A virtual cluster consists of a multitude of virtual machines and software components that are doomed to fail eventually. In many environments, such failures can result in unanticipated, potentially devastating failure behavior and in service unavailab.lity. The ability of failover is essential to the virtual cluster's availab.lity, reliability, and manageability. Most of the existing methods have several common disadvantages: requiring modifications to the target processes or their OSes, which is usually error prone and sometimes impractical;only targeting at taking checkpoints of processes, not whole entire OS images, which limits the areas to be applied. In this paper we present VirtCFT, an innovative and practical system of fault tolerance for virtual cluster. VirtCFT is a system-level, coordinated distributed checkpointing fault tolerant system. It coordinates the distributed VMs to periodically reach the globally consistent state and take the checkpoint of the whole virtual cluster including states of CPU, memory, disk of each VM as well as the network communications. When faults occur, VirtCFT will automatically recover the entire virtual cluster to the correct state within a few seconds and keep it running. Superior to all the existing fault tolerance mechanisms, VirtCFT provides a simpler and totally transparent fault tolerant platform that allows existing, unmodified software and operating system (version unawareness) to be protected from the failure of the physical machine on which it runs. We have implemented this system based on the Xen virtualization platform. Our experiments with real-world benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness and correctness of VirtCFT. © 2010 IEEE.

When multiple instances of an application running on multiple virtual machines, an interesting problem is how to utilize the fault handling result from one application instance to heal the same fault occurred on other sibling instances, and hence to ensure high service availab.lity in a cloud computing environment. This paper presents SHelp, a lightweight runtime system that can survive software failures in the framework of virtual machines. It applies weighted rescue points and error virtualization techniques to effectively make applications bypass the faulty path. A two-level storage hierarchy is adopted in the rescue point database for applications running on different virtual machines to share error handling information to reduce the redundancy and to more effectively and quickly recover from future faults caused by the same bugs. A Linux prototype is implemented and evaluated using four web server applications that contain various types of bugs. Our experimental results show that SHelp can make server applications to recover from these bugs in just a few seconds with modest performance overhead. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper investigates event localization in wireless sensor networks. We improve the SNAP (Subtract on Negative Add on Positive) localization algorithm and propose the MSNAP (Modified Subtract on Negative Add on Positive) localization algorithm with higher localization accuracy and better performance of fault tolerance. First, every sensor node obverses the event signal and compares its observed reading with a threshold. If the reading is above the threshold, the node will send it to the sink station. Otherwise, it remains silent. Based on the observed readings which the nodes report, the sink station constructs the likelihood matrix by simply adding ± 1 contributions in the area around the nodes, whose maximum value points to the event location. Compared with the SNAP algorithm, when constructing the likelihood matrix, MSNAP dynamically adjusts the size of estimated region depending on the observed readings the nodes reported. Experimental results show that the algorithm effectively improves the localization accuracy and fault tolerance. © 2010 IEEE.

The performance evaluation of wireless sensor network based on passive monitoring restricted by two respects: first, passive monitoring trace is incomplete, because monitors can not capture every transmission in the network. Second, the information directly extracted from trace is insufficient. Performance evaluation always needs some implicit information, e.g., packet reception. To solving the problems above, we use two processing steps to construct an enhanced trace of network. First, an online merging procedure combines the incomplete traces of various monitors into a single more complete trace. Next, an inference procedure based on finite state machine reconstructs packets that were not captured by any monitor and determines whether a packet was received by its destination. Merging and inference procedure are realized in CTP Network which is incorporated with TinyOS. The evaluation is performed on simulation. The experiment results show that, if the trace contains more than 70% of the total packets, the engine can infer 20%-25% more loss packets and 90% packets' reception. © 2010 IEEE.

Problems of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) caused in the lab.ratory are predictable, and easy to resolve. While in the deployment and management phases, a number of factors in the environment raise more problems that are difficult to predict or simulation than in lab.ratory condition. To effective manage and monitor those problems, an effective management mechanism is needed, which analysis the problems and enables managers configure the networks and deal with exceptions. Wireless sensor networks are application-related systems, different scenarios the network structure and function are quite different. There is no uniform standard of network infrastructure design and implementation of communication protocols, which leading to the present there is no unified network management standards. In this paper, we developed a wireless sensor network visualization management system based on the ZigBee technique, which has data management, data changes and topology visualizing, offline analysis, and the initial network fault detection functions. ©2010 IEEE.

Growth Codes (GC) enhances the data persistence in dense sensor networks. However, GC exchanges data with neighbors in a completely random way, which may lead to uneven sensor data distribution in sparse sensor network. This significantly reduces the efficiency of GC data acquisition and fault-tolerance in sparse sensor network with less connectivity. In this paper, we propose Regulative Growth Codes (RGC) which use a random sequencing policy in data exchange operation instead of the completely random policy used in GC, and introduce the self-detection mechanism to reduce the redundant exchange. Simulation results show that the performance of RGC is better than GC in sparse sensor networks. © 2010 IEEE.

With the popularity of virtualization, the problem that how to manage hundreds even thousands of virtual machines running on multiple physical computing nodes becomes important. Current virtual machine management systems only can obtain basic information of virtual machines and execute simple operations on them, such as start, reboot and shutdown. In this paper, we design a virtual machine management approach based on agent service. Agent service can provide detail running status information inside virtual machines. It also has been a bridge for host machines and virtual machines to interact with each other. Agent service is designed to automatically start when virtual machine boots up. By agent service we can get real-time information about virtual machines. We evaluate monitoring overhead and the performance of batch operations when using agent. The experimental results show that agent mechanism outperforms methods using Libvirt or VMware tools. © 2010 IEEE.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) on-demand streaming systems inevitably suffer from peers churn that is the inherent dynamic characteristic of overlay network. With frequent peer departure, a large amount of media data cached on peer disk turns offline and unavailab.e, which becomes the major reason of heavy server load. To address the above issue, a new proactive data replication mechanism is proposed and implemented in existing P2P on-demand system GirdCast. Based on the new mechanism, peer can proactively replicate data chunks to stable cache servers for future sharing, when it has high possibility to leave the overlay. Two key heuristic algorithms are designed for departure prediction and replicated chunks selection. System trace driven simulation shows that the mechanism greatly decreases bandwidth load of media source server and improves the availab.lity of chunks highly demanded but poorly provisioned by overlay peers. © 2010 IEEE.
