With the development of computer science, desktop virtualization technology is more and more popular. In virtualized desktop, it is a very significant research to share periphery devices in the client-end computer seamlessly. We implement a device sharing mechanism to extend the universal serial bus in client-end host to the network for server-end host using transparently. This virtual device bus is deployed in the driver layer so that most applications and drivers in virtualized desktop could access remote shared devices through original interface. After deploying the virtual device bus driver, the duplicated virtual device could be accessed just like a real local device. In our implementation, the virtual device bus driver, which is the main module for virtualizing real USB devices and the interface for applications, is OS independent. Experiments show that the mechanism has a very friendly and easy interface to access virtual USB devices, and good performance. © 2011 IEEE.

The maintenance of unstructured data for a large data-related system is still a hard nut to crack, especially in the multi-disciplined virtual experiment platform (MDVEP), where lots of unstructured data are produced, small in size and coming from various applications. This paper presents a new storage system named VESS for unstructured data from MDVEP, which can improve the performance of the system and simplify the development of upper-layer applications. It provides HTTP-based data request method as system user-friendly interface. Index table relying on a universal metadata file is used to ensure the consistency and integrity of replicas. Message queue is adopted to sequence modification operations and guarantee consistency, while signature-based authentication guarantees the security. Experimental results show that VESS can serve as a data storage service for virtual experiment with high performance. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Virtualization as a powerful and convenient technique has been widely used recently. Inserting the VMM between the hardware and operation system enables multiple virtual machines simultaneously running on hardware. However, these changes in system architecture, while improving the whole physical computing resources' utilization, also pay a certain price for virtualization. How to measure this part of CPU overhead, and how about the relationship between this part of CPU overhead and virtual machine number and the type of workload executing in virtual machine are two important questions to the further research of virtualization performance. In this paper we provide a system to measure the overhead of virtualization. With this system we could dynamically obtain the utilization of computing resource. Based on the analysis to the results of several experiments, we compare and study the relationship between the different factors and the overhead of virtualization. Finally, we predict the probably trend of the overhead under the impact of some factors. © 2011 IEEE.

Mobile devices such as PDAs and cellphones, limited to its' computing and storage capability, are not capable to run ordinary PC applications. But virtualization technology gives us another choice: the software can run on a server (generally in a virtual machine) and the user interface is transmitted to the client. We have developed MoClouDesk, a virtualized desktop architecture for mobile devices, which provides a real virtual working environment. MoClouDesk virtualizes the desktop by forming a desktop environment, similar to local desktop, while all the applications are running on the virtual machine of remote servers. Users can use different applications from cross-platform operating systems, and use them just the same as local applications. Users could personally customize and update the applications list from the application templates library. This paper explores how to build a virtual desktop environment for mobile device. Experiments demonstrate and evaluate its efficiency and effectiveness. © 2011 IEEE.

Congestion in DTN is a prominent problem due to constrained resource, intermittent link and long propagation delay. Traditional congestion control mechanisms based on end-to-end feedback and rate control fail to work in such network environments. Considering the characteristics of DTN, we propose a new contact-based congestion avoidance mechanism (C2AM). The contact history and queuing information are both exploited to obtain the average sojourn time of each incoming message. Using this metric, we try to deter incoming messages with long sojourn time and large size. Motivated by Little's law, we introduce the average storage cost of each message. To our best knowledge, this is the first case where contact information is used to assist congestion control in DTNs. Using simulation, we evaluate the C2AM mechanism and show that it can avoid and alleviate congestion in DTN greatly and improves network performance. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Exploits sequencing is a typical way by which an attacker breaks into a network. In such a scenario, each exploit lays as an atomic proposition for subsequent exploits. An attack path is seen as a succession of exploits which take an attacker right to his/her final goal. The set of all possible attack paths form an attack graph. Researchers have proposed a multitude of techniques to generate attack graph which grows exponentially in the size of the network. Hence it is preferable to optimize the choice of solutions which avoid the cost of scalab.lity and cumbersome. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive approach to network vulnerability analysis by ranking access Petri net graph and utilizing a penetration tester's perspective of maximal level of access possible on a host. Our approach has the following benefits: it provides a simple model in which an analyst can work, its algorithmic complexity is polynomial in the size of the network, and has the ability of scaling well to large size networks. Nevertheless, it has some drawback as in place of all possible attack paths, we seek only good attack paths. An analyst may make suboptimal choices when repairing the network. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper reports findings from a study of electrical load profiles obtained from a survey of a representative cross section of approximately 4,000 Irish dwellings. Electricity demand was recorded at half-hourly intervals for each dwelling over a six month period from 1st July 2009 to 31st December 2009. Descriptive statistics are shown for each electrical parameter such as mean, maximum demand, load factor and time of use (ToU) of electricity consumption. The mean power demand and daily mean load factor of the sample was 0.512kW and 23.43% respectively for all dwellings over the monitoring period. A mean daily maximum demand of 2.5kW was recorded for the sample. The most frequent ToU for maximum and minimum electricity consumption over the monitoring period was 18:0018:30 and 06:3007:00 respectively. © 2011 IEEE.

Text-based image search engine and content-based image retrieval (CBIR) have achieved much progress in commerce and academic community. In addition, a few attempts have been conducted to integrate the two techniques for image retrieval in web context. However, it is very difficult for general search engine based on image context to return highly accurate results. Compound face image retrieval system, based on a novel vertical web image retrieval framework, is designed to make comprehensive uses of text, image content and some related technologies in face detection and recognition. It incorporates high-level semantics and lowlevel visual features of web image and provides more accurate results and good extensibility for further applications. © 2011 IEEE.

Memory and I/O intensive applications always use a huge amount of memory and the performance decreases quickly when memory pressure arises. With the development of high performance network and widely used in cluster, the latency of remote memory access is much less than that of disk operation. In this paper, we present an approach to let the VM (Virtual Machine) use cluster-wide free memory, which can overcome the limitation of physical memory by exploiting low-latency access to the memory of other nodes in cluster. This approach can reduce the execution time for memory and I/O intensive applications significantly by utilizing cluster-wide memory and increase the whole cluster utilization. © 2011 IEEE.

In data centers and cloud computing environments, the number of virtual machines (VMs) increases when the number of service requests increases. Since services are invoked on demand, the corresponding virtual machines will be created and shut down frequently. This makes the time of starting a virtual machine a crucial performance bottleneck for services in data centers. Besides, if virtual machines read image files from disks to start themselves, additional overhead to access disk will be generated. In this paper, we present a cloud service cache system based on memory template of virtual machines - VCache to improve the response time of cloud computing services, and to reduce the disk access overhead. This system can create and maintain service cache VMs through memory templates, which are snapshots of running virtual machines. By creating virtual machines from cached image files, the ser-vice running in these VMs can be deployed rapidly, which greatly reduces the launching time of the service and disk I/O load. We evaluate our system with experiments, and the experimental results show that the average time for creating a VM is reduced about 80% and the amount of data through disk access decreases more than 50%. © 2011 IEEE.
