In this work we use anonymous telecommunication data to investigate how migration influences the dynamics of mobile social networks. We analyze the evolution of social ties for an entire country over a period of 11 months, examining: tie strength, sociality level, distance of ties, and persistence of ties. We find changes in tie strengths pre and post migration, specifically at six months before and a month after migration and discover that on average it takes approximately seven to eight months to restructure ones social network at a new residential location following migration. Moreover, the strongest ties such as those between families and close friends appear to be independent of migration. These ties continue to persist at nearly constant rates, in stark contrast to the weaker ties whose persistence rates drop significantly. Finally, we quantify the interdependency between the persistence rate, social strength, and migration distance;as a result, we are able to estimate how likely a given tie would persist, given the pre-migration social strength and distance of migration. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper is about the technologies in facial animation application. The major contents are as follows:1)We summary the classic image warping algorithms, and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of these algorithms when used in facial animation; 2)We study the principles of Mesh Warping image warping algorithms, and propose a novel Mesh Warping algorithm based on scan lines. The algorithm meets real-time facial animation system in running time, reduces the constraints of constructing splines in some degree, and cuts down the difficulty of image warping, according to experimental results; 3)We introduce MEPG-4 facial animation standard, and implement a speech-driven facial animation system using it. The system makes use of our scan lines Mesh Warping algorithm, which produces a variety of mouth and facial expressions of the speaker, more realistic animation, higher real-time, and better with the speech sync.

Cloud-oriented service mashup can aggregate many services to provide personalized services for end-users on demand. However, how to securely aggregate mashup services becomes a bottleneck of hampering the development of cloud computing. In this paper, we present a secure cloud service mashup framework called SMEF to address this problem. In SMEF, we employ security entropy to measure the unascertained security degree of service mashup. The nonfunctional criteria of SMEF are aggregated as a single criterion by defining a utility function. Then the relatively optimal mashup services are selected to meet the user requirements. Finally, we have implemented a simulation of SMEF and conducted extensive experiments using simulations of different sizes of services and security factors. Experimental results show the feasibility and efficiency of the SMEF service mashup framework.

Aiming at realizing the motion planning and use of manipulator mounted on a mobile robot, the kinematical properties of an non-redundant regional manipulator with less than six joints are investigated. In order to keep good manipulability of end-effector of the mobile manipulator, the end-effector pose and workspace analysis were studied. A method by using an inversion of a workspace formulation through analytical expression to benefit manipulators synthesis design and optimization was proposed. In order to perform a grasp task in a remote area, the motion planning of the mobile manipulator was realized based on both the robot movement and the manipulator operation. Motion planning for a manipulator that grasps a small object was proposed in practical environment. The manipulator motion planning based on its workspace and coordination of two manipulators were investigated with safety considerations. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents an improvement to the stochastic progressive photon mapping (SPPM), a method for robustly simulating complex global illumination with distributed ray tracing effects. Normally, similar to photon mapping and other particle tracing algorithms, SPPM would become inefficient when the photons are poorly distributed. An inordinate amount of photons are required to reduce the error caused by noise and bias to acceptable levels. In order to optimize the distribution of photons, we propose an extension of SPPM with a Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, effectively exploiting local coherence among the light paths that contribute to the rendered image. A well-designed scalar contribution function is introduced as our Metropolis sampling strategy, targeting at specific parts of image areas with large error to improve the efficiency of the radiance estimator. Experimental results demonstrate that the new Metropolis sampling based approach maintains the robustness of the standard SPPM method, while significantly improving the rendering efficiency for a wide range of scenes with complex lighting. © 2011 The Author(s).

As an important part of searching result presentation, query-biased document snippet generation has become a popular method of search engines that makes the result list more informative to users. Generating a single snippet is a lightweight task. However, it will be a heavy workload to generate multiple snippets of multiple documents as the search engines need to process large amount of queries per second, and each result list usually contains several snippets. To deal with this heavy workload, we propose a new high-performance snippet generation approach based on CPU-GPU hybrid system. Our main contribution of this paper is to present a parallel processing stream for large-scale snippet generation tasks using GPU. We adopt a sliding document segmentation method in our approach which costs more computing resources but can avoid the common defect that the high relevant fragment may be cut off. The experimental results show that our approach gains a speedup of nearly 6 times in average process time compared with the baseline approach-Highlighter.

computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) is an emerging branch of learning science concerned with studying how people can learn together with the help of computers. As an indispensable ingredient, computer mediation evolves through couples of phases, e.g. centralized server, peer-to-peer network, grid computing. Nevertheless, with daily rising trend on requirement's dynamic changes in service, existing models fall short to respond on demand. Thus, in this paper, by taking advantage of cloud computing, we propose a feasible CSCL platform and the experiments show that it can not only fulfill the basic requirement of CSCL, but also respond to learner's dynamic need on demand. Value is considered as the ultimate goal of a good service, and whether and to what degree the expected value could be delivered to customers and providers depends on capacities and quality of various functional service elements in service system. Different elements have different contributions to the value production. Due to the limit of available service components to construct the service system, it is necessary to measure the priority of each service element in service models so that those elements with higher value-oriented priorities (VOP) should be implemented by concrete service components earlier and with higher capability during the service system development. This paper presents a quantitative evaluation method of VOP. Basic definition and measurement of service value are firstly introduced, and then VOP is put forward following three types of particular priorities called sensitivity points, tradeoff points and key points. Their characteristics and evaluation principles are presented in details, and the process of the quantitative evaluation method is put forward subsequently. To complement the above discussion, a case study from ocean transportation service is applied for demonstration.

On multicast throughput scaling of hybrid wireless networks with general node density

In this paper, we consider hybrid wireless networks with a general node density λ ∈ [1, n ], where n ad hoc nodes are uniformly distributed and m base stations (BSs) are regularly placed in a square region A ( n , A ) = 1 , A × 1 , A with A ∈ [1, n ]. We focus on multicast sessions in which each ad hoc node as a user chooses randomly d ad hoc nodes as its destinations. Specifically, when d = 1 (or d = n − 1), a multicast session is essentially a unicast (or broadcast) session. We study the asymptotic multicast throughput for such a hybrid wireless network according to different cases in terms of m ∈ [1, n ] and d ∈ [1, n ], as n → ∞. To be specific, we design two types of multicast schemes, called hybrid scheme and BS - based scheme , respectively. For the hybrid scheme, there are two alternative routing backbones : sparse backbones and dense backbones . Particularly, according to different regimes of the node density λ = n A , we derive the thresholds in terms of m and d . Depending on these thresholds, we determine which scheme is preferred for the better performance of network throughput.
