Prefetching is one of the most important method to improve storage system performance. Without knowing any I/O semantics in device layer, it is not easy now for storage system to exploit semantic information and then to prefetch the data. Many prefetching policies have to relay on simple patterns such as sequentially, temporal locality and loop references to improve storage system performance. Therefore, according to characteristic of storage system, this paper not only introduces a new sequence degree-based clustering algorithm to find the storage areas which will be accessed frequently, but also adopts ARMA time series model to forecast the storage areas on which data will be read frequently later, and their corresponding request time. Moreover, to improve the forecast accuracy, this paper adopts dynamic parameter estimation policy to ARMA model. The results of a large number of simulations validate the accuracy of the clustering algorithm and the preciseness of the ARMA time series model of dynamic parameter estimation policy, and indicate that efficiency of cache prefetching can be greatly improved through applying the clustering algorithm and ARMA time series model.

Key distribution strategy of security multicast in grid

In Grid, it is an important strategy that using multicast to realize the large-scale information resource sharing. However, it is very difficult to ensure the security of multicast. In this paper, based on the basic principles of the centralized key distributed strategy and the distributed key distribution strategy, according to the multicast mechanism in Grid, considering the dynamic factors of multicast members, we present the member hierarchy method for key distribution, the member discovery protocol, the clustering protocol and the key distribution strategy, thus constituting the key distribution strategy of security multicast in Grid. In order to validate the feasibility and the availability of this strategy, a simulation experiment is done. The results show that it is feasible and efficient to ensure the security multicast in Grid.

Ext2 file system is optimized for the management of small files, however, the performance of managing large files is not perfect. The Object-based Storage Device of HOSS[1] (Huge Object-Based Storage system, HOSS) adopts ext2 as the underlying file system, so the performance of managing large objects is limited. Two strategies to improve the reading performance of large objects in OSDs are proposed in this paper. Firstly, local relativity of data blocks on disk is utilized to reconstruct the data block index addresses as Successive Data Blocks Index Array (SDBIA). SDBIA will be taken as one attribute of the object and then the performance of getting the data block index address of large objects will be improved obviously. Secondly, successive blocks allocation strategy is adopted. The experiment shows that these two strategies are effective for the performance of reading large objects.

Subtree partitioning and hashing are two common techniques used for current distributed metadata management schemes. Subtree partitioning schemes do not evenly distribute workload among metadata server cluster, and a number of metadata need to be migrated to achieve coarse load balancing. Though current hashing schemes evenly distribute workload among metadata server cluster, they eliminate the storage locality of files metadata in the same directory. They also can not effectively deal with some operations such as renaming a directory or accessing a file in the path of a linked directory. A new approach called parent Directory Object Identifier and Filename Hashing (DOIDFH) metadata management is proposed, which could distribute evenly files metadata among metadata server cluster, as well as partially hold hierarchical locality. It solves effectively the existent problems of current hashing schemes and also takes advantages of them.

avoid re-encryption in cryptographic storage system when revoking users, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) hardware module have been introduced to a cryptographic object store system, let private key never leave the hardware module and symmetric key only exist in hardware module in plaintext. Anyone doesn 7 know private or symmetric key, so when revoking users, it just needs to modify access control list (A CL) to delete the privileges of the users. To facilitate file sharing and key management, group is adopted. In our system, almost all computationally expensive cryptographic operations are through FPGA/ASIC hardware module. Once creator revokes some users, objects don't need re- encryption. How to use ACL and FPGA/ASIC hardware module to authenticate and authorize are described. And the procedure of object store and the distribution of meta-data are detailed. Finally, a cryptographic object store prototype system is implemented with tested and effective performance.

Traditional disk arrays have a centralized architecture, with a single controller through which all requests flow. Such a controller is a single point of failure, and its performance limits the maximum number of disks to which the array can scale. Fat-trees are well-adopted as the topologies of interconnection networks because of many nice properties they have. We propose a novel fat-tree based parallel RAID architecture - FTRAID. The unit of deployment in FTRAID is a storage node, a small rack-mounted storage appliance built from commodity components including CPU, RAM, NIC and disks. We also establish stochastic Petri net (SPN) model of storage node to analyze its utilization. In particular we have designed and implemented a seven node FTRAID prototype to demonstrate its feasibility. Numerical results using popular benchmark have shown good performance gain.

With the development of the hardware technology of computer architecture, how to utilize the computation power on the future storage device to provide high performance computation and data access has been a hot and challenging task. With more powerful CPU, future infinite capacity disk will be a supercomputer! And we should put applications close to storage objects. Storage object has been proposed in the past, but its definition should be perfected. The goals of the application-based storage project are to combine and distill structured data and unstructured data into an unified model, design an understandable extension to storage object, and most importantly build a working geographic information systems (GIS) (as an application example) which integrates conventional database management and file system by an Unified Storage Middleware (USM) of object-based storage system.

Traditional disk arrays have the internal bus bottleneck and can not scale well. This paper proposes Disk Tree, a novel Fat-tree based heterogeneous multi-tier storage architecture. Disk Tree is built from a collection of storage nodes, small storage appliances containing commodity disks, CPU, RAM and interconnection interfaces. Each node provides moderate levels of reliability, availability, and performance. We examine four possible configurations: striping, mirroring, logging and caching Disk Tree. We have implemented a three-tier and seven-node Disk Tree prototype and carried out extensive performance evaluations using popular benchmark for these four configurations. Depending on different I/O workloads, these four configurations perform quite differently. In general, mirroring and striping disk tree performs well on read-intensive applications while logging and caching disk tree performs well on write-intensive applications.

Generally storage devices only administrate the mapping of logical data space to local physical space while unknowing other information related to data objects. Network or metadata service failure will disable the system, although the data is still on devices intact and correct. Utilizing the redundant computing ability of storage devices, the object interface makes it possible to assist the MDS for metadata services to improve the availability of the system. Though extended attributes of the object interface and computing resource, the management of the object allocation, and local metadata service are enabled in active object storage devices (A-OSD). Based on A-OSDs, a distributed high availability storage system (HASS) characterized by two-level metadata management can be built to achieve higher availability while maintaining good performance. Experiments indicate under the same environment, compared with Lustre, HASS has better write performance and similar read performance besides the potential high availability.
