Modern GPUs have been widely used to accelerate the graph processing for complicated computational problems regarding graph theory. Many parallel graph algorithms adopt the asynchronous computing model to accelerate the iterative convergence. Unfortunately, the consistent asynchronous computing requires locking or the atomic operations, leading to significant penalties/overheads when implemented on GPUs. To this end, coloring algorithm is adopted to separate the vertices with potential updating conflicts, guaranteeing the consistency/correctness of the parallel processing. We propose a light-weight asynchronous processing framework called Frog with a hybrid coloring model. We find that majority of vertices (about 80%) are colored with only a few colors, such that they can be read and updated in a very high degree of parallelism without violating the sequential consistency. Accordingly, our solution will separate the processing of the vertices based on the distribution of colors.

Datacenter demand response is envisioned as a promising approach for mitigating operational instability faced by smart grids. It enables significant potentials in peak load shedding and facilitates the incorporation of distributed generation and intermittent energy sources. This work considers two key aspects towards realtime electricity pricing for eliciting demand response: (i) Two-way electricity flow between smart grids and large datacenters with hybrid green generation capabilities. (ii) The geo-distributed nature of large cloud systems, and hence the potential competition among smart grids that serve different datacenters of the cloud. We propose a pricing scheme tailored for geo-distributed green datacenters, from a multi-leader single-follower game point of view. At the cloud side, in quest for performance, scalab.lity and robustness, the energy cost is minimized in a distributed manner, based on the technique of alternating direction of multipliers (ADMM). At the smart grid side, a practical equilibrium of the pricing game is desired. To this end, we employ mathematical programming with equilibrium constraints (MPEC), equilibrium problem with equilibrium constraints (EPEC) and exact linearization, to transform the multi-leader single-follower pricing game into a mixed integer linear program (MILP) that can be readily solved. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions is evaluated based on trace-driven simulations. © Copyright 2015 ACM.

Establishing the abundance and physical properties of regolith and boulders on asteroids is crucial for understanding the formation and degradation mechanisms at work on their surfaces. Using images and thermal data from NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft, we show that asteroid (101955) Bennu's surface is globally rough, dense with boulders, and low in albedo. The number of boulders is surprising given Bennu's moderate thermal inertia, suggesting that simple models linking thermal inertia to particle size do not adequately capture the complexity relating these properties. At the same time, we find evidence for a wide range of particle sizes with distinct albedo characteristics. Our findings imply that ages of Bennu's surface particles span from the disruption of the asteroid's parent body (boulders) to recent in situ production (micrometre-scale particles).

Unraveling the mechanisms underlying the maintenance of species diversity is a central pursuit in ecology. It has been hypothesized that ectomycorrhizal (EcM) in contrast to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can reduce tree species diversity in local communities, which remains to be tested at the global scale. To address this gap, we analyzed global forest inventory data and revealed that the relationship between tree species richness and EcM tree proportion varied along environmental gradients. Specifically, the relationship is more negative at low latitudes and in moist conditions but is unimodal at high latitudes and in arid conditions. The negative association of EcM tree proportion on species diversity at low latitudes and in humid conditions is likely due to more negative plant-soil microbial interactions in these regions. These findings extend our knowledge on the mechanisms shaping global patterns in plant species diversity from a belowground view.

Huge amount of entities and theirs relationships are posted on the Web. Those entities and theirs relationship networks help many activities. In this paper, we focus on the task of extracting academic entity network from homepages. Homepages usually contain many entities, such as persons, conference/journal and organization and theirs relationship. However, homepages don't follow a unified layout format and often contains similar information, but differs greatly in layouts and styles, which makes it impossible to use a unified set of rules to handle them all. Thus we propose an integrated approach to automatically extract data from unstructured texts. The main idea of the approach is to adopt the most suitable approach to extract entities. Thus, the approach is self-adaptive. Firstly, the approach decomposes web pages into text units and then classifier is used to determine units' type. Once the units' types are known, the different technologies are chosen to deal with them. For example, edit distance and inverted index are used to identify names etc. And Conditional Random Field technology is considered the best solution to extract publication entries. The result shows that LineX has achieved high performance on extracting entities from web pages in academic community.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). Multi-tenant service-based systems (SBSs) have become a major paradigm in software engineering in the cloud environment. Instead of serving a single end-user, a multitenant SBS provides multiple tenants with similar and yet customised functionalities with potentially different quality-of service (QoS) values. Thus, existing approaches to service selection for single-tenant SBSs are no longer suitable. Furthermore, the target multi-tenancy maturity level also needs to be considered in the service selection approach for an SBS. In this paper, we propose three novel QoS-aware service selection approaches for composing multi-tenant SBSs that achieve three different multi-tenancy maturity levels. Extensive and comprehensive experiments are conducted and the experimental results show that our approaches outperform the existing approach in both effectiveness and efficiency.

Key distribution is important to provide security guarantee for mobile services of Internet of Things (IoT). Traditional key distribution methods hardly provide single data server the promise to build multiple high-level secure real-time service channels simultaneously with high efficiency. In this paper we consider real-time data collecting or monitoring scenarios, which is commonly happened in health-care. In these scenarios, traditional key distribution approaches in public-key setting have difficulties on considering both security and efficiency during interactions. Besides, anonymity also shows importance during key distribution processes to keep personal privacy. In this paper we propose a secure real-time mobile service system and the corresponding security model, and novelly apply an Identity-Based Key Encapsulation Mechanism (IBKEM) in the proposed system as an instantiation that achieves one-pass anonymous key distribution in batch for mobile clients. The instantiated system shows both high-level security and efficiency in practice.

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).
