The study of a hierarchical hadoop architecture in multiple data centers environment

Hadoop is a reasonable tool for cloud computing in big data era and MapReduce paradigm may be a highly successful programming model for large-scale data-intensive computing application, but the conventional MapReduce model and Hadoop framework limit themselves to implement jobs within single cluster. Traditional single-cluster Hadoop may not suitable for situations when data and compute resources are widely distributed this paper focuses on the application of Hadoop across multiple data centers and clusters. A hierarchical distributed computing architecture of Hadoop is designed and the virtual Hadoop file system is proposed to provide global data view across multiple data centers. The job submitted by user can be decomposed automatically into several sub-jobs which are then allocated and executed on corresponding clusters by location-aware manner. Improved weighted average prediction for multi-agent networks

In sense of communication delays, an improved robust consensus algorithm for multi-agent networks and its the convergence rate have been investigated in this paper. Precisely, an improved weighted average prediction has been introduced to reformulate the network model into a neutral network fashion. By virtue of analyzing the Hopf bifurcation, an upper bound of the communication delay is derived for the multi-agent network, which could guarantee the network to achieve weighted average consensus. In addition, the main results show that not only can the proposed method promote the robustness but also improve its convergence rate. Finally, two numerical simulations are provided, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the method. © 2013 Springer science+Business Media New York.

Avalanche dynamics of granular materials under the slumping regime in a rotating drum as revealed by speckle visibility spectroscopy

We used speckle visibility spectroscopy to measure the time-resolved dynamcis of avalanching down the inclined surface of a granular material in a half-full rotating drum operating in the slumping regime. The distribution of the avalanche period, td, rest time between them, tr, and peak particle velocity fluctuation, δvp2, are all normally distributed. While the distributions of the two times at the top and bottom of the free surface are very similar, the particle velocity fluctuation is greater at the bottom of the free surface than at the top. The rest time is observed to be inversely related to the drum speed. Combining this with the relation of tr and the difference of the upper and lower angle of repose for the granular material, Δθ, we find that the latter decreases linearly with increasing rotational speed. We also observe that td increases in a linear fashion with the drum speed. Using the relation of tr and the distance that particles have to move during an avalanche, we further find that a new scaling relation of the mean number of avalanches required to traverse the free surface with drum speed. We find that the slumping frequency increases with the rotating speed before becoming constant in the slumping-to-rolling transition region. Finally, we find that the average peak of the fluctuation speed of the avalanche, δvp2, increases linearly with the drum speed.

A batch-mode active learning method based on the nearest average-class distance (NACD) for multiclass brain-computer interfaces

In this paper, a novel batch-mode active learning method based on the nearest average-class distance (ALNACD) is proposed to solve multi-class problems with Linear Discriminate Analysis (LDA) classifiers. Using the Nearest Average-class Distance (NACD) query function, the ALNACD algorithm selects a batch of most uncertain samples from unlabeled data to improve gradually pre-trained classifiers' performance. As our method only needs a small set of labeled samples to train initial classifiers, it is very useful in applications like Brain-computer Interface (BCI) design. To verify the e®ectiveness of the proposed ALNACD method, we test the ALNACD algorithm on the Dataset 2a of BCI Competition IV. The test results show that the ALNACD algorithm o®ers similar classification results using less sample labeling e®ort than Random Sampling (RS) method. It also provides competitive results compared with active Support Vector Machine (active SVM), but uses less time than the active SVM in terms of the training.

The scale of cloud services keeps increasing over time, significantly introducing huge challenges in system manageability and reliability. Designing coordination services in cloud is the right track to solve the above problems. However, existing coordination services (e.g., Chubby and ZooKeeper) only perform well in read-intensive scenario and small ensemble scales. To this end, we propose Giraffe, a scalable distributed coordination service. There are three important contributions in our design. (1) Giraffe organizes coordination servers using interior-node-disjoint trees for better scalability. (2) Giraffe employs a novel Paxos protocol for strong consistency and fault-tolerance. (3) Giraffe supports hierarchical data organization and in-memory storage for high throughput and low latency. We evaluate Giraffe on a high performance computing test-bed. The experimental results show that Giraffe gains much better write performance than ZooKeeper when server ensemble is large. Giraffe is nearly 300% faster than ZooKeeper on update operations when ensemble size is 50 servers. Experiments also show that Giraffe reacts and recovers more quickly than ZooKeeper against node failures.

Database security prevents the disclosure of confidential data within a database to unauthorized users, and has become an urgent challenge for a tremendous number of database applications. Data encryption is a widely-used cryptographic technique for realizing database security in which the data kept in the database are encrypted into ciphertext. Inspired by Lin et al.’s database encryption system, we propose a record-oriented database encryption scheme based on the Generalized Aryabhata Remainder Theorem (GART). Analysis showed that our proposed scheme is more efficient than Lin et al.’s scheme, while retaining the same security. ©2014.

Cloud computing resources scheduling is essential for executing workflows in the cloud platform because it relates to both execution time and execution cost. In this paper, we adopt a model that optimizes the execution cost while meeting deadline constraints. In solving this problem, we propose an Improved Ant Colony system (IACS) approach featuring two novel strategies. Firstly, a dynamic heuristic strategy is used to calculate a heuristic value during an evolutionary process by taking the workflow topological structure into consideration. Secondly, a double search strategy is used to initialize the pheromone and calculate the heuristic value according to the execution time at the beginning and to initialize the pheromone and calculate heuristic value according to the execution cost after a feasible solution is found. Therefore, the proposed IACS is adaptive to the search environment and to different objectives. We have conducted extensive experiments based on workflows with different scales and different cloud resources. We compare the result with a particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach and a dynamic objective genetic algorithm (DOGA) approach. Experimental results show that IACS is able to find better solutions with a lower cost than both PSO and DOGA do on various scheduling scales and deadline conditions.

Networked Urban Screens offer new possibilities for public health education and awareness. An information video about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) was combined with a custom browser-based video game and successfully deployed on an existing research platform, Screens in the Wild (SitW). The SitW platform consists of 46-in. touchscreen or interactive displays, a camera, a microphone and a speaker, deployed at four urban locations in England. Details of the platform and software implementation of the multimedia content are presented. The game was based on a psychometric continuous performance test. In the gamified version of the test, players receive a score for correctly selected target stimuli, points being awarded in proportion to reaction time and penalties for missed or incorrect selections. High scores are shared between locations. Questions were embedded to probe self-awareness about ‘attention span’ in relation to playing the game, awareness of ADHD and Adult ADHD and increase in knowledge from the video. Results are presented on the level of public engagement with the game and video, deduced from play statistics, answers to the questions and scores obtained across the screen locations. Awareness of Adult ADHD specifically was similar to ADHD in general and knowledge increased overall for 93% of video viewers. Furthermore, ratings of knowledge of Adult ADHD correlated positively with ADHD in general and positively with knowledge gain. Average scores varied amongst the sites but there was no significant correlation of question ratings with score. The challenge of interpreting user results from unsupervised platforms is discussed. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
