The FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) mission proposes to launch a satellite for the global monitoring of steady-state chlorophyll fluorescence in terrestrial vegetation. Fluorescence is a sensitive probe of photosynthetic function in both healthy and physiologically perturbed vegetation, and a powerful non-invasive tool to track the status, resilience, and recovery of photochemical processes and moreover provides important information on overall photosynthetic performance with implications for related carbon sequestration. The early responsiveness of fluorescence to atmospheric, soil and plant water balance, as well as to atmospheric chemistry and human intervention in land usage makes it an obvious biological indicator in improving our understanding of Earth system dynamics. The amenability of fluorescence to remote, even space-basedobservation qualifies it to join the emerging suite of space-based technologies for Earth observation. FLEX would encompass a three-instrument array for measurement of the interrelated features of fluorescence, hyperspectral reflectance, and canopy temperature. FLEX would involve a space and ground-truthing program of 3-years duration and would provide data formats for research and applied science.

Improved vicinal SV algorithm

Two improvements are introduced into vicinal-risk-minimization based support vector (SV) algorithm. Since the misclassified samples must be support vectors, a scheme for pruning hard-to-learn samples from the training set based on support vectors is presented. The parameter's determination of Gaussian vicinal function is proposed to be modified, based on the maximum likelihood criterion. Preliminary experimental results show that the pruning scheme and improvement of the parameter's determination of vicinal function much improved vicinal SV algorithm's generality, and can outperform support vector machine (SVM) by about 0.5% in test accuracy.

Recent research in mining user access patterns for predicting Web page requests focuses only on consecutive sequential Web page accesses, i.e., pages which are accessed by following the hyperlinks. In this paper, we propose a new method for mining user access patterns that allows the prediction of multiple non-consecutive Web pages, i.e., any pages within the Web site. Our approach consists of two major steps. First, the shortest path algorithm in graph theory is applied to find the distances between Web pages. In order to capture user access behavior on the Web, the distances are derived from user access sequences, as opposed to static structural hyperlinks. We refer to these distances as minimum reaching distance (MRD) information. The association rule mining (ARM) technique is then applied to form a set of predictive rules which are further refined and pruned by using the MRD information. The proposed approach is applied as a collaborative filtering technique to recommend Web pages within a Web site. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach improves performance over the existing Markov model approach in terms of precision and recall, and also has a better potential of reducing the user access time on the Web

This paper presents a system that tracks human heads in real-time under unconstrained environments where target occlusion, varying illumination, and cluttered backgrounds exist. Tracking is formulated as an active visual servo problem based on the integration of a saccade and a smooth pursuit processes. The head is modelled as an ellipse computed from the color clusters of candidate targets using a robust least square ellipse fitting algorithm. The Farnsworth Perceptually Uniform Color Model is employed to represent the color information of the visual objects. Kalman filtering is applied to the head ellipse to track the evolution of the position, size, and orientation of the target such that the occlusion of objects with similar color and shape as those of the target are effectively accommodated. Experiments with tracking scenarios demonstrate the effectiveness of the system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

USN realizes the integration of SAN and NAS with IP network, but it brings new security consideration such as user authorization, data privacy and integrity. A USN model based on the third party transfer protocol is suggested to realize the security scheme. This security scheme has the following characteristics: A key distribution scheme is used to create credentials for users in order to reduce authorization server performance penalty;Using HMAC authenticates users requests so as to minimize computation overhead;Performing encryption/decryption of data at clients and storing data checksums on the storage will minimize the storage performance penalty;The lockbox is used to integrate keys in order to minimize the sum of keys need managed by authorization server. Experiments show that it takes less than 10% performance overhead to realize the security scheme for USN comparing the baseline USN. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper, we identify the access control requirements for data grid and describe a new distributed access control model to meet these requirements. The model integrates ticket-based data access control and extends access control list. The data sharing and access control among different users and groups are completed by the combination of team-based access control methods and role-based access control methods, called group-and-role-based access control. In this paper, we present the GDSS system to describe this model and evaluate the performance.

Grid services provide an important abstract layer on top of heterogeneous components (hardware and software) that take part into a Grid environment. In this scenario, applications, like scientific visualization, require access to data of non-conventional data types, like fluid path geometry, and the evaluation of special user programs on these data. In order to support such applications we are developing CoDIMS-G, which is a data and program integration service for the Grid. CoDIMS-G provides users transparent access to data and programs distributed on the Grid, as well as dynamic resource allocation and management. We conceived a new node scheduling algorithm and designed an adaptive distributed query engine for the grid environment. Copyright 2004 ACM.

In this work, a new DNA-based semantic model is proposed and described theoretically. This model, referred to as ‘semantic model based on molecular computing’ (SMC) has the structure of a graph formed by the set of all attribute-value pairs contained in the set of represented objects, plus a tag node for each object. Attribute layers composed of attribute values then line up. Each path in the network, from an initial object-representing tag node to a terminal node represents the object named on the tag. Application of the model to a reasoning system was proposed, via virtual DNA operation. On input, objectrepresenting dsDNAs will be formed via parallel self-assembly, from encoded ssDNAs representing (value, attribute)-pairs (nodes), as directed by ssDNA splinting strands representing relations (edges) in the network. The computational complexity of the implementation is estimated via simple simulation, which indicates the advantage of the approach over a simple sequential model. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

A real-time unwanted-audio cancellation system is developed. The system enhances recorded sound by canceling unwanted loudspeaker sounds picked up during the recording. After cancellation, the resulting sound gives an improved estimation of the live performer’s sound. The cancellation works by estimating the unwanted audio signal and subtracting it from the recorded signal. The canceller is composed of a delay block and two adaptive digital filters. Our work extends conventional echo-cancellation methods to address problems we encountered in music applications. We describe a real-time implementation in Aura and present experimental results in which the proposed canceller enhances the performance of a real-time pitch detector. The cancellation ratio is measured and limitations of the system are discussed. © ICMC 2004. All rights reserved.
