HMvisor: dynamic hybrid memory management for virtual machines

Emerging non-volatile memory(NVM) technologies promise high density, low cost and dynamic random access memory(DRAM)-like performance, at the expense of limited write endurance and high write energy consumption. It is more practical to use NVM combining with the traditional DRAM. However, the hybrid memory management such as page migration becomes more challenging in a virtualization environment because virtual machines(VMs) are unaware of the memory heterogeneity. In this paper, we propose HMvisor, a hypervisor and VM coordinated hybrid memory management mechanism to better utilize DRAM and NVM resources. HMvisor exposes the memory heterogeneity to VMs by mapping virtual NUMA nodes to different physical NUMA nodes. We propose a lightweight and efficient page migration mechanism by decoupling page hotness tracking from page migration. HMvisor performs those operations in the hypervisor and VMs separately, without disrupting the execution of VMs. We also propose a memory resource trading policy to adjust the capacity of DRAM and NVM for each VM, with the monetary cost unchanged. We implement our prototype system based on QEMU/KVM and evaluate it with several benchmarks. Experimental results show that HMvisor can reduce 50% of write traffic to NVM with less than 5% performance overhead. Moreover, the hybrid memory adjustment scheme in HMvisor can significantly improve application performance by up to 30×.

Since the advent of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, blockchain, as their underlying technologies,has drawn a massive amount of attention from both academia and the industry. This ever-evolving technology inherits the “genes” of distributed systems, offering significant advantages of immutability, transparency,auditability, and tamper-resistance. These benefits help blockchain re-establish public confidence, and hold the significant promise of reliable information sharing and value transfer. Therefore, blockchain has become the foundation of crucial strategic deployments in countries across the world, and the fundamental basis for building the next generation Web 3.0 — “Internet of value”. In this article, we will start with unraveling the essential ingredients of blockchain technology, and showing the characteristics of each of these ingredients in the context of distributed systems. We will then present the core technical challenges that need to be addressed prior to unleashing its full potential, including its performance, scalab.lity, and cross-chain interoperability. Finally, we will introduce the recent developments of blockchain systems, and discuss the future trends of the blockchain ecosystem.

FunctionFlow:coordinating parallel tasks

With the growing allel programming,nowadays popularity of task-based partask-parallel programming libraries and languages are still with limited support for coordinating parallel *** limitation forces programmers to use additional independent components to coordinate the parallel tasks -the components can be third-party libraries or additional components in the same programming library or ***,mixing tasks and coordination components increase the difficulty of task-based programming,and blind schedulers for understanding tasks'dependencies. In this paper,we propose a task-based parallel programming library,Function Flow,which coordinates tasks in the purpose of avoiding additional independent coordination ***,we use dependency expression to represent ubiquitous tasks'*** key idea behind dependency expression is to use && for both task's termination and Ⅱ for any task termination,along with the combination of dependency ***,as runtime support,we use a lightweight representation for dependency expression. Also,we use suspended-task queue to schedule tasks that still have prerequisites to run. Finally,we demonstrate Function Flow's effectiveness in two aspects,case study about implementing popular parallel patterns with FunctionFIow,and performance comparision with state-of-the-art practice,*** demonstration shows that FunctionFIow can generally coordinate parallel tasks without involving additional components,along with comparable performance with TBB.

Saudi cloud infrastructure: a security analysis

The growing demand and dependence upon cloud services have garnered an increasing level of threat to user data and security. Some of such critical web and cloud platforms have become constant targets for persistent malicious attacks that attempt to breach security protocol and access user data and information in an unauthorized manner. While some of such security compromises may result from insider data and access leaks, a substantial proportion continues to remain attributed to security flaws that may exist within the core web technologies with which such critical infrastructure and services are developed. This paper explores the direct impact and significance of security in the Software Development Life Cycle(SDLC) through a case study that covers some 70 public domain web and cloud platforms within Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the major sources of security vulnerabilities within the target platforms as well as the major factors that drive and influence them are presented and discussed through experimental evaluation. The paper reports some of the core sources of security flaws within such critical infrastructure by implementation with automated security auditing and manual static code analysis. The work also proposes some effective approaches, both automated and manual, through which security can be ensured through-out the SDLC and safeguard user data integrity within the cloud.

Text-augmented long-term relation dependency learning for knowledge graph representation

Knowledge graph (KG) representation learning aims to map entities and relations into a low-dimensional representation space, showing significant potential in many tasks. Existing approaches follow two categories: (1) Graph-based approaches encode KG elements into vectors using structural score functions. (2) Text-based approaches embed text descriptions of entities and relations via pre-trained language models (PLMs), further fine-tuned with triples. We argue that graph-based approaches struggle with sparse data, while text-based approaches face challenges with complex relations. To address these limitations, we propose a unified Text-Augmented Attention-based Recurrent Network, bridging the gap between graph and natural language. Specifically, we employ a graph attention network based on local influence weights to model local structural information and utilize a PLM based prompt learning to learn textual information, enhanced by a mask-reconstruction strategy based on global influence weights and textual contrastive learning for improved robustness and generalizability. Besides, to effectively model multi-hop relations, we propose a novel semantic-depth guided path extraction algorithm and integrate cross-attention layers into recurrent neural networks to facilitate learning the long-term relation dependency and offer an adaptive attention mechanism for varied-length information. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model exhibits superiority over existing models across KG completion and question-answering tasks.

RTRM: A response time-based replica management strategy for cloud storage system

Replica management has become a hot research topic in storage systems. This paper presents a dynamic replica management strategy based on response time, named RTRM. RTRM strategy consists of replica creation, replica selection, and replica placement mechanisms. RTRM sets a threshold for response time, if the response time is longer than the threshold, RTRM will increase the number of replicas and create new replica. When a new request comes, RTRM will predict the bandwidth among the replica servers, and make the replica selection accordingly. The replica placement refers to search new replica placement location, and it is a NP-hard problem. Based on graph theory, this paper proposes a reduction algorithm to solve this problem. The simulation results show that RTRM strategy performs better than the five built-in replica management strategies in terms of network utilization and service response time. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Container-based virtualization isbecoming increasingly popular in cloud computing due to its efficiency and *** isolation is a fundamental property of *** works have indicated weak resource isolation could cause significant performance degradation for containerized applications and enhanced resource ***,current studies have almost not discussed the isolation problems of page cache which is a key resource for *** leverage memory cgroup to control page cache ***,existing policy introduces two major problems in a container-based ***,containers can utilize more memory than limited by their cgroup,effectively breaking memory ***,the Os kernel has to evict page cache to make space for newly-arrived memory requests,slowing down containerized *** paper performs an empirical study of these problems and demonstrates the performance impacts on containerized *** we propose pCache(precise control of page cache)to address the problems by dividing page cache into private and shared and controlling both kinds of page cache separately and *** do so,pCache leverages two new technologies:fair account(f-account)and evict on demand(EoD).F-account splits the shared page cache charging based on per-container share to prevent containers from using memory for free,enhancing memory *** EoD reduces unnecessary page cache evictions to avoid the performance *** evaluation results demonstrate that our system can effectively enhance memory isolation for containers and achieve substantial performance improvement over the original page cache management policy.

DDASTM: Ensuring conflict serializability efficiently in distributed STM

CS (Conflict Serializability) is a recently proposed relaxer correctness criterion that can increase transactional memory's parallelism. DDA (Distributed Dependency-Aware) model is currently proposed to implement CS in distributed STM (Software Transactional Memory) for the first time. However, its transactions detect conflicts individually via detecting cycles in PG (Precedence Graph) and cause extra runtime overhead, especially at the condition that the transactions access lots of objects or the PG is large. In this paper, we propose an approach to make each cycle in PG detected by those transactions, which construct this cycle, together in parallel way, instead of detecting cycle individually. Experimental results show that the average execution time and communication cost of all transactions, including aborted ones, in our approach, can be decreased to 76% and 78% of those in DDA respectively. Its speedup is up to 2.56x against baseDSTM, employing two-phase locking. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Agent-based grid data loading method aims at integrating heterogeneous hospitals' information systems into a medical information exchange platform based on grid middleware. It collects distributed data sets for decision support system, which makes data sources expanded from independent database modes to medical information systems in wide area. Virtual data access with grid service improves data security and makes data modification in local system more flexible. HL7 protocol and middleware are utilized to transform HL7 data into various local data structures for keeping the independence of each hospital information system and providing more convenience and expansibility for various medical applications. © 2009 IEEE.
