Targeted immunization has been studied as an applicable measure for network epidemics. Unless global information is collected, existing targeted strategies are short of strength in organizing a potent structure to spread the vaccines fleetly. We propose a novel dynamic immunization mechanism, called OnRipple, to propagate vaccines in susceptible-infected-removed (SIR) epidemiological model. With a light-weighted, scalable and distributed framework and an "axis" structure, OnRipple builds-up an effective overlay network. Thus, nodes have essential sampling information of the whole network and targeted immunization can be easily implemented. Nodes are also able to radiate vaccines to both nearby and distant participants almost at the same time. We analyze the performance of this strategy by simulations on small-world networks. On average, OnRipple is 34 % faster than traditional targeted immunization. It is proven to be flexible and effective in large-scale peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and scale-free networks.

Elastic scaling in response to changes on demand is a main benefit of serverless computing. When bursty workloads arrive, a serverless platform launches many new containers and initializes function environments (known as cold starts), which incurs significant startup latency. To reduce cold starts, platforms usually pause a container after it serves a request, and reuse this container for subsequent requests. However, this reuse strategy cannot efficiently reduce cold starts because the schedulers are agnostic of container lifecycle. For example, it may ignore soon available containers or evict soon needed containers. We propose a container lifecycle-aware scheduling strategy for serverless computing, CAS. The key idea is to control distribution of requests and determine creation or eviction of containers according to different lifecycle phases of containers. We implement a prototype of CAS on OpenWhisk. Our evaluation shows that CAS reduces 81% cold starts and therefore brings a 63% reduction at 95th percentile latency compared with native scheduling strategy in OpenWhisk when there is worker contention between workloads, and does not add significant performance overhead. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Among the plethora of IoT(Internet of Things)applications,the smart home is one of the ***,the rapid development of the smart home has also made smart home systems a target for ***,researchers have made many efforts to investigate and enhance the security of smart home *** a more secure smart home ecosystem,we present a detailed literature review on the security of smart home ***,we categorize smart home systems’security issues into the platform,device,and communication *** exploring the research and specific issues in each of these security areas,we summarize the root causes of the security flaws in today's smart home systems,which include the heterogeneity of internal components of the systems,vendors'customization,the lack of clear responsibility boundaries and the absence of standard security ***,to better understand the security of smart home systems and potentially provide better protection for smart home systems,we propose research directions,including automated vulnerability mining,vigorous security checking,and data-driven security analysis.

Multi-version graph processing has been widely used to solve many real-world problems. The process of the multi-version graph processing typically includes: (1) a history graph version switching at a specific time and (2) graph processing on this history graph. Existing multi-version graph systems assume ideally that every request for a particular graph version at a particular time will have a corresponding snapshot available. However, in most cases, this is not true. Then existing solutions usually have to settle with an "approximating"version as a substitute, leading to unexpected results for the underlying graph algorithm and thus reducing the practicality of a multi-version graph system for many application scenarios *** this paper, we observe that only a few graph updates have a great impact on the final results. We therefore present AFaVS, a novel multi-version graph system that can improve accuracy effectively in both time- and memory-efficient manners. The cornerstone of AFaVS lies in a novel concept "value"that characterizes the importance of graph updates. AFaVS proposes differential management of updates based on their values and achieves higher accuracy while preserving processing and memory efficiency. AFaVS is also equipped with value-guided version switching and locality-aware optimizations to boost its overall efficiency. Our results on a variety of real-world datasets show that AFaVS outperforms four state-of-the-art multi-version graph systems by 74.35%~95.72% in terms of accuracy improvement and 57.03%~90.44% in terms of memory reduction while introducing less than 2.96% extra computing time. We have deployed AFaVS in a disaster recovery system on the production cluster of Alibaba, achieving 78.8%~90.1% fewer error rates than advanced systems at a comparable efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.

The programming is still a challenging issue for the high performance distributed computing (HPDC) platform, and it is critical to the popularity of peer-to-peer (P2P) based HPDC systems. Therefore, this paper focuses on the design and implementation of OMP, a one-sided message passing programming model for unstructured P2P computing system, P2HP. Based on taskspsila execution flow, P2HP provides a one-sided point-to-point message-passing communication library, and a software development kit with rich APIs for applicationspsila parallelization. Furthermore, a serial sequence alignment algorithm is parallelized with OMP in P2HP. The evaluation shows that OMP makes P2HP practical and efficient.

Docker has been widely adopted in production environment, but unfortunately deployment and cold-start of container are limited by the low speed of disk. The emerging non-volatile memory (NVM) technology, which has high speed and can store data permanently, brings a new chance to accelerate the deployment and cold-start of container. However, it is expensive to replace the whole hard disk driver (HDD) with NVM. To achieve the fastest deployment and cold-start with lowest cost, we conduct in-depth analysis on the Top-134 images in Docker Hub and obtain two main insights as: (1) the storing latency of layered image has become the bottleneck of container deployment;(2) only a few image layers are required for container cold-start. Based on these two findings, we propose a NVM-HDD hybrid docker storage framework as N-Docker. It can effectively accelerate container cold-start by detecting the bottleneck layers as well as cold-start required layers and storing them into NVM for faster container startup with limited NVM capacity. Experimental results show that N-Docker can accelerate the container deployment by 1.21X and cold-start by 2.96X. Compared to NVM-Docker, which stores all images into NVM, N-Docker achieves the same performance improvements while reducing the usage of NVM by 88.22%. © 2019, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Cloud-based machine learning services offer significant advantages but also introduce the risk of tampering with cloud-deployed deep neural network (DNN) models. Black-box integrity verification (BIV) allows model owners and end-users to determine if a cloud-deployed DNN model has been tampered with by examining only the top-1 label responses. Fingerprinting generates fingerprint samples to query the model, achieving BIV with no impact on the model's accuracy. In this paper, we present BIVBench, the first comprehensive benchmark for BIV of DNN models. BIVBench covers 16 types of model modifications, providing extensive coverage of practical modification scenarios. Our analysis reveals that existing fingerprinting methods, which are typically focused on significant tampering, lack the sensitivity needed to effectively detect subtle yet common and potentially severe modifications. To address this limitation, we propose MiSentry (Model Integrity Sentry), a novel fingerprinting method that leverages meta-learning. MiSentry strategically incorporates a few subtly modified models into the meta-learning model zoo and maximizes the divergence of output predictions between the target model and the modified models in the model zoo to generate highly sensitive, generalizable, and effective fingerprint samples. Extensive evaluations using BIVBench demonstrate that MiSentry outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods overall and significantly surpasses them in detecting subtle modifications. Hadoop/MapReduce has emerged as a de facto programming framework to explore cloud-computing resources. Hadoop has many configuration parameters, some of which are crucial to the performance of MapReduce jobs. In practice, these parameters are usually set to default or inappropriate values. This severely limits system performance (e.g., execution time). Therefore, it is essential but also challenging to investigate how to automatically tune these parameters to optimize MapReduce job performance. In this paper, we propose an automatic MapReduce configuration optimization framework named as MR-COF. By monitoring and analyzing the runtime behavior, the framework adopts a cost-based performance prediction model that predicts the MapReduce job performance. In addition, we design a genetic search algorithm which iteratively tunes parameters in order to find out the best one. Testbed-based experimental results show that the average MapReduce job performance is increased by 35% with MR-COF compared to the default configuration. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

P2P technology has been widely adopted in live streaming system for its scalability and low commercial cost. However, tree based system or mesh based system still has to face the constraint or tradeoff caused by its solo shaped overlay construction. To address this problem, this paper introduces a tree-mesh based hybrid overlay and an optimized scheduling method. These works have been proven efficient in terms of low control overhead and better streaming experience compared with other systems. All algorithms and methods have been implemented in Anysee 2.

Modern GPUs have been widely used to accelerate the graph processing for complicated computational problems regarding graph theory. Many parallel graph algorithms adopt the asynchronous computing model to accelerate the iterative convergence. Unfortunately, the consistent asynchronous computing requires locking or the atomic operations, leading to significant penalties/overheads when implemented on GPUs. To this end, coloring algorithm is adopted to separate the vertices with potential updating conflicts, guaranteeing the consistency/correctness of the parallel processing. We propose a light-weight asynchronous processing framework called Frog with a hybrid coloring model. We find that majority of vertices (about 80%) are colored with only a few colors, such that they can be read and updated in a very high degree of parallelism without violating the sequential consistency. Accordingly, our solution will separate the processing of the vertices based on the distribution of colors.
