We present a novel technique for real-timely rendering translucent objects. Our technique is mainly based on translucent shadow maps with a new adaptive sampling strategy. In this sampling strategy, the hierarchy levels and positions for sampling are selected according to the size of target object. By our optimization, less storage in the texture is required than that in previous methods. Compared with previous methods, our technique provide a way to choose the proper sampling pattern and is applicable for a wider range of object sizes. With the implementation on GPU, the presented technique is able to render translucent objects in animated scenes where lights and material parameters vary real-timely without any lengthy preprocessing.

Knee-related injuries including meniscal tears are common in both young athletes and the aging population, and require accurate diagnosis and surgical intervention when appropriate. With proper techniques and radiologists' experienced skills, confidence in detection of meniscal tears can be quite high. This paper develops a novel computer-aided detection (CAD) diagnostic system for automatic detection of meniscal tears in the knee. Evaluation of this CAD system using an archived database of images from 40 individuals with suspected knee injuries indicates that the sensitivity and specificity of the proposed CAD system are 83.87% and 75.19%, respectively, compared to the mean sensitivity and specificity of 77.41% and 81.39%, respectively, obtained by experienced radiologists in routine diagnosis without using the CAD. The experimental results suggest that the developed CAD system has great potential and promise in automatic detection of both simple and complex meniscal tears of the knee. © 2009 IEEE.

We propose a programmable and scalable traffic management scheme. Programmable traffic management at high-speed routers is difficult because programmability and high-speed packet processing have involved a serious tradeoff. To attain both, the new scheme combines control programs at a control server and simple packet handling functions, such as sampling packet headers and discarding packets, at routers. Therefore, by installing appropriate control programs into the server, a variety of active queue management schemes, per-flow bandwidth management schemes, DoS mitigation schemes, and so on, are achieved. One of the main contributions of this paper is its proposal of a statistical scheme for handling flows. As only a fraction of complete flow information stored at the control server is loaded into the router's flow table and it is replaced cyclically, the proposed scheme scales more than the router's flow table capacity. Our simulation results indicate that the scheme provides efficient traffic management, per-flow WFQ emulation in our example, even with very small flow tables compared to the number of concurrently active flows. Furthermore, we discuss implementation issues with the proposed scheme and reveal that the processing cost at the server and router is sufficiently small for use with 10 Gbps links.

This paper proposes a Sample-Consensus method for viewpoint independent sign language recognition under data deficiency (matched features are possibly deficient with regard to some frame pairs). The proposed method is based on the epipolar geometry and inspired by RANSAC. The basic idea is that all corresponded frames between two sequences of the same sign can be roughly considered as captured synchronously by a virtual stereo vision system and thus they will satisfy the same fundamental matrix. In addition, the fundamental matrix can be estimated from point correspondences contained by some part of corresponding frames. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. Moreover, this Sample-Consensus method can be easily extended to some similar problems, such as viewpoint independent activity analysis and rigid-motion analysis.

This paper presents two new conflict-driven techniques for improving transition fault coverage using multiple scan chains. These techniques are based on a novel test application scheme, in order to break the functional dependency of broadside testing. The two new techniques analyze the ATPG conflicts in broadside test generation, and try to control the flip-flops with most influence on the fault coverage. The conflict-driven method selects some flip-flops that work in the enhanced mode and distributes them into different chains. In the multiple scan chain architecture, to avoid too many scan-in pins, some chains are driven by the same scan-in pin to construct a tree-based architecture. Based on the architecture, the new test application scheme allows some flip-flops working in the enhanced mode, while most of others working in the traditional broadside mode. With the efficient conflict-driven selection method, fault coverage is improved greatly, which can also reduce test application time and compress test data volume. Experimental results show that fault coverage based on the proposed method is comparable to the enhanced scan.

Efficient and stable topological structure is the core of a P2P platform. Current research of topology is all designing for some particular application, such as centralized topology for file sharing, decentralized unstructured topology for live streaming, hybrid topology for VoD streaming, and etc. But their inherent disadvantages make them not able to be applied for platform, which will support many kinds of applications. In order to solve the problem above, a new topology is proposed in this paper. It combines the advantages of current topology models, to create a general-purpose structure for large scale of peers. The whole structure is divided into two tiers: the upper is composed of super nodes, while the lower is composed of ordinary nodes. New topology has been applied in Ripple system. Testing shows that it is good for maintaining the platform stable and scalable, as well as processing joining and leaving of the peers. Besides, it improves the system's load balancing. © 2008 IEEE.

One major problem in applying object-oriented (OO) methodologies is the difficulty of identifying classes for a system. Many tried to use fuzzy set theory to model the objected-oriented system and many proposed linguistic method to do the object analysis. However, little work has been done to identify the classes in OO systematically. After carefully analyzing the cognitive procedure of human being, this paper proposes a two-step identification method: First, tracing the source (the entities in a real world) of a given system. Second, identifying classes via viewpoints based on the source. The method could help people find the intrinsic information and extrinsic concepts epistemologically and employs an informal procedure to get the classes of an OO system easily. © 2008 IEEE.

Due to diversity of data formats, missing of certain properties, imprecise records in heterogeneous literature databases, there exist duplicate records when integrating heterogeneous databases. Duplicate records lower the efficiency of information retrieval. In this paper, we propose an approach, named length filtering and dynamic weighting (LFDW) for duplicate records cleansing. There are three steps in LFDW. The first step is length filtering. In this step, according to the length of record, those record pairs are sifted if there exists a big difference in their lengths. Secondly, this approach detects duplicate records using dynamic weighting properties. Specially, since author name is the important property of literature and one author may has different styles of name, a fuzzy name matching method is adopted to identify the same author who has different name style. Finally, to improve the performance of duplicate detection, we adopt a dynamic sliding-window algorithm when comparing records. The result indicates the time, recall and precision of LFDW are better than traditional ones. © 2008 IEEE.

Fast KD-tree construction method by probing the optimal splitting plane heuristically

In the field of ray-tracing based photo-realistic rendering, kd-tree is used as an important acceleration structure. This paper focuses on the effective construction of kd-tree, and proposes a novel and fast construction method which is based on the binning algorithm. The method is composed of two main steps. Firstly, by analyzing the SAH cost function, the method determines the most-likely sub-span which holds the splitting plane. Secondly, sub-sampling is used on the resulted span to get much better approximation to the optimal splitting plane. Moreover, the paper discusses the exiting schemes on binning termination condition, points out their problems, and proposes a more reasonable termination condition. The experimental results show that the novel approach is effective. Compared with the previous works, it decreases the construction overhead, improves the quality of generated kd-tree, and the construction procedure is more robust as well.

In this paper, space charge in oil-paper insulation system has been investigated using the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) technique. A series of measurements were carried out when the insulation system was subjected to different applied voltages. Charge dynamics in the insulation system during the volts-on, volts-off and decay have been analyzed. It has been found that homocharge injection occurred both at the anode and the cathode. Positive charges are observed to accumulate in the layers, which indicate that the oil-paper layer interfaces act as a barrier for positive charges. The decay tests showed that after 30min, about a quarter of space charges remained in the sample, about 90％ charges disappeared after 2 hours. Finally, total charge variation in these tests were analyzed.
