Container based microservices have been widely applied to promote the cloud elasticity. The mainstream Docker containers are structured in layers, which are organized in stack with bottom-up dependency. To start a microservice, the required layers are pulled from a remote registry and stored on its host server, following the layer dependency order. This incurs long microservice startup time and hinders the performance efficiency. In this paper, we discover that, for the first time, the layer pulling order can be adjusted to accelerate the microservice startup. Specifically, we address the problem on microservice layer pulling orchestration for startup time minimization and prove it as NP-hard. We propose a Longest-chain based Out-of-order layer Pulling Orchestration (LOPO) strategy with low computational complexity and guaranteed approximation ratio. Through extensive real-world trace driven experiments, we verify the efficiency of our LOPO and demonstrate that it reduces the microservice startup time by 22.71% on average in comparison with state-of-the-art solutions.

Existing temporal community search suffers from two defects: (i) they ignore the temporal proximity between the query vertex q and other vertices but simply require the result to include q. Thus, they find many temporal irrelevant vertices (these vertices are called query-drifted vertices) to q for satisfying their cohesiveness, resulting in q being marginalized;(ii) their methods are NP-hard, incurring high costs for exact solutions or compromised qualities for approximate/heuristic algorithms. Inspired by these, we propose a novel problem named query-centered temporal community search to circumvent query-drifted vertices. Specifically, we first present a novel concept of Time-Constrained Personalized PageRank to characterize the temporal proximity between q and other vertices. Then, we introduce a model called β-temporal proximity core, which can combine temporal proximity and structural cohesiveness. Subsequently, our problem is formulated as an optimization task that finds a β-temporal proximity core with the largest β. To solve our problem, we first devise an exact and near-linear time greedy removing algorithm that iteratively removes unpromising vertices. To improve efficiency, we then design an approximate two-stage local search algorithm with bound-based pruning techniques. Finally, extensive experiments on eight real-life datasets and nine competitors show the superiority of the proposed solutions. © 2023, CC BY.

sEMG (surface electromyography) signal control of bionic prostheses has been widely studied over the past few years. In particular, sparse sEMG signals are rapidly developing in the field of gesture recognition for their convenience, noninvasiveness, and ease of access. However, compared with high-density EMG signals, sparse EMG signals lack rich feature information, which in turn affects gesture recognition accuracy. In order to reduce the loss of feature information of sparse EMG signals in the spatio-temporal dimension, this paper proposes a hybrid neural network Res-LSTM combining residual network and long short-term memory network. The ordinary convolutional blocks in the CNN network are replaced with residual blocks, and the final fully connected layer is removed and a constant mapping layer is added to adequate extraction of spatial feature information of the data. The Res layer’s output is utilized as the input for the long and short-term memory (LSTM) network, which further extracts the features of the data in the temporal dimension, and finally completes the categorization output through a fully connected layer. The average accuracy of 91.11% for gesture-motion classification was verified by training on a homebrew dataset;and tested on a public dataset, NinaPro DB1, with an average accuracy of 91.03%. The experimental findings indicate that the proposed Res-LSTM network framework contributes to solving the problem of lack of feature information of sparse sEMG signals and improves the pattern recognition accuracy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

In the fashion recommendation system, with the increase in the number of clothing, the combination of clothing matching is growing exponentially, which leads to the slowdown of training speed and excessive memory usage, and other problems are becoming more and more prominent. Hashing technology can effectively reduce memory usage and improve the recommendation speed. With more and more product images accompanied by text descriptions, multi-modal modeling has become a research hotspot in recommendation systems. Most of the past research adopts the method of processing different modal information separately and then weighting and averaging, but the correlation between the two modalities is not fully utilized. We believe that the visual and textual features of the same product are semantically consistent and have the same aesthetic characteristics. Therefore, we try new modeling approaches to mine the higher-order connections between the two modalities. Another issue is that visual information is much more important than textual information in fashion recommendation systems, so it is not reasonable to equate the two modalities. We model the hash-processed binary representation, optimize the network structure to include visual features in the ranking to compute the loss, and also use textual features to assist the image features for modeling. Tests on two larger datasets from Polyvore show that our model exhibits significant results compared to state-of-the-art models on key evaluation metrics such as user-personalized recommendation and compatibility modeling. © 2024 SPIE.

Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) are difficult to detect and defend due to their high variability and concealment. Current APT detection and investigation approaches suffer from two major problems. First, most recent models heavily rely on heuristic rules derived from a large amount of expensive prior knowledge, which in turn prevents the models from generalizing to new types of APT attacks. Second, the development of existing fully supervised models is limited by the scarcity of APT attack data. In this paper, we first construct the provenance graph by introducing logical entities to reduce the dependency on prior knowledge. Then we propose a novel self-supervised representation-learning based model, AISLE, for the investigation of the APT attack, which consists of a graph structure encoder (GSE) and an entity interaction pattern encoder (IPE). The GSE employs a graph attention auto-encoder to effectively compress the structural information of the graph;and the IPE employs a LSTM auto-encoder to extract the interaction patterns of entities from their interaction history. The two entity embeddings calculated respectively by the two auto-encoders are concatenated to form the final representation of the entity, which is evaluated by the attack investigation module to identify attack entities. Our model is evaluated on ten real-world APT attacks in a realistic virtual environment. The results show that our model can achieve superior generalization ability and consistently outperform the latest state-of-the-art APT attack investigation approaches. © 2022 IEEE.

Speech-language multi-modal learning presents a significant challenge due to the fine nuanced information inherent in speech styles. Therefore, a large-scale dataset providing elaborate comprehension of speech style is urgently needed to facilitate insightful interplay between speech audio and natural language. However, constructing such datasets presents a major trade-off between large-scale data collection and high-quality annotation. To tackle this challenge, we propose an automatic speech annotation system for expressiveness interpretation that annotates in-the-wild speech clips with expressive and vivid human language descriptions. Initially, speech audios are processed by a series of expert classifiers and captioning models to capture diverse speech characteristics, followed by a fine-tuned LlaMA for customized annotation generation. Unlike previous tag/templet-based annotation frameworks with limited information and diversity, our system provides in-depth understandings of speech style through tailored natural language descriptions, thereby enabling accurate and voluminous data generation for large model training. With this system, we create SpeechCraft, a fine-grained bilingual expressive speech dataset. It is distinguished by highly descriptive natural language style prompts, containing approximately 2,000 hours of audio data and encompassing over two million speech clips. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed dataset significantly boosts speech-language task performance in stylist speech synthesis and speech style understanding. © 2024 Owner/Author.

The Metaverse is the fusion of multiple immersive digital technology platforms such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality. This paper aims to provide insights into what edge computing will do for consumer devices for Metaverse. We define and discuss a system architecture with edge-computing capabilities to support real-time data processing and analysis to address the required latency for energy efficient and better user experience. All results are based on a comparative study of real-time simulations using the dataset provided by UCI Machine Learning Repository for the proposed approach. The results are compelling across several cases of reduced latency and minimized energy consumption and user satisfaction. Our analyses further demonstrate that there is a potential to integrate edge computing into consumer devices for delivering consumers the immersive fully realized Metaverse experiences in real-time. Further work will include the focus on the possible scalability for the system, along with the extension of its practical usage. © 2024 IEEE.

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) built on contrastive learning, such as CLIP, demonstrate great transferability and excel in downstream tasks like zero-shot classification and retrieval. To further enhance the performance of VLMs, existing methods have introduced additional parameter modules or fine-tuned VLMs on downstream datasets. However, these methods often fall short in scenarios where labeled data for downstream tasks is either unavailable or insufficient for fine-tuning, and the training of additional parameter modules may considerably impair the existing transferability of VLMs on open-set tasks. To alleviate this issue, we introduce WaveDN, a wavelet-based distribution normalization method that can boost the VLMs' performance on downstream tasks without parametric modules or labeled data. Initially, wavelet distributions are extracted from the embeddings of the sampled, unlabeled test samples. Subsequently, WaveDN conducts a hierarchical normalization across the wavelet coefficients of all embeddings, thereby incorporating the distributional characteristics of the test data. Finally, the normalized embeddings are reconstructed via inverse wavelet transformation, facilitating the computation of similarity metrics between the samples. Through extensive experiments on two downstream tasks, using a total of 14 datasets covering text-image and text-audio modal data, WaveDN has demonstrated superiority compared to state-of-the-art methods. © 2024 ACM.

Logic diagnosis is a key step in yield learning. Multiple faults diagnosis is challenging because of several reasons, including error masking, fault reinforcement, and huge search space for possible fault combinations. This work proposes a two-phase method for multiple-fault diagnosis. The first phase efficiently reduces the potential number of fault candidates through machine learning. The second phase obtains the final diagnosis results, by formulating the task as an combinational optimization problem that is later iteratively solved using binary evolution computation. Experiments shows that our method outperforms two existing methods for multiple-fault diagnosis, and achieves better diagnosability (improved by $1.87\times$ ) and resolution (improved by $1.42\times$ ) compared with a state-of-the-art commercial diagnosis tool.

5G Core network (5GC) employs a Service Based Architecture (SBA). This architecture decomposes the control plane into multiple independent Network Functions (NFs). NFs open interfaces to provide services to other NFs, which makes the control plane more susceptible to external malicious attacks. However, existing anomaly detection methods focus more on traffic statistics features and are difficult to apply to the 5GC control plane. In this paper, we proposed GSAD, a Graph-Sequence analysis-based Anomaly Detection method for 5GC control plane traffic. We model control plane traffic as a directed graph to depict topological and NF interaction information. Further, we use the normalizing flows with temporal dependencies to mine the sequential information in the traffic. GSAD combines the topological and sequential information to provide fine-grained detection. We evaluate our proposed framework on the 5GC testbed using Free5GC and UERANSIM in various scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework outperforms the baselines significantly in terms of detection performance. © 2023 IEEE.
