Rapid advances in multichannel neural signal recording technologies in recent years have spawned broad applications in neuro-prostheses and neuro-rehabilitation. The dramatic increase in data bandwidth and volume associated with multichannel recording requires a significant computational effort which presents major design challenges for brain-machine interface (BMI) system in terms of power dissipation and hardware area. In this paper, we present a streaming method for implementing real-time memory efficient neural signal processing hardware. This method exploits the pseudo-stationary property of neural signals and, thus, eliminates the need of temporal storage in batch-based processing. The proposed technique can significantly reduce memory size and dynamic power while effectively maintaining the accuracy of algorithms. The streaming kernel is robust when compared to the batch processing over a range of BMI benchmark algorithms. The advantages of the streaming kernel when implemented on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) devices are also demonstrated.

Selecting the best views for 3D objects is useful for many applications. However, with the existing methods applied in CAD models, the results neither exhibit the 3D structures of the models fairly nor conform to human's browsing habits. In this paper, we present a robust method to generate the canonical views of CAD models, and the above problem is solved by considering the geometry and visual salient features simultaneously. We first demonstrate that for a CAD model, the three coordinate axes can be approximately determined by the scaled normals of its faces, such that the pose can be robustly normalized. A graph-based algorithm is also designed to accelerate the searching process. Then, a convex hull based method is applied to infer the upright orientation. Finally, four isometric views are selected as candidates, and the one whose depth image owns the most visual features is selected. Experiments on the Engineering Shape Benchmark (ESB) show that the views generated by our method are pleasant, informative and representative. We also apply our method in the calculation of model rectilinearity, and the results demonstrate its high performance.

Color mapping plays a critical role in visualization of time-varying data and also sets a challenge for researchers due to the consistency of mapping and great changes in time-varying data. In order to solve this problem and generate feature-prominent animation, we present a two phase optimization technique using bilateral filtering and global energy functions. In the first phase, for each time step, we use a weighted mapping function which combines linear mapping and feature histogram. In the second phase, an optimization function taking global color mapping and minimum color difference into consideration is designed. So users can clearly distinguish between data in variable time steps and easily understand the corresponding relationships between different structures. The experiments' results show that our method can achieve high quality visualization for both static and time-varying data.

In this paper, a new visual saliency detection method is proposed based on the spatially weighted dissimilarity. We measured the saliency by integrating three elements as follows: the dissimilarities between image patches, which were evaluated in the reduced dimensional space, the spatial distance between image patches and the central bias. The dissimilarities were inversely weighted based on the corresponding spatial distance. A weighting mechanism, indicating a bias for human fixations to the center of the image, was employed. The principal component analysis (PCA) was the dimension reducing method used in our system. We extracted the principal components (PCs) by sampling the patches from the current image. Our method was compared with four saliency detection approaches using three image datasets. Experimental results show that our method outperforms current state-of-the-art methods on predicting human fixations.

This paper proposes a novel face recognition algorithm inspired by the selective attention of Human Visual system (HVS). We record four observers' eye movements when they are viewing 100 FRGC [1] frontal view face images and find that the observers are highly consistent in the regions fixated. Inspired by the fact that fovea of HVS has a much higher spatial acuity than the periphery, a face recognition algorithm based on spatial variant sampling is proposed to simulate such foveated imaging phenomenon, where more information is reserved for the fixated regions. Moreover, information extracted from glance which adopts the low spatial frequency components of the image is integrated into the face recognition system to elicit a percept that occurs before any fixations. The experimental results on FERET database [2] demonstrate that the proposed method not only reduces the computational cost, but also achieves comparable performance, which shows that the characteristics of the HVS provide valuable insights into face recognition.

Online Social Networks (OSNs) are becoming immensely popular nowadays, and they change the ways people think and live. In this paper, we propose a novel reputation system which allows users to find potential connections between unfamiliar people based on the most updated friend list of each user in OSNs. To some extent, our scheme provides a way to judge people in OSNs without real interactions, but based on the existing overall attitudes on particular people. Moreover, our scheme can protect the confidentially of the potential relationships in which no one is able to acquire the detailed connections between two end nodes. Contrary to those which publish each individual's reputation online, we treat the reputation value in our system as a private issue that has been carefully guaranteed.

For half a century, computer programs have been widely applied in all areas of industry and daily life. Given any program, whether it can terminate has direct impact on software safety. Many researchers have been working on the termination of programs. One definition of termination is as follows: a program is terminating if it terminates for any initial values;while it is non-terminating if at least one initial value makes it not terminates. Obviously, this definition does not consider program termination's dependency on initial values, and actually presents two extreme situations of the complicated programs in reality. Different from these two situations, this paper discusses what kinds of initial values can guarantee a program to terminate and what kinds of initial values cannot. For some linear loop assignment programs, whose terminations are decidable, the paper proposes a method using limit and backward iteration to derive the initial value set that make programs terminate. © 2011 IEEE.

Analyzing and contracting of E-Business service processes is a crucial step between discovery and execution of Semantic Web services. This paper proposes a service modelling framework consists of constraint-based service contract, agent style communication messages and service process specification. Service contract is used as shared knowledge between participants and instrument for advertising and requesting of services. The Constraint Process Specification proposed is capable of describing complex data and control-flow restrictions as well as data content restrictions. A state transition based operational semantic for this framework is given. A virtual machine is built for analyzing and contracting of services. We illustrate the expressiveness of this framework within an online shopping scenario.

In mathematics, various representations of real numbers have been investigated and all these representations are proved to be mathematically equivalent. Furthermore, it is known that all effective versions of these representations lead to the same class of "computable real numbers". However, when subrecursive (such as primitive recursive) is taken into account, these representations can lead to different notions of "computable real numbers". This paper will look into the polynomial-time version of the problem for computable real numbers under different representations. We will summarize the known results to exhibit the comprehensive hierarchy they form.
