ECBC) algorithm. Combined with multi-threaded techniques, the compression tasks are parallelized for significantly shortened compresssion time. Page boundary alignment is proposed to enable wanted page data to be directly extracted from the compressed block. The experimental results demonstrate that compared with Xen, our method ComIO not only greatly reduces the time spent on saving and restoring virtual machines on average, but also indirectly augments the effective storage space.

Memory and I/O intensive applications always use a huge amount of memory and the performance decreases quickly when memory pressure arises. With the development of high performance network and widely used in cluster, the latency of remote memory access is much less than that of disk operation. In this paper, we present an approach to let the VM (Virtual Machine) use cluster-wide free memory, which can overcome the limitation of physical memory by exploiting low-latency access to the memory of other nodes in cluster. This approach can reduce the execution time for memory and I/O intensive applications significantly by utilizing cluster-wide memory and increase the whole cluster utilization.

Text-based image search engine and content-based image retrieval (CBIR) have achieved much progress in commerce and academic community. In addition, a few attempts have been conducted to integrate the two techniques for image retrieval in web context. However, it is very difficult for general search engine based on image context to return highly accurate results. Compound face image retrieval system, based on a novel vertical web image retrieval framework, is designed to make comprehensive uses of text, image content and some related technologies in face detection and recognition. It incorporates high-level semantics and low-level visual features of web image and provides more accurate results and good extensibility for further applications.

Inspired by the concept of cloud computing, the construction of HPC Cloud with traditional HPC resources not only provides new opportunities to address the challenges to the traditional HPC, but also brings many exciting research problems. One of them is how to reduce the network overhead of virtual cluster in HPC cloud. In order to resolve the problem, this paper presents the design and implementation of lightweight communication mechanism for virtual cluster in HPC Cloud, called LCM, which maintains binary compatibility for applications written in standard socket interface. We implemented our design on Xen 3.2 with Linux kernel 2.6.18, and evaluated the speed of file transfer, the running time of NAS Parallel benchmark and binary compatibility using binary image of real socket applications. In our tests, we have proved that LCM realizes the high performance that is comparable to UNIX domain socket and ensures full binary compatibility.

Virtualization can provide significant benefits in data centers, such as dynamic resource configuration, live virtual machine migration. services are deployed in virtual machines (VMs) and resource utilization can be greatly improved. In this paper, we present VScheduler, a system that dynamically adjusts processor resource configuration of virtual machines, including the amount of virtual resource and a new mapping of virtual machines and physical nodes. VScheduler implements a two-level resource configuration scheme -- local resource configuration (LRC) for an individual virtual machine and global resource configuration (GRC) for a whole cluster or data center. GRC especially takes variation tendency of workloads into account when remapping virtual machines to physical nodes. We implement our techniques in Xen and conduct a detailed evaluation using RUBiS and dbench. The experimental results show that VScheduler not only satisfies resource demands of services, but also reduces the number of virtual machines migration, which can provide a stable VM distribution on physical nodes in data centers.

Cloud computing enables users to perform their computation tasks in the public virtualized cloud using a pay-as-you-go style. Current pay-as-you-go pricing schemes typically charge on the incurred virtual machine hours. Our case studies demonstrate significant variations in the user costs, indicating significant unfairness among different users from the micro-economic perspective. Further studies reveal the reason for such variations is interference among concurrent virtual machines. The amount of interference cost depends on various factors, including workload characteristics, the number of concurrent VMs, and scheduling in the cloud. In this paper, we adopt the concept of pricing fairness from micro economics, and quantitatively analyze the impact of interference on the pricing fairness. To solve the unfairness caused by interference, we propose a pay-as-you-consume pricing scheme, which charges users according to their effective resource consumption excluding interference. The key idea behind the pay-as-you-consume pricing scheme is a machine learning based prediction model of the relative cost of interference. Our preliminary results with Xen demonstrate the accuracy of the prediction model, and the fairness of the pay-as-you-consume pricing scheme.
