Recent advance of virtualization technology provides a new approach to check-point/restart at the virtual machine(VM) *** contrast to traditional process-level checkpointing,checkpointing at the virtualization layer brings up several advantages,such as compatibility,transparence,flexibility and ***,because the virtualization layer has little semantic knowledge about the operation system and the applications running atop,VM-layer checkpointing requires saving the entire operating system state rather than a single *** overhead may render the approach *** reduce the size of VM checkpoint,in this paper we propose a page eviction scheme and an incremental checkpointing mechanism to avoid saving unnecessary VM pages in the *** keep the system online transparently,we propose a live checkpointing mechanism by saving the memory image in a copy-on-write(COW) *** implement the performance optimization mechanisms in a prototype system,called *** results with a group of representative applications show that our page eviction scheme and incremental checkpointing can significantly reduce the checkpoint file size by up to 87% and shorten the total checkpointing/restart time by a factor of up to 71%,in comparison with the Xens default checkpointing *** observed application downtimes due to checkpointing can be reduced to as small as 300 ms.

The simulation grid has become a very important research topic. In order to ensure the QoS of resource management, we present a control mechanism in simulation grid, which is based on the prediction methods. In the control mechanism, we first introduce our resource management module in simulation grid. Then, we propose a resource allocation algorithm. In order to justify the feasibility and the availab.lity of this control mechanism, a series of experiments have been done. The results show that it is feasible to schedule the system resources and control the QoS of system resources for tasks in simulation grid. © 2012 IEEE.

Transactional memory (TM) is a parallel programming concept which reduces challenges in parallel programming. Existing distributed transactional memory system consumes too much bandwidth and brings high latency. In this work, we present Transactional Memory system for cluster (Clustm), a generalized and scalab.e distributed transactional memory system. Our system addresses several open issues posed by this domain, including transactional memory consistency protocol, cache consistency protocol, and the distribution strategy of the metadata of shared data across the cluster. Then, we evaluate our design with several workloads, and the results demonstrate outstanding performance. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we address the problem of allocating disk resources to guarantee specified latency and throughput targets of VMs while keeping efficient disk I/O. Accordingly, we present two-level scheduling framework, namely Flubber, in Xen-based hosting platform that decouples latency and throughput allocation. The high-level throughput control regulates the pending requests from the VMs, in order to meet the throughput requirements of different VMs and ensure isolation. Meanwhile, the low-level latency control, by the virtue of the batch and delay EDF mechanism, reorders all pending requests from VMs based on the their deadlines, and batches them to the disk device considering the locality of accesses across VMs. We have implemented Flubber with intensive evaluations on Xen-based host. The results show that Flubber can simultaneously meet the different service requirements of VMs while improving the efficiency of the physical disk. In contrast to CFQ, besides that Flubber achieves the desired QoS of each VM, Flubber speeds up the sequential and random read by 17% and 25% due to the efficient physical disk utilization. © 2012 IEEE.

Map/Reduce style data-parallel computation is characterized by the extensive use of user-defined functions for data processing and relies on data-shuffling stages to prepare data partitions for parallel computation. Instead of treating user-defined functions as "black boxes", we propose to analyze those functions to turn them into "gray boxes" that expose opportunities to optimize data shuffling. We identify useful functional properties for userdefined functions, and propose SUDO, an optimization framework that reasons about data-partition properties, functional properties, and data shuffling. We have assessed this optimization opportunity on over 10,000 dataparallel programs used in production SCOPE clusters, and designed a framework that is incorporated it into the production system. Experiments with real SCOPE programs on real production data have shown that this optimization can save up to 47% in terms of disk and network I/O for shuffling, and up to 48% in terms of cross-pod network traffic. © 2012 by The USENIX Association. For the big data, the fingerprints of the data chunks are very huge and cannot be stored in the memory completely. Accordingly, a new query mechanism namely Two-stage Bloom Filter mechanism is proposed. First, each bit of the second grade bloom filter represents the chunks having the identical fingerprints which reducing the rate of false positives. Second, a two-dimensional list is created corresponding to the two grade bloom filter to gather the absolute addresses of the data chunks with the identical fingerprints. Finally, we suggest a new hash function class with the strong global random characteristic. Two-stage Bloom Filter decreases the number of accessing disks, improves the speed of detecting the redundant data chunks, and reduces the rate of false positive. Our experiments indicate that Two-stage Bloom Filter reduces about 30~40% storage accessing of false positive with the same length of the first grade Bloom Filter. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

When operating in volatile environments, service-based systems (SBSs) that are built through dynamic composition of component services must be monitored in order to guarantee the response times of the SBSs. In particular, the critical path of a composite SBS, i.e., the execution path in the service composition with the maximum execution time, should be prioritised in cost-effective monitoring as it determines the response time of the SBS. In volatile operating environments, the critical path of a SBS is probabilistic. As such, it is important to estimate the criticalities of the execution paths and the component services, i.e., the probabilities that they are critical, to decide which parts of the system to monitor. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to the identification of Probabilistic Critical Path for Service-based systems (PCP-SBS). PCP-SBS takes into account the probabilistic nature of the critical path and calculates path criticalities in the context of service composition. We evaluate PCP-SBS experimentally using SBSs that are synthetically composed based on a real-world Web service dataset. © 2012 IEEE.

MapReduce has emerged as a leading programming model for data-intensive computing. Many recent research efforts have focused on improving the performance of the distributed frameworks supporting this model. Many optimizations are network-oriented and most of them mainly address the data shuffling stage of MapReduce. Our studies with Hadoop demonstrate that, apart from the shuffling phase, another source of excessive network traffic is the high number of map task executions which process remote data. That leads to an excessive number of useless speculative executions of map tasks and to an unbalanced execution of map tasks across different machines. All these factors produce a noticeable performance degradation. We propose a novel scheduling algorithm for map tasks, named Maestro, to improve the overall performance of the MapReduce computation. Maestro schedules the map tasks in two waves: first, it fills the empty slots of each data node based on the number of hosted map tasks and on the replication scheme for their input data, second, runtime scheduling takes into account the probability of scheduling a map task on a given machine depending on the replicas of the task's input data. These two waves lead to a higher locality in the execution of map tasks and to a more balanced intermediate data distribution for the shuffling phase. In our experiments on a 100-node cluster, Maestro achieves around 95% local map executions, reduces speculative map tasks by 80% and results in an improvement of up to 34% in the execution time. © 2012 IEEE.

Virtualization can provide significant benefits in data centers, such as dynamic resource configuration, live virtual machine migration. services are deployed in virtual machines (VMs) and resource utilization can be greatly improved. In this paper, we present VScheduler, a system that dynamically adjusts processor resource configuration of virtual machines, including the amount of virtual resource and a new mapping of virtual machines and physical nodes. VScheduler implements a two-level resource configuration scheme - local resource configuration (LRC) for an individual virtual machine and global resource configuration (GRC) for a whole cluster or data center. GRC especially takes variation tendency of workloads into account when remapping virtual machines to physical nodes. We implement our techniques in Xen and conduct a detailed evaluation using RUBiS and dbench. The experimental results show that VScheduler not only satisfies resource demands of services, but also reduces the number of virtual machines migration, which can provide a stable VM distribution on physical nodes in data centers. © 2011 IEEE.

Due to sparse of RDF data, RDF storage approaches using triple table or binary file rarely show high storage usage and high query performance. To achieve the goal of decreasing storage space and improving the efficiency and generality of query on RDF data, a memory-based storage optimization approach supporting SPARQL query is proposed in this paper. For storage efficiency, strings are transferred to 32-bit integer identifiers, RDFS/OWL is used to organize the RDF data storage model, vertical partition method and other ways are utilized to split and organize the RDF triples. For query generality, the storage model also partially supports SPARQL query. Furthermore, by getting the statistics of the underlying storage data, we construct a SPARQL query optimized module. Experiments show that our query optimization module greatly improves the performance of the SPARQL query. Compared with Jena Memory and RDF-3X, our storage method has higher performance. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
