Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Android's permission system offers an all-or-nothing installation choice for users. To make it more flexible, users may choose a popular app tool, called permission manager, to selectively grant or revoke an app's permissions at runtime. A fundamental requirement for such permission manager is that the granted or revoked permissions should be enforced faithfully. However, we discover that none of existing permission managers meet this requirement due to permission leaks. To address this problem, we propose CICC, a finegrained, semantic-aware, and transparent approach for any permission managers to defend against the permission leaks. Compared to existing solutions, CICC is fine-grained because it detects the permission leaks using call-chain information at the component instance level, instead of at the app level or component level. The fine-grained feature enables it to generate a minimal impact on the usability of running apps. CICC is semantic-aware in a sense that it manages call-chains in the whole lifecycle of each component instance. CICC is transparent to users and app developers, and it requires minor modification to permission managers. Our evaluation shows that CICC incurs relatively low performance overhead and power consumption. Copyright 2015 ACM.

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

Multi-tenant service-based systems (SBSs) have become a major paradigm in software engineering in the cloud environment. Instead of serving a single end-user, a multitenant SBS provides multiple tenants with similar and yet customised functionalities with potentially different quality-of service (QoS) values. Thus, existing approaches to service selection for single-tenant SBSs are no longer suitable. Furthermore, the target multi-tenancy maturity level also needs to be considered in the service selection approach for an SBS. In this paper, we propose three novel QoS-aware service selection approaches for composing multi-tenant SBSs that achieve three different multi-tenancy maturity levels. Extensive and comprehensive experiments are conducted and the experimental results show that our approaches outperform the existing approach in both effectiveness and efficiency.

Huge amount of entities and theirs relationships are posted on the Web. Those entities and theirs relationship networks help many activities. In this paper, we focus on the task of extracting academic entity network from homepages. Homepages usually contain many entities, such as persons, conference/journal and organization and theirs relationship. However, homepages don't follow a unified layout format and often contains similar information, but differs greatly in layouts and styles, which makes it impossible to use a unified set of rules to handle them all. Thus we propose an integrated approach to automatically extract data from unstructured texts. The main idea of the approach is to adopt the most suitable approach to extract entities. Thus, the approach is self-adaptive. Firstly, the approach decomposes web pages into text units and then classifier is used to determine units' type. Once the units' types are known, the different technologies are chosen to deal with them. For example, edit distance and inverted index are used to identify names etc. And Conditional Random Field technology is considered the best solution to extract publication entries. The result shows that LineX has achieved high performance on extracting entities from web pages in academic community.

Key distribution is important to provide security guarantee for mobile services of Internet of Things (IoT). Traditional key distribution methods hardly provide single data server the promise to build multiple high-level secure real-time service channels simultaneously with high efficiency. In this paper we consider real-time data collecting or monitoring scenarios, which is commonly happened in health-care. In these scenarios, traditional key distribution approaches in public-key setting have difficulties on considering both security and efficiency during interactions. Besides, anonymity also shows importance during key distribution processes to keep personal privacy. In this paper we propose a secure real-time mobile service system and the corresponding security model, and novelly apply an Identity-Based Key Encapsulation Mechanism (IBKEM) in the proposed system as an instantiation that achieves one-pass anonymous key distribution in batch for mobile clients. The instantiated system shows both high-level security and efficiency in practice.

Cloud-based software applications (Software as a Service - SaaS) for multi-tenant provisioning have become a major development paradigm in Web engineering. Instead of serving a single end-user, a multi-tenant SaaS provides multiple end-users with the same functionality but with potentially different quality-of-service (QoS) values. The service selection for such a SaaS is a complex decision-making process which involves a number of stakeholders with different QoS requirements. SaaS developers need to compose services with different QoS values to meet end-users' different multidimensional QoS constraints for the SaaS. Furthermore, they also need to satisfy SaaS providers' optimisation goals for the SaaS, such as least resource cost and best system performance. Existing QoS-aware service selection approaches are oriented at a single tenant. They do not consider the characteristics of multi-tenant SaaS and hence are ineffective and inefficient when applied to compose multi-tenant SaaS. In this paper, we introduce a novel QoS-driven approach for helping SaaS developers select the services for composing multi-tenant SaaS, which achieves SaaS providers' optimisation goals while fulfilling the end-users' different levels of QoS constraints. The proposed approach is evaluated using an example SaaS synthetically generated based on a dataset of real-world Web services. Experimental results show that our approach significantly outperforms existing approaches in terms of both effectiveness and performance. © 2012 IEEE.

The service-oriented paradigm offers support for engineering service-based systems (SBSs) based on service compositions. The selection of services with the aim to fulfil the quality constraints for SBSs and to achieve the optimisation goals is a critical and challenging issue. In particular, when the quality-of-service (QoS) constraints for a SBS are severe, it is often difficult to find an optimal solution for the SBS. Exploiting the competition among service providers can help SBS developers obtain favourable QoS offers for the component services of SBSs and increase the possibility of finding optimal solutions for the SBSs. In this paper, we present a novel joint optimisation and negotiation approach named Iterative Negotiation for Service Composition (INSC) that supports effective and efficient QoS-aware service selection for SBSs. We evaluate INSC experimentally using example SBSs that are synthetically generated based on a real-world Web service dataset. The experimental results show that INSC can significantly and efficiently increase the possibility of finding optimal solutions in severe service composition scenarios. © 2012 IEEE.

Adaptive Information Filtering is a challenging computational problem that requires a high dimensional feature space. However, theoretical issues arise when vector-based representations are adopted in such a space. In this paper, we use AIF as a test bed to provide experimental evidence indicating that the learning abilities of vector-based Artificial immune systems are diminished in a high dimensional space.
