Cache plays an important role in multilevel storage system. It can greatly reduce the memory access latency. So the cache hit rate has a significant impact on the performance of the application. Many processors provide cache locking mechanism, which can lock the certain lines in cache. It enables an application to affect the cache replacement decisions under software control. This paper presents a novel method, which uses cache locking mechanism to reduce the run-time of java virtual machine (JVM). JVM often uses just-in-time compiler (JIT) to improve the performance. JIT compiles the method that has been invoked certain times, and then JVM executes the compiled method when invoking this method the next time. This paper analyzes the calling situation of the compiled method in JVM, and then proposes a heuristic approach to lock the compiled method in cache for an appropriate period. It can reduce cache miss rate when JVM executes the compiled method. The algorithm has been implemented in HotSpot based on Loongson-3A. Also, it can be implemented in other run-time systems. Experiment results show that the cache locking heuristic algorithm averagely reduces the cache miss rate by 8.5%, and improves the performance by 4% on the benchmark SPECjvm2008.

Recent advance of virtualization technology provides a new approach to check-point/restart at the virtual machine(VM) *** contrast to traditional process-level checkpointing,checkpointing at the virtualization layer brings up several advantages,such as compatibility,transparence,flexibility and ***,because the virtualization layer has little semantic knowledge about the operation system and the applications running atop,VM-layer checkpointing requires saving the entire operating system state rather than a single *** overhead may render the approach *** reduce the size of VM checkpoint,in this paper we propose a page eviction scheme and an incremental checkpointing mechanism to avoid saving unnecessary VM pages in the *** keep the system online transparently,we propose a live checkpointing mechanism by saving the memory image in a copy-on-write(COW) *** implement the performance optimization mechanisms in a prototype system,called *** results with a group of representative applications show that our page eviction scheme and incremental checkpointing can significantly reduce the checkpoint file size by up to 87% and shorten the total checkpointing/restart time by a factor of up to 71%,in comparison with the Xens default checkpointing *** observed application downtimes due to checkpointing can be reduced to as small as 300 ms.

High throughput sequencing (HTS) generates large amounts of high quality sequence data for microbial genomics. The value of HTS for microbial forensics is the speed at which evidence can be collected and the power to characterize microbial-related evidence to solve biocrimes and bioterrorist events. As HTS technologies continue to improve, they provide increasingly powerful sets of tools to support the entire field of microbial forensics. Accurate, credible results allow analysis and interpretation, significantly influencing the course and/or focus of an investigation, and can impact the response of the government to an attack having individual, political, economic or military consequences. Interpretation of the results of microbial forensic analyses relies on understanding the performance and limitations of HTS methods, including analytical processes, assays and data interpretation. The utility of HTS must be defined carefully within established operating conditions and tolerances. Validation is essential in the development and implementation of microbial forensics methods used for formulating investigative leads attribution. HTS strategies vary, requiring guiding principles for HTS system validation. Three initial aspects of HTS, irrespective of chemistry, instrumentation or software are: 1) sample preparation, 2) sequencing, and 3) data analysis. Criteria that should be considered for HTS validation for microbial forensics are presented here. Validation should be defined in terms of specific application and the criteria described here comprise a foundation for investigators to establish, validate and implement HTS as a tool in microbial forensics, enhancing public safety and national security. © 2014 Budowle et al.;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

In smart building, services are stored as rules and achieved by rule analyzing and executing. However, the irrational contents of rules and conflicts between rules may bring confusion and maloperation in the rule system. In this paper, we propose a lightweight rule verification and resolution framework to solve the problem which provides content anomaly detection and rule conflict detection. We also provide a quick resolution strategy for rule conflicts based on conflict-scenario-analysis so as to guarantee the rule system performing appropriately.

This paper presents practical vision-based collision avoidance for objects approximating a single point feature. Using a spherical camera model, a visual predictive control scheme guides the aircraft around the object along a conical spiral trajectory. Visibility, state and control constraints are considered explicitly in the controller design by combining image and vehicle dynamics in the process model, and solving the nonlinear optimization problem over the resulting state space. Importantly, range is not required. Instead, the principles of conical spiral motion are used to design an objective function that simultaneously guides the aircraft along the avoidance trajectory, whilst providing an indication of the appropriate point to stop the spiral behaviour. Our approach is aimed at providing a potential solution to the See and Avoid problem for unmanned aircraft and is demonstrated through a series of experimental results using a small quadrotor platform.

Based on the principle of QR loop iterations, this paper implements a parallel algorithm based on the hardware of GPU (Graphic Process Unit) by using routines from CUDA (computer Unified Device Architecture) to find the eigenvalues of general matrices. CPU and GPU computing card form a client-server computing framework. Here, CPU can be regarded as a client and GPU card is considered as a computing server. For the experiment environment, this paper chooses a GPU card with the model of NVIDIA GeForce GTX460 as a server side and a CPU with the model of Intel Core i5-760 quad-core as a client side. Win7 64-bit is selected as the operating system. The parallel implementation consists of two parts:PA H and PA QR. PA H is a procedure that transforms a matrix A into the Hessenberg matrix B. PA QR is the actual parallel algorithm of the QR iterations that is imposed on the Hessenberg matrix B for finding eigenvalues of the general matrix A. The speedup ratio of the proposed algorithm is jarless when the number of iterations becomes greater. The experimental results show that the parallel implementation with CUDA on GPU only makes use of less running time than traditional sequential algorithms. The speedup ratio of PA H is between 1.79 and 7.81. The speedup ratio of PA QR is between 3.24 and 118.9. Especially, when the order of general matrix equals 8192, the amount of iterations becomes 10000. The speedup ratio of the PA-H and the PA QR can run up to 7.81 and 118.9 respectively.

Behavior of Collective Cooperation Yielded by Two Update Rules in Social Dilemmas:Combining Fermi and Moran Rules

We combine the Fermi and Moran update rules in the spatial prisoner＇s dilemma and snowdrift games to investigate the behavior of collective cooperation among agents on the regular lattice. Large-scale simulations indicate that, compared to the model with only one update rule, the the role of update dynamics should be paid more attention in cooperation behavior exhibits the richer phenomena, and the evolutionary game theory. Meanwhile, we also observe that the introduction of Moran rule, which needs to consider all neighbor＇s information, can markedly promote the aggregate cooperation level, that is, randomly selecting the neighbor proportional to its payoff to imitate will facilitate the cooperation among agents. Current results will contribute to further understand the cooperation dynamics and evolutionary behaviors within many biological, economic and social systems.

In this paper,we study the influence of the size of interaction neighbors(k) on the evolution of cooperation in the spatial snowdrift *** first,we consider the effects of noise K and cost-to-benefit ratio r,the simulation results indicate that the evolution of cooperation depends on the combined action of noise and cost-to-benefit *** a lower r,the cooperators are multitudinous and the cooperation frequency ultimately increases to 1 as the increase of ***,for a higher r,the defectors account for the majority of the game and dominate the game if the noise is large *** we mainly investigate how k influences the evolution of cooperation by varying the noise in *** find that the frequency of cooperators is closely related to the size of neighborhood and cost-to-benefit ratio *** the case of lower r,the augmentation of k plays no positive role in promoting the cooperation as compared with that of k = 4,while for higher r the cooperation is improved for a growing size of *** last,based on the above discussions,we explore the cluster-forming mechanism among the *** current results are beneficial to further understand the evolution of cooperation in many natural,social and biological systems.
