With the development of virtualization technology, it¿s desirable to deploy virtual machines to high performance clusters used for data centers. VNIX, developed in services computing technology and system lab, tries to help cluster administrators to manage a large number of virtual machines (VMs) distributed on clusters. To reduce the complexity of virtualization management, VNIX provides a whole-set of tools for monitoring, deploying, controlling, and configuring virtual machines on clusters. In addition to those basic management functions, VNIX also offers a number of specialized tools for clustering VMs. Due to the complex dynamic environment in clusters, it¿s challenging to design such tools. In this paper, we present the design of VNIX, and we describe several use cases of managing VMs in clusters with VNIX. Such use cases illustrate various ways of using VNIX to simplify the management work and to improve resource utilization.

Effect of applied DC voltages and temperatures on space charge behaviour of multi-layer oil-paper insulation

In this paper, space charge in a multi-layer oil-paper insulation system was investigated using the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) technique. A series of measurements had been carried following subjection of the insulation system to different applied voltages and different temperatures. Charge behaviours in the insulation system were analyzed and the influence of temperature on charge dynamics was discussed. The test results shows that homocharge injection takes place under all the test conditions, the applied DC voltage mainly affects the amount of space charge, while the temperature has greater influence on the distribution and mobility of space charge inside oil-paper samples.

In this talk, the author discusses some recent advances in desktop virtualization field. Especially, the author talks about desktop virtualization research work in the National 973 Basic Research Program, The Research on Fundamental Theory and Approach of computing system Virtualization. These works include multi-platform supported virtual desktop (MSVD) and HVM supported virtual laptop environment. The design objectives and considerations are discussed in this talk, as well as the system design, performance evaluation compared with other techniques, and some system demonstrations.

The World Wide Web's constant growth and transformation offers great opportunities -and poses many challenges for exploitation. In our information-exploded times, it has been a hot problem that how to improve precision and recall of the content we want to search. After analyze the limitations of traditional method, bring a semantic search forward, and mainly introduce the thought of the semantic retrieval as well as the way to constitute ontology entity and the language that describes it. There has been significant progress in the development and deployment of peer-to-peer (P2P) live video streaming systems. However, there has been little study on the security aspect in such systems. Our prior experiences in Anysee exhibit that existing systems are largely vulnerable to intermediate attacks, in which the content pollution is a common attack that can significantly reduce the content availability, and consequently impair the playback quality. This paper carries out a formal analysis of content pollution and discusses its implications in P2P live video streaming systems. Specifically, we establish a probabilistic model to capture the progress of content pollution. We verify the model using a real implementation based on Anysee system; we evaluate the content pollution effect through extensive simulations. We demonstrate that (1) the number of polluted peers can grow exponentially, similar to random scanning worms. This is vital that with 1% polluters, the overall system can be compromised within minutes; (2) the effective bandwidth utilization can be sharply decreased due to the transmission of polluted packets; (3) Augmenting the number of polluters does not imply a faster progress of content pollution, in which the most influential factors are the peer degree and access bandwidth. We further examine several techniques and demonstrate that a hash-based signature scheme can be effective against the content pollution, in particular when being used during the initial phase.

Automated trust negotiation (ATN) is a new means to establish trust relationship through the mutual exchange of access control policy and credentials in the open and distributed environments. In ATN, access control policy plays a key role in protecting resources from unauthorized access. In practice, a policy may contain sensitive information, and its disclosure may cause damages. In order to protect the sensitive policy or its content, the policy is usually designed complex. Even worse, the policy may be self contradictory, which would lead the negotiation to fail. To solve such a problem, a new approach for checking policy consistency is proposed in the paper. In the approach, we analyze why the policy inconsistency happens and specify how to avoid it by simplifying a compound policy. Meanwhile, the approach is proved useful to hide policy by presenting some useful theorems to generate minimal policy set and credential set.

The programming is still a challenging issue for the high performance distributed computing (HPDC) platform, and it is critical to the popularity of peer-to-peer (P2P) based HPDC systems. Therefore, this paper focuses on the design and implementation of OMP, a one-sided message passing programming model for unstructured P2P computing system, P2HP. Based on taskspsila execution flow, P2HP provides a one-sided point-to-point message-passing communication library, and a software development kit with rich APIs for applicationspsila parallelization. Furthermore, a serial sequence alignment algorithm is parallelized with OMP in P2HP. The evaluation shows that OMP makes P2HP practical and efficient.

The concept of green computing has attracted much attention recently in cluster computing. However, previous local approaches focused on saving the energy cost of the components in a single workstation without a global vision on the whole cluster, so it achieved undesirable power reduction effect. Other cluster-wide energy saving techniques could only be applied to homogeneous workstations and specific applications. This paper describes the design and implementation of a novel approach that uses live migration of virtual machines to transfer load among the nodes on a multilayer ring-based overlay. This scheme can reduce the power consumption greatly by regarding all the cluster nodes as a whole. Plus, it can be applied to both the homogeneous and heterogeneous servers. Experimental measurements show that the new method can reduce the power consumption by 74.8% over base at most with certain adjustably acceptable overhead. The effectiveness and performance insights are also analytically verified.

To understand and predict electromagnetic behavior is one of the most important electrical engineering technologies. FDTD is the key algorithm for solving this kind of problems, which provides a direct, time domain solution to Maxwell's equations in differential form with relatively good accuracy and flexibility. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid parallelization model for FDTD method, which combines the domain distribution scheme and the single instruction multiple data (SIMD) parallelization. This model is able to exploit the computing potential of a new generation parallel machine named cell broadband engine (CBE). The experiment results show that the algorithm obtains approximately linearly speedup with respect to the number of SPEs and has excellent scalability.

In grid computing, group communication is an important strategy to realize large-scale information resource sharing. However, it is very difficult to ensure the security of group communication in large-scale grid environment. In this paper, based on the basic theories of threshold signature and the basic characteristics of group communication in grid, we present four algorithms, including keys generating, individual signature generating and verifying, group signature generating and encrypting, decrypting and group signature verifying, which constitute the authenticated encryption mechanism for group communication in grid. Finally, we validate the correctness of the authenticated encryption mechanism proposed in this paper and analyze its security. In addition, the validity of this mechanism is verified by the experiments. The results show that it is efficient to ensure the security of group communication in grid.
