Virtual machine (VM) based logging-and-replay technology has attracted much attention for system security, fault tolerance, and debugging. However, so far there is not a replay system designed on virtual machine monitor Xen. In this paper, XenLR presents the design and implementation of a logging tool for full system replay on Xen. To reduce the design complexity, XenLR is achieved on a lightweight VM mini OS. Our preliminary work dedicates to identify architectural non-deterministic events and record them compactly. XenLR does not modify the guest OS and only need to record the external inputs (keyboard input and time update on mini OS). The log data are saved in the privileged domain¿s file system through transmission channels. The experiments indicate that XenLR results in low time and space overhead. Overhead due to logging is imperceptible for interactive use. The log files grow at 1.4 MByte/day, so it causes litter space consumption for today¿s large capacity disk storage.

Virtual desktop environment (VDE) provides a real virtual working environment in which users could personally customize and update the application list from application template libraries. The heterogeneous applications actually running in the remote application servers could cooperatively communicate with each other. It is a thin client approach to mobility in which the perfect combination of VM technology and DFS technology are the keys to the rapid seamless resuming of the usage scenarios. Usage scenarios are incrementally suspended including the user's documents and the running applications. The usage data stored in data center provides a unified view for the users through historical scenario manager and ensures the data's security and reliability at the same time. This paper explores the building policy of a real virtual working environment and the suspending/resuming policy of usage scenarios. Experiments demonstrate and evaluate VDE's efficiency and effectiveness.

Virtualization as a powerful and convenient technique has been widely used recently. Inserting the VMM between the hardware and operation system enables multiple virtual machines simultaneously running on hardware. However, these changes in system architecture, while improving the whole physical computing resources' utilization, also pay a certain price for virtualization. How to measure this part of CPU overhead, and how about the relationship between this part of CPU overhead and virtual machine number and the type of workload executing in virtual machine are two important questions to the further research of virtualization performance. In this paper we provide a system to measure the overhead of virtualization. With this system we could dynamically obtain the utilization of computing resource. Based on the analysis to the results of several experiments, we compare and study the relationship between the different factors and the overhead of virtualization. Finally, we predict the probably trend of the overhead under the impact of some factors.

The size of volumetric data generated by medical imaging and scientific simulations is increased significantly due to the dramatic advances in medical imaging modalities and computing technologies. The volumetric data generally need to be visualized and marching cubes algorithm (MC for short) is one of the standard methods of the isosurface extraction for the medical applications. However, MC algorithm requires a large amount of data computing power. The cell broadband engine (Cell for short) processor, which is a typical COTS (commodity off-the-shelf) heterogeneous designed to handle extremely demanding computations, can be used to hasten isosurface extraction in medial application. In this paper, we present a streaming model-based scheme to efficiently map MC algorithm to Cell. Specifically, a block-based filter running on PPE is imposed as a preprocessing stage to avoid unnecessary data transfer and computation, and the MC kernel runs on SPEs as the subsequent stage. Through tuning the size of the block, the workload of PPE and SPE is orchestrated harmoniously. The experimental results demonstrate that overall isosurface extraction speedup of more than 10 times is achieved compared with conventional heavy iron CPUs.

Performance monitor for virtual machines can monitor the performance metrics of virtual machines and gain the resource consumption status, and thus provide reliable basis for system performance evaluation and further management. However, at current stage, such performance monitor systems for the virtualized systems are inadequate and inefficient. In this paper, we propose a lightweight performance monitor system model for virtual machines, called PMonitor. Through prototype implementation and experiments, we find that PMonitor consumes very few processing power, which is much lower than other open source performance monitors running on the virtualized environments.

A virtual cluster consists of a multitude of virtual machines and software components that are doomed to fail eventually. In many environments, such failures can result in unanticipated, potentially devastating failure behavior and in service unavailability. The ability of failover is essential to the virtual cluster's availability, reliability, and manageability. Most of the existing methods have several common disadvantages: requiring modifications to the target processes or their OSes, which is usually error prone and sometimes impractical; only targeting at taking checkpoints of processes, not whole entire OS images, which limits the areas to be applied. In this paper we present VirtCFT, an innovative and practical system of fault tolerance for virtual cluster. VirtCFT is a system-level, coordinated distributed checkpointing fault tolerant system. It coordinates the distributed VMs to periodically reach the globally consistent state and take the checkpoint of the whole virtual cluster including states of CPU, memory, disk of each VM as well as the network communications. When faults occur, VirtCFT will automatically recover the entire virtual cluster to the correct state within a few seconds and keep it running. Superior to all the existing fault tolerance mechanisms, VirtCFT provides a simpler and totally transparent fault tolerant platform that allows existing, unmodified software and operating system (version unawareness) to be protected from the failure of the physical machine on which it runs. We have implemented this system based on the Xen virtualization platform. Our experiments with real-world benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness and correctness of VirtCFT.

This paper describes a method using grid technology to improve traffic algorithm efficiency. The method cooperates traffic status estimation algorithm with grid technology. It collects and preprocesses massive real-time data of taxi global positioning system (GPS) as floating car data as well as geographic Information systems (GIS) data of Shanghai urban road network. Then, it adopts grid technology to deal with computation for the shortest time path algorithm on traffic status estimation in real time. The results of experiment prove that the grid technology can greatly improve the computing efficiency of traffic status estimation model.

Virtualization enables multiple guest operating systems run on a single physical platform. These virtual machines may host any types of application, including concurrent HPC programs. Traditionally, VMM schedulers have focused on fairly sharing the processor resources among domains, rarely consider VCPUs' behaviors. However, this can result in poor application performance to overcommitted domains if there are concurrent programs hosted in them. In this paper we review the properties of both Xen's Credit and SEDF schedulers, and show how these schedulers may seriously impact the performance of the communication-intensive and I/O-intensive concurrent applications in overcommitted domains. We discuss the origination of the problem theoretically, and confirm the derived conclusion on benchmarks. A novel approach, that dynamically scales the context switching-frequency by selecting variable time slices according to VCPUs` behaviors, is then proposed to improve the Credit scheduler more adaptive for concurrent applications. The experimental results show that this extended Credit scheduler can improve the performance of communication-intensive and I/O-intensive concurrent applications in overcommitted domains to the same magnitude as in undercommitted domains.

Introducing the P2P (Peer-to-Peer) technology into SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) networks can improve VoIP (Voice on Internet Protocol) system's reliability and scalability, and reduce the operating costs. In order to provide better and more comprehensive services in VoIP system, it is necessary to communicate with the traditional telecommunications networks, including PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), by a voice gateway. The voice gateway system for P2P-based SIP VoIP builds the connection, and transforms signaling and media, between IP service network and PSTN. SIP-in-P2P is implemented in voice gateway system, using DHT (Distributed Hash Table) scheme to connect VGW (Voice Gateway) nodes in the P2P SIP network. Based on the GWMN (Gateway Management Node) protocol, the system can manage VGW nodes in the management domain, and designed the discovery strategies and load balancing strategies to improve the performance. Results indicate that the voice gateway system performs with good reliability, scalability, interoperability and feasibility.

Live migration of virtual machines has been a powerful tool to facilitate system maintenance, load balancing, fault tolerance, and power-saving, especially in clusters or data centers. Although pre-copy is a predominantly used approach in the state of the art, it is difficult to provide quick migration with low network overhead, due to a great amount of transferred data during migration, leading to large performance degradation of virtual machine services. This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel memory-compression-based VM migration approach (MECOM) that first uses memory compression to provide fast, stable virtual machine migration, while guaranteeing the virtual machine services to be slightly affected. Based on memory page characteristics, we design an adaptive zero-aware compression algorithm for balancing the performance and the cost of virtual machine migration. Pages are quickly compressed in batches on the source and exactly recovered on the target. Experiment demonstrates that compared with Xen, our system can significantly reduce 27.1% of downtime, 32% of total migration time and 68.8% of total transferred data on average.
