We present a mechanism called the Markov model mediator (MMM) to facilitate the effective retrieval for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Different from the common methods in content-based image retrieval, our stochastic mechanism not only takes into consideration the low-level image content features, but also learns high-level concepts from a set of training data, such as access frequencies and access patterns of the images. The advantage of our proposed mechanism is that it exploits the structured description of visual contents as well as the relative affinity measurements among the images. Consequently, it provides the capability to bridge the gap between the low-level features and high-level concepts. Our experimental results demonstrate that the MMM mechanism can effectively assist in retrieving more accurate results for user queries. © 2003 IEEE.

The mission system of an aircraft is a complex real-time distributed system consisting of a mission control computer, different kinds of devices interconnected by a number of serial data buses. The complexity and real-time requirements of mission systems have motivated research into the application of formal techniques to investigate and predict the effects of upgrades on mission system behaviour. We report on a joint research project between the University of South Australia and Australia's Defence science and technology Organisation. In previous work we modelled a generic avionics mission system with coloured Petri nets and analysed the model using state spaces. Here, we describe how this model was refined and modified to obtain a coloured Petri net model for the AP-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft.

We show that deterministic quantum computing with a single bit can determine whether the classical limit of a quantum system is chaotic or integrable using O(N) physical resources, where N is the dimension of the Hilbert space of the system under study. This is a square-root improvement over all known classical procedures. Our study relies strictly on the random matrix conjecture. We also present numerical results for the nonlinear kicked top.

Multimedia data, typically image data, is increasing rapidly across the Internet and elsewhere. To keep pace with the increasing volumes of image information, new techniques need to be investigated to retrieve images intelligently and efficiently. Content-based image retrieval is always a challenging task. In this paper, a stochastic model, called Markov Model Mediator (MMM) mechanism, is used to model the searching and retrieval process for content-based image retrieval. Different from the common methods, our stochastic model carries out the searching and similarity computing process dynamically, taking into consideration not only the image content features but also other characteristics of images such as their access frequencies and access patterns. Experimental results demonstrate that the MMM mechanism together with the stochastic process can assist in retrieving more accurate results for user queries. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

An abstract multimedia semantic model called the multimedia augmented transition network (MATN) model is proposed to model the RTSP-based (real-time streaming protocol) multimedia presentation systems. RTSP provides a set of methods to support the functionality of "VCR-like" remote control on the client side so that users are allowed to control playback of the streaming media. The MATN model is used to model RTSP actions as well as temporal relations and synchronization control of the media streams. The advantages of using the MATN model are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of modification. Furthermore, a formal definition of the MATN model and modeling of RTSP actions using the MATN model are presented in detail. © 2002 IEEE.

A novel hierarchical approach to image retrieval is proposed. First, a color label histogram is used to effectively filter out the images that are not similar to the query image in color. The proposed color label histogram built by categorizing the pixel colors is computationally much more efficient compared to other approaches. Next, the class parameters of those images passing the first filter are used to identify the images similar to the query image in spatial layout. These class parameters are obtained automatically from the proposed unsupervised segmentation algorithm. Moreover, the wavelet decomposition coefficients are used to generate the initial partition for the segmentation algorithm. It doubles the segmentation performance. At the last stage, all images passing two filters are ranked based on the total normalized distance in color and spatial layout. The experiments show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

With the adoption of UML by the OMG and industry as the lingua-franca of visual systems modelling, one begins to ponder what will come next in this field? This tutorial brings a vision for visual modelling beyond UML. We present and consolidate radical new notations, proposed in a series of research papers and with quickly increasing adoption by industry, for the specification of complex systems in an intuitive visual, yet precise manner. The recurring theme of these notations is the upgrading of familiar diagrams into a powerful visual language. Spider diagrams considerably extend Venn diagrams to the specification of object-oriented (OO) systems. Most familiar OO concepts are translated into set-theoretical terms: classes into sets of objects, inheritance corresponding to subsets, and even statecharts are interpreted as the set of objects in that state. Constraint diagrams enhance the arrow notation to describe static system invariants which cannot be described by UML class-object diagrams. Reasoning rules are developed for the notation and strong completeness results are given. Finally, 3D diagrams show how the third dimension and VRML modelling can be used for a conceptual modelling of dynamic system behaviour. Much of the tutorial is based on a case study developed in industry, illustrating how the new notations are combined with those of UML, including OCL.
