With increasing defect density, microprocessors, especially the embedded caches, will encounter more faults. Adding spare resources to replace defective components is a widely accepted method for yield enhancement. In this work, a repair method using content addressable memory combined with spare bits, as well as a novel fault injection method is proposed. With the proposed fault injection technique, various numbers and types of faults can be flexibly injected into the silicon. A wireless sensor network system using our self-repairable microprocessor (SRP) is developed to prove the effectiveness of the proposed technique. ©The Electrochemical Society.

Heterogeneous multiprocessors are increasingly important in the multi-core era due to their potential for high performance and energy efficiency. In order for software to fully realize this potential, the step that maps computations to processing elements must be as automated as possible. However, the state-of-the-art approach is to rely on the programmer to specify this mapping manually and statically. This approach is not only labor intensive but also not adaptable to changes in runtime environments like problem sizes and hardware/software configurations. In this study, we propose adaptive mapping, a fully automatic technique to map computations to processing elements on a CPU+GPU machine. We have implemented it in our experimental heterogeneous programming system called Qilin. Our results show that, by judiciously distributing works over the CPU and GPU, automatic adaptive mapping achieves a 25% reduction in execution time and a 20% reduction in energy consumption than static mappings on average for a set of important computation benchmarks. We also demonstrate that our technique is able to adapt to changes in the input problem size and system configuration. Copyright 2009 ACM.

With our society more information-driven, we have begun to distribute data in wide-area storage systems. At the same time, both physical failure and logic error have made it difficult to bring the necessary recovery to bear on remote data disaster, and understanding this proceeding. We describe ARRAY, a system architecture for data disaster recovery that combines reliability, storage space, and security to improve performance for data recovery applications. The paper presents an exhaustive analysis of the design space of ARRAY systems, focusing on the trade-offs between reliability, storage space, security, and performance that ARRAY must make. We present RSRAII (Replication-based Snapshot Redundant Array of Independent Imagefiles) which is a configurable RAIDlike data erasure-coding, and also others benefits come from consolidation both erasure-coding and replication strategies. A novel algorithm is proposed to improve snapshot performance referred to as SMPDP (Snapshot based on Multi-Parallel Degree Pipeline).

The task-deployment models of simulation, is mainly used to solve the problem of the unreasonable tasks partition in the simulation of distributed computer network attack and defense exercises. This paper gives a task-deployment model for the simulation of computer network attack and defense exercises through analyzing and formally describing the input, output and the environment of deployment model, constructing the pushdown automaton model of task-deployment - PDAMTD, and validating the termination of the model. This formal validation shows that this model could be computed to the end, and this model prepares for specific algorithms of deployment in theory. ©2009 IEEE.

Value plays a central role in services and is considered as the ultimate objective that both providers and customers pursue through providing and consuming a service. In this paper, based on a brief discussion of the service value concept, we present a service value life cycle model (SVLC), where the value delivery process is decomposed into 7 phases (bi-lateral searching, bi-lateral negotiation, unilateral preparation, co-production, transferring, usage, and payment). Each phasepsilas repeatable tasks, output, quality metrics of the process and output, and possible innovative design decisions, were elaborately analyzed. A C2C service system, ***, is briefly discussed to help understand SVLC in the real world. Comparisons between SVLC and traditional service research shows that SVLC provides some significance to systematical service innovations and service quality metrics design from life cycle (temporal) point of view. Potential effects on service computing research and some future work are also discussed.

Marine logistics service is one of the fundamental production services to support importing and exporting business. There are so many types of service providers (e.g., ship owners, freight forwarders, docks, warehouses, trucking companies, etc) interacting with each other to co-produce value to customers (i.e., cargo owners). Designing an IT-enabled service system to support such complex co-production and improve service quality is quite necessary. Based on investigation of current states and business requirements of this domain, we import BIRIS (bilateral resource integration service) as the mode of the marine logistics service platform. Architectural design of BIRIS-based platform is presented. Key business services are listed and a set of softwarized Web services and their choreographic scenarios that support implementation of business services are illustrationally demonstrated. Several interoperability issues concerned in this platform are summarized and briefly discussed.

In this paper, we present a hormone based tracking strategy called Hormone based Activation (HA) for mobile target tracking in wireless sensor networks inspired by the bio-endocrine system. Hormone messages are used in sensor networks to coordinate sensor nodes for mobile target tracking in a self-adaptive way. Three kinds of hormones are introduced into sensor network for mobile target tracking: Base Hormone (BH),Wakeup Hormone (WH) and Sleep Hormone (SH).Based on different hormone messages, sensor nodes can choose to be asleep or awake in order to get good tracking results with less energy consumed. Comparative experiment shows that our strategy needs fewer nodes to wake up and has a much higher usage ratio of sensor nodes than other tracking strategies.

The Cell Broadband Engine is a typical heterogeneous chip multiprocessor which provides potential high performance for computing-intensive applications. Our researches focus on how to use Cell to speed up block cryptography applications. In this paper, we propose a mapping framework for block cryptography working in ECB mode and corresponding optimizing strategy. We take four algorithms(RC5, 3DES, AES, and Twofish) as benchmark and implement these four algorithms using Cell programming language. In order to enhance the performance, we present an optimizing strategy and evaluate the effects of the optimizing methods including compiler optimization, dual buffering, vectorization, and loop unrolling. The experiments indicate that all these four algorithms can obtain 5-20 times speedup compared with traditional processors, which shows that our mapping framework and optimizing strategy are effective for the block cryptography algorithms.

Automatic generalization of geographical information is the core content of multi-scale representation of spatial data, but the scale dependent generalization methods are far from abundance because of its extreme complicacy. Most existing algorithms about automatic generalization do not relate to scale directly or accurately, not forecast and control the generalized effects, and cannot assess the global consistency of the generalized results. The rational and quantitative methods and criterions of measuring the extent of generalization have not still been sought out. Lifting Scheme is a new branch of Wavelet analysis burgeoning in last decades. It has several noteworthy aspects comparing with the Binary wavelet Transformation. The fundamentals of Lifting Scheme and the three constructing steps, which include Split step, Predict step and Merge step, are presented detailed in this paper. DEM can be represented in multi-scale model by the methods of The Lifting Scheme and The Binary Wavelet Transform. Compare with two methods, the Lifting Scheme has several superiorities by analyzing the experimental results: Firstly, the trend of relief could be preserved in course of transforming;secondly, the Lifting Scheme can process the points of boundary of DEM efficiently and the spatial data precision can also be maintained, and at last the calculation process of Lifting Scheme is more speedy. © 2009 SPIE.

Effective treatment of chronic radiation proctitis using radiofrequency ablation

Endoscopic argon plasma coagulation and bipolar electrocautery are currently preferred treatments for chronic radiation proctitis, but ulcerations and strictures frequently occur. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been successful for mucosal ablation in the esophagus. Here we report the efficacy of RFA with the BarRx Halo⁹⁰ system in three patients with bleeding from chronic radiation proctitis. In all cases, the procedure was well tolerated and hemostasis was achieved after 1 or 2 RFA sessions. Re-epithelialization of squamous mucosa was observed over areas of prior hemorrhage. No stricturing or ulceration was seen on follow-up up to 19 months after RFA treatment. Real-time endoscopic optical coherence tomography (EOCT) visualized epithelialization and subsurface tissue microvasculature pre- and post-treatment, demonstrating its potential for follow-up assessment of endoscopic therapies. © 2009, SAGE Publications.
