Resource abstraction and data placement for distributed hybrid memory pool

Emerging byte-addressable non-volatile memory(NVM)technologies offer higher density and lower cost than DRAM,at the expense of lower performance and limited write *** have been many studies on hybrid NVM/DRAM memory management in a single physical ***,it is still an open problem on how to manage hybrid memories efficiently in a distributed *** paper proposes Alloy,a memory resource abstraction and data placement strategy for an RDMA-enabled distributed hybrid memory pool(DHMP).Alloy provides simple APIs for applications to utilize DRAM or NVM resource in the DHMP,without being aware of the hardware details of the *** propose a hotness-aware data placement scheme,which combines hot data migration,data replication and write merging together to improve application performance and reduce the cost of *** evaluate Alloy with several micro-benchmark workloads and public benchmark *** results show that Alloy can significantly reduce the DRAM usage in the DHMP by up to 95%,while reducing the total memory access time by up to 57%compared with the state-of-the-art approaches.

Hybrid memory systems composed of dynamic random access memory(DRAM)and Non-volatile memory(NVM)often exploit page migration technologies to fully take the advantages of different memory *** previous proposals usually migrate data at a granularity of 4 KB pages,and thus waste memory bandwidth and DRAM *** this paper,we propose Mocha,a non-hierarchical architecture that organizes DRAM and NVM in a flat address space physically,but manages them in a cache/memory *** the commercial NVM device-Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory Modules(DCPMM)actually access the physical media at a granularity of 256 bytes(an Optane block),we manage the DRAM cache at the 256-byte size to adapt to this feature of *** design not only enables fine-grained data migration and management for the DRAM cache,but also avoids write amplification for Intel Optane *** also create an Indirect Address Cache(IAC)in Hybrid Memory Controller(HMC)and propose a reverse address mapping table in the DRAM to speed up address translation and cache ***,we exploit a utility-based caching mechanism to filter cold blocks in the NVM,and further improve the efficiency of the DRAM *** implement Mocha in an architectural *** results show that Mocha can improve application performance by 8.2%on average(up to 24.6%),reduce 6.9%energy consumption and 25.9%data migration traffic on average,compared with a typical hybrid memory architecture-HSCC.

SAND: semi-automated adaptive network defense via programmable rule generation and deployment

Cyber security is dynamic as defenders often need to adapt their defense postures. The state-ofthe-art is that the adaptation of network defense is done manually(i.e., tedious and error-prone). The ideal solution is to automate adaptive network defense, which is however a difficult problem. As a first step towards automation, we propose investigating how to attain semi-automated adaptive network defense(SAND). We propose an approach extending the architecture of software-defined networking, which is centered on providing defenders with the capability to program the generation and deployment of dynamic defense rules enforced by network defense tools. We present the design and implementation of SAND, as well as the evaluation of the prototype implementation. Experimental results show that SAND can achieve agile and effective dynamic adaptations of defense rules(less than 15 ms on average for each operation), while only incurring a small performance overhead.

Evaluating RISC-V Vector Instruction Set Architecture Extension with Computer Vision Workloads

Computer vision(CV)algorithms have been extensively used for a myriad of applications *** the multimedia data are generally well-formatted and regular,it is beneficial to leverage the massive parallel processing power of the underlying platform to improve the performances of CV *** Instruction Multiple Data(SIMD)instructions,capable of conducting the same operation on multiple data items in a single instruction,are extensively employed to improve the efficiency of CV *** this paper,we evaluate the power and effectiveness of RISC-V vector extension(RV-V)on typical CV algorithms,such as Gray Scale,Mean Filter,and Edge *** our examinations,we show that compared with the baseline OpenCV implementation using scalar instructions,the equivalent implementations using the RV-V(version 0.8)can reduce the instruction count of the same CV algorithm up to 24x,when processing the same input ***,the actual performances improvement measured by the cycle counts is highly related with the specific implementation of the underlying RV-V *** our evaluation,by using the vector co-processor(with eight execution lanes)of Xuantie C906,vector-version CV algorithms averagely exhibit up to 2.98x performances speedups compared with their scalar counterparts.

P2P technology has been widely adopted in live streaming system for its scalability and low commercial cost. However, tree based system or mesh based system still has to face the constraint or tradeoff caused by its solo shaped overlay construction. To address this problem, this paper introduces a tree-mesh based hybrid overlay and an optimized scheduling method. These works have been proven efficient in terms of low control overhead and better streaming experience compared with other systems. All algorithms and methods have been implemented in Anysee2. © 2007 IEEE.

Nowadays, more and more large scale knowledge bases are available for public access. Although these knowledge bases have their inherent access interfaces, such as SPARQL, they are generally unfriendly to end users. An intuitive way to bridge the gap between users and knowledge bases is to enable users to ask questions with natural language interface and return desired answers directly. Here the challenge is how to discover the query intention of users. Another challenge is how to obtain accurate answers from knowledge bases. In this paper, we model the query intention with a graph based on an entity-driven method. Consequently, the core problem of natural language question answering can be treated as subgraph matching over knowledge bases. For a query graph, there is a huge number of candidate mappings in a knowledge base, including ambiguities. Thus, a semantic vector is proposed to address disambiguation by evaluating the semantic similarity between edges in a query graph and paths in a knowledge base. By this way, our system can extract accurate answers directly without any offline work. Extensive experiments over the series of QALD challenges show the effectiveness of our system Svega in terms of recall and precision against other state-of-The-Art systems. © 2018 Universitat zu Koln. Recently much attention has been paid to semantic overlay networks for information retrieval in large scale peer-to-peer networks,and much research work on semantic overlay protocols and searching algorithms has been done and the results indicate that semantic overlay is efficient for content searching in peer-to-peer ***,very limited work has been done to analyze and evaluate the characteristics of semantic overlay *** this paper we identify a natural property of semantic overlay networks,the community *** propose a mathematical model to evaluate the property of community structure of semantic P2P overlay networks.A heuristic algorithm is designed to optimize the community *** the evaluation model we compare the SemreX semantic overlay with the Gnutella *** demonstrate that a SemreX overlay network has the distinctive community structure feature,while a Gnutella-like network does *** also simulate a simple flooding protocol in both overlays to show that the overlay with community structure is more efficient for content searching.

Uniform information service interoperation framework among heterogeneous grids

Currently there is no practical standard for grid middleware, most of the grid platforms are built by their own, and it's not easy to interoperate these grid platforms. Information service is one of the key components of the service oriented grid system, and information service interoperation among heterogeneous grids is the first step towards grid interoperation. Existing grid interoperability projects mainly focus on immediate bridge mechanisms, which is intricate and of poor scalability. To address the issues, a uniform information service interoperation framework (UISIF) is proposed in the paper, which is based on the idea of mediated bridge mechanisms, and adopts virtual layer and plug-in technology. There are two wellestablished grid systems in China, Chinagrid and China National grid, and they are built with two different grid middleware, CGSP and VEGA. With UISIF, these two grid systems make information service interoperation a reality without changing the codes of current grid systems. The experiments also show that the information service interoperation has low information querying latency and high accuracy;Moreover, UISIF has good scalability based on hierarchical architecture, virtual layer and plug-in technology. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

ARCHER:a ReRAM-based accelerator for compressed recommendation systems

Modern recommendation systems are widely used in modern data *** random and sparse embedding lookup operations are the main performance bottleneck for processing recommendation systems on traditional platforms as they induce abundant data movements between computing units and ***-based processing-in-memory(PIM)can resolve this problem by processing embedding vectors where they are ***,the embedding table can easily exceed the capacity limit of a monolithic ReRAM-based PIM chip,which induces off-chip accesses that may offset the PIM ***,we deploy the decomposed model on-chip and leverage the high computing efficiency of ReRAM to compensate for the decompression performance *** this paper,we propose ARCHER,a ReRAM-based PIM architecture that implements fully yon-chip recommendations under resource ***,we make a full analysis of the computation pattern and access pattern on the decomposed *** on the computation pattern,we unify the operations of each layer of the decomposed model in multiply-and-accumulate *** on the access observation,we propose a hierarchical mapping schema and a specialized hardware design to maximize resource *** the unified computation and mapping strategy,we can coordinatethe inter-processing elements *** evaluation shows that ARCHER outperforms the state-of-the-art GPU-based DLRM system,the state-of-the-art near-memory processing recommendation system RecNMP,and the ReRAM-based recommendation accelerator REREC by 15.79×,2.21×,and 1.21× in terms of performance and 56.06×,6.45×,and 1.71× in terms of energy savings,respectively.
