Huge object-based storage system (HOSS), using objects which possess their own attributes and methods as storage interface, absorbs the advantages of both blocks and files interface. HOSS adopts the interaction among clients, metadata servers and object-based storage device, which has decreased the overload of servers in large measure. After the interactions' flows concerned with I/O operations among the three components described in detail the design and implementation of parallel I/O scheduling is described and discussed. With the buffer, the results show that it enhances the whole system performance efficiently. The performance is better when it's compared with the Lustre system

The security of multimedia data in digital network is commonly provided by encryption. Nevertheless, most current modern encryption algorithms, which only transform a plaintext message that is the simplest form of multimedia data into unintelligible ciphertext, are not appropriate for higher forms such as images and video with very large file sizes. Selective encryption of MPEG video streams has been proposed to reduce encryption requirements, saving in complexity and facilitating new system functionality. In this paper, a two-way selective encryption algorithm (TWAEA) for MPEG video is proposed to compromise the security and speed in the process of encryption

Within high performance backup/restore environment there are cases that require the retrieval of massive data with huge size from tape storage to disks. The data retrieval time affects the system utilization or the system recovering speed. Some schemes were/will be proposed to place data across tape drives for minimized data retrieval latency. SimTape, a Java-based tape library simulator, is built to compare above mentioned allocation schemes which minimize data seek time and tape switch time respectively. This paper describes the development and application of SimTape's software simulation model, also, for the design and optimization of the record, readout and data recovery processes common to all existing tape library processes. The simulation model provides an accurate statistical report from which each scenario can be evaluated

Aiming at the two main shortcomings in Homology Modeling, we have designed and established a domain clustering database. Searching the database is a fundamental work for it. However, current alignment algorithms are mainly based on the sequences, ignoring the structure conservation in domain. This paper proposed a profile-based alignment which considers the structure information into the profile, based on the character of our domain database. We designed an experiment within the database. The results show that both the quality and sensitivity of our scheme are better than pure Smith-Waterman and sequence-based profile algorithms. We strongly believe that this work can help to improve the protein structure prediction

A trend in modern medicine is towards individualization of healthcare and, potentially, grid computing can play an important role in this by allowing sharing of resources and expertise to improve the quality of care. In this paper, we present a new test bed, the BIOPATTERN Grid, which aims to fulfil this role in the long term. The main objectives in this paper are 1) to report the development of the BIOPATTERN Grid, for biopattern analysis and bioprofiling in support of individualization of healthcare. The BIOPATTERN Grid is designed to facilitate secure and seamless sharing of geographically distributed bioprofile databases and to support the analysis of bioprofiles to combat major diseases such as brain diseases and cancer within a major EU project, BIOPATTERN (***);2) to illustrate how the BIOPATTERN Grid could be used for biopattern analysis and bioprofiling for early detection of dementia and for brain injury assessment on an individual basis. We highlight important issues that would arise from the mobility of citizens in the EU, such as those associated with access to medical data, ethical and security;and 3) to describe two grid services which aim to integrate BIOPATTERN Grid with existing grid projects on crawling service and remote data acquisition which is necessary to underpin the use of the test bed for biopattern analysis and bioprofiling. © 2006 The authors. Moving object segmentation in the compressed domain plays an important role in many real-time applications, e.g. video indexing, video surveillance, etc. H.264/AVC is the up-to-date video coding standard, which employs several new coding tools and provides a different video format. In this paper, a robust spatio-temporal segmentation approach to extract moving objects in the compressed domain for H.264 video stream is proposed. Coarse moving objects are firstly extracted from the motion vector field through the MRF classification process. Spatial segmentation is based on the HT coefficient, which is used to refine the object boundary of temporal segmentation results. Fusion of spatio-temporal segmentation is based on region projection based labeling technique. Further edge refinement is performed to smooth the object boundaries. The performance of the proposed approach is illustrated by simulation carried on several test sequences. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can provide the visually similar results as by using spatial domain process with much less computational complexity.

For storage system, data service only passively responds to data consumer's requests. With the increasing requirements of mass data storage and the development of the hardware technology of computer architecture, storage active service becomes a crucial research topic. How to utilize the computation power on the future storage device to provide high performance computation and data access has been a hot and challenging task. Storage object is a fundamental unit that comprises not only data but also attributes. Storage object has been proposed in the past, but its definition should be extended. The goals of the storage active service project are to combine and distill previous work into a simple and usable model, design a storage active service mechanism as an understandable extension to object, and most importantly build a working system - a system that augments conventional structured and unstructured data management with data, attributes and trigger as an integral part of the storage object. This paper provides numerous motivating practices for storage active service and lays out preliminary plans for the forecast mechanism based on psychology

Cyber theft is a serious threat to Internet security. It is one of the major security concerns by both network service providers and Internet users. Though sensitive information can be encrypted when stored in non-volatile memory such as hard disks, for many e-commerce and network applications, sensitive information is often stored as plaintext in main memory. Documented and reported exploits facilitate an adversary stealing sensitive information from an application's memory. These exploits include illegitimate memory scan, information theft oriented buffer overflow, invalid pointer manipulation, integer overflow, password stealing Trojans and so forth. Today's computing system and its hardware cannot address these exploits effectively in a coherent way. This paper presents a unified and lightweight solution, called InfoShield that can strengthen application protection against theft of sensitive information such as passwords, encryption keys, and other private data with a minimal performance impact. Unlike prior whole memory encryption and information flow based efforts, InfoShield protects the usage of information. InfoShield ensures that sensitive data are used only as defined by application semantics, preventing misuse of information. Comparing with prior art, InfoShield handles a broader range of information theft scenarios in a unified framework with less overhead. Evaluation using popular network client-server applications shows that InfoShield is sound for practical use and incurs little performance loss because InfoShield only protects absolute, critical sensitive information. Based on the profiling results, only 0.3% of memory accesses and 0.2% of executed codes are affected by InfoShield.

Workflow management technologies play a very important role in constructing grid application environment by automating service composition and execution. With the fast spread of grid technology, workflow management system should be flexible to meet increasing requirements of service composition. This paper introduces a distributed workflow management approach DWM4CGSP named distributed workflow management for CGSP, which can improve capability of workflow execution by dynamically assimilating new workflow engines and balancing workload among these engines. Moreover dynamic load balancing is applied in DWM4CGSP in order to make workload on each engine at reasonable level. Finally an implementation demonstrates that DWM4CGSP works well in CGSP and can be further extended to other similar grids

In a grid workflow, data transfer scheme plays a key role on its performance. In most grid projects, data is transferred between source and destination directly in the traditional way, without considering the status of network. In this paper, we present a data transfer scheme of grid workflow based on weighted directed graph. The scheme selects data transfer model according to the job's data processing rate. Based on the different bandwidths between grid nodes, it builds a weighted directed graph to select a best transfer path. Simulation results show that the scheme can effectively improve the performance of grid workflows
