Internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling is a vital vitreoretinal surgery procedure. However, due to the thickness of just 1-2 micrometers and the intricacies associated with its varying density and adhesion, the difficulty of manipulation exceeds the physiological limits of human perception and operation. Surgical robot is characterized by high precision and stability. However, navigating intricate intraocular environments and handling minuscule high-precision areas remain enormous challenges. These include issues of uneven lighting, field-of-view loss, and motion blur. This paper proposed a perception method named ‘Multimodal Surgical Process Recognition based on Domain Knowledge and Segmentation (MSPR-DKS),’ designed to address these challenges and provide input for the precise control of robots. Moreover, a comprehensive dataset focused on ILM peeling during macular hole surgeries was established. Experimental results underscore the efficacy of this approach, with segmentation accuracies exceeding 99.27% for instruments and macular holes and an average accuracy of 98.97% in recognizing surgical processes. This study paves the way for leveraging domain knowledge and image segmentation to improve robot-assisted manipulation of soft tissues in ophthalmology.

This paper considers the problem of globally stabilizing a chain of integrators with actuator saturation in finite time. The proposed method is adapted from an existing scheduled low gain approach by relaxing the range of the value of the low gain parameter. Due to the special structure of the considered system, the proposed feedback law not only results in finite-time stability but also is homogeneous in the whole state space. The homogeneity of the proposed feedback law allows its implementation through the discretization of a compact set of the state space and thus obviation from numerical difficulties in the existing scheduled low gain design. A numerical example is presented to validate our theoretical results and demonstrate that our approach achieves faster convergence than the existing methods.

Image ordinal estimation is to predict the ordinal label of a given image, which can be categorized as an ordinal regression problem. Recent methods formulate an ordinal regression problem as a series of binary classification problems. Such methods cannot ensure that the global ordinal relationship is preserved since the relationships among different binary classifiers are neglected. We propose a novel ordinal regression approach, termed Convolutional Ordinal Regression Forest or CORF, for image ordinal estimation, which can integrate ordinal regression and differentiable decision trees with a convolutional neural network for obtaining precise and stable global ordinal relationships. The advantages of the proposed CORF are twofold. First, instead of learning a series of binary classifiers independently, the proposed method aims at learning an ordinal distribution for ordinal regression by optimizing those binary classifiers simultaneously. Second, the differentiable decision trees in the proposed CORF can be trained together with the ordinal distribution in an end-to-end manner. The effectiveness of the proposed CORF is verified on two image ordinal estimation tasks, i.e. facial age estimation and image aesthetic assessment, showing significant improvements and better stability over the state-of-the-art ordinal regression methods. Electrospinning has exhibited excellent benefits to treat the trauma for tissue engineering due to its produced micro/nano fibrous structure. It can effectively adhere to the tissue surface for long-term continuous therapy. This paper develops a robotic electrospinning platform for endoluminal therapy. The platform consists of a continuum manipulator, the electrospinning device, and the actuation unit. The continuum manipulator has two bending sections to facilitate the steering of the tip needle for a controllable spinning direction. Non-circular joint profile is carefully designed to enable a constant length of the centreline of a continuum manipulator for stable fluid transmission inside it. Experiments are performed on a bronchus phantom, and the steering ability and bending limitation in each direction are also investigated. The endoluminal electrospinning is also fulfilled by a trajectory following and points targeting experiments. The effective adhesive area of the produced fibre is also illustrated. The proposed robotic electrospinning shows its feasibility to precisely spread more therapeutic drug to construct fibrous structure for potential endoluminal treatments.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) constitutes an essential and promising paradigm that relies programmable wireless environment and provides capability for space-intensive communications, due to the use of low-cost massive reflecting elements over the entire surfaces of man-made structures. However, accurate channel estimation is a fundamental technical prerequisite to achieve the huge performance gains from RIS. By leveraging the low rank structure of RIS channels, three practical residual neural networks, named convolutional blind denoising network, convolutional denoising generative adversarial networks and multiple residual dense network, are proposed to obtain accurate channel state information, which can reflect the impact of different methods on the estimation performance. Simulation results reveal the evolution direction of these three methods and reveal their superior performance compared with existing benchmark schemes. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. In the intelligent transportation system, vehicle detection is one of the essential technologies in obstacle avoidance and navigation, however the existing vehicle detection methods cannot meet the actual needs. This paper presents a vehicle detection method combines the intensity and distance information of point cloud, which improves the segmentation performance of nearby objects. Specifically, the data of point cloud collected by lidar is preprocessed first. Then the processed point cloud is clustered by combining its coordinate and intensity information. Finally, the clustered suspected targets are fed to the random forest classifier. Our method can efficiently detect and classify targets in large-scale disordered 3D point cloud with high accuracy. In the real-scanned Livox Mid-40 Lidar dataset, our proposed method improves the detection accuracy by 31% compared with the traditional Euclidean clustering.

Chimera states are spatiotemporal patterns in which coherence and incoherence coexist. We observe the coexistence of synchronous (coherent) and desynchronous (incoherent) domains in a neuronal network. The network is composed of coupled adaptive exponential integrate-and-fire neurons that are connected by means of chemical synapses. In our neuronal network, the chimera states exhibit spatial structures both with spikes and bursts activities. Furthermore, those desynchronised domains not only have either spike or burst activity, but we show that the structures switch between spikes and bursts as the time evolves. Models of strategy evolution on static networks help us understand how population structure can promote the spread of traits like cooperation. One key mechanism is the formation of altruistic spatial clusters, where neighbors of a cooperative individual are likely to reciprocate, which protects prosocial traits from exploitation. But most real-world interactions are ephemeral and subject to exogenous restructuring, so that social networks change over time. Strategic behavior on dynamic networks is difficult to study, and much less is known about the resulting evolutionary dynamics. Here, we provide an analytical treatment of cooperation on dynamic networks, allowing for arbitrary spatial and temporal heterogeneity. We show that transitions among a large class of network structures can favor the spread of cooperation, even if each individual social network would inhibit cooperation when static. Furthermore, we show that spatial heterogeneity tends to inhibit cooperation, whereas temporal heterogeneity tends to promote it. Dynamic networks can have profound effects on the evolution of prosocial traits, even when individuals have no agency over network structures. © 2023, CC BY.
