X-ray excited shortwave infrared (X-SWIR) imaging attracts much attention because of its advantages in optical deep imaging. However, the X-ray used for X-SWIR imaging brings risk of radiation to organism. How to better realize the synergistic optimization of X-ray dose and luminous efficiency with proper X-ray excitations is especially important for further application. To indicate the effects of X-ray excitation voltage on the X-SWIR light efficiency, the paper builds up an evaluating method, considering the variation of both X-SWIR intensity and X-ray dose along with the X-ray excitation voltages. Based on the method, the X-SWIR intensity and X-ray dose with different X-ray voltages are tested. By calculating the X-SWIR luminescence intensity with unit absorption dose at different X-ray voltages, the influence of X-ray energy on luminous efficiency is revealed. Results show that the dose efficiency of the probe is related to the X-ray energy, and it is the highest under 30-40 kV X-ray excitation (average energy of 10-20 keV). The conclusion is that the proposed evaluating method is feasible for assessing the luminescence efficiency and providing a reference for the practical application of X-ray luminescent nanoprobes. It helps understanding the X-ray luminescence theory, optimizing the X-ray excitation, reducing the X-ray dose while maintaining the X-SWIR luminescence intensity, which is meaningful for practical application of X-SWIR imaging in vivo. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Multi-frequency magnetic induction tomography (mfMIT) is considered a promising technique for the early detection of intracranial hemorrhage. However, the lack of practical and stable algorithms has limited the use of mfMIT in clinical application research. In this study, we developed a dual-weighted frequency difference (DWFD) algorithm to address the limitations of the conventional weighted frequency difference method. This method does not require a priori information about the electrical conductivity of each tissue in the brain and only requires MIT measurements at three excitation frequencies to reconstruct an image of the hemorrhagic target. The performance of the proposed algorithm was verified using a three-dimensional head simulation model with an actual anatomical structure and comparing it with that of the conventional method. The results of the simulation experiments revealed that the DWFD algorithm can extract the hemorrhage tissue information and reconstruct low-noise images in a complex brain model with multiple tissue backgrounds. Through this method, the influence of non-homogeneous tissues in the head, which is observed in the conventional method, is eliminated;thus, the method can be used in further experiments. The DWFD method can facilitate the use of mfMIT in clinical studies for the rapid detection of intracranial hemorrhage. © VDE VERLAG GMBH.

The temperature characteristics of the conductivity of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are important in the fields of biological effect research, and electromagnetic protection of electromagnetic fields. In this study, the temperature control tank was used for temperature control (17-37 ℃), and the four/two electrode data integration method was used to measure its dielectric parameters (10 Hz-100 MHz). The results showed that the conductivity didn't not change significantly with frequency and the temperature coefficient of conductivity of cerebrospinal fluid remained basically unchanged in the whole frequency range, being 1.591-1.612%/℃. The temperature coefficient could lay a foundation for the calculation of brain specific absorption rate, the study of frequency and temperature dependence of brain dielectric properties. © Beijing Paike Culture Commu. Recent years have witnessed the great advance of bioradar system in smart sensing of vital signs (VS) for human healthcare monitoring. As an important part of VS sensing process, VS measurement aims to capture the chest wall micromotion induced by the human respiratory and cardiac activities. Unfortunately, the existing VS measurement methods using bioradar have encountered bottlenecks in making a tradeoff between time cost and measurement accuracy. To break this bottleneck, this letter proposes an efficient recursive technique (BERT) heuristically, based on the observation that the features of bioradar VS meet the conditions of Markov model. Extensive experimental results validate that BERT measurement yields lower time costs, competitive estimates of heart rate, breathing rate, and heart rate variability. Our BERT method is promising us a new and superior option to measure VS for bioradar. This work seeks not only to solve the current issue of how to accelerate VS measurement with an acceptable accuracy, but also to inspire creative new ideas that spur further advances in this promising field in the future. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Recursive techniques have demonstrated excellent computational efficiency in classic remote sensing tasks but are rarely applied in emerging remote sensing tasks in the IoT field, such as bioradar-based remote sensing of vital signs (VS). As a fundamental but important problem, VS sensing lacks an effective state model, making it difficult to implement using recursive techniques for a bioradar system. However, this paper presents an efficient recursive technique (BERT) that benefits remote VS sensing and accelerates computational speed with bioradar. Specifically, the recursive technique is derived from an efficient Markov state model based on the features of bioradar VS and is significantly helpful for algorithm implementation. This technique fills the recursive application gap in the VS sensing task and motivates further exploration of its rationale. Thanks to the strong capability of the recursive technique in computation, the proposed BERT requires less time and demonstrates greater accuracy compared to other methods in simulation results. We further conduct extensive experiments on two real datasets — one comprising 50 children and the other involving 30 adults across various scenarios, and the results show that the BERT algorithm significantly accelerates computation speed, reducing processing time by nearly 41% compared to the state-of-the-art algorithm, while maintaining superior estimation accuracy. Furthermore, this work also offers a fresh perspective on interpreting remote VS sensing for bioradar. © 2014 IEEE.

Modulation of brain complexity in schizophrenia patients with auditory verbal hallucinations by low-frequency rTMS stimulation

Background: Entropy is a critical measure for assessing the complexity and irregularity of brain signals. Understanding how brain entropy can be influenced by non-invasive neurostimulation in psychiatric patients remains a clinically relevant issue. Objective: This study aims to explore whether low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can modulate brain entropy in schizophrenia patient with auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH). Methods: A case-control design was employed in this study. Low-frequency (1 Hz) rTMS targeting at left temporoparietal junction was administered to schizophrenia patients with AVH. Brain entropy (sample entropy) was calculated from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. Comparisons of sample entropy were made between the schizophrenia patients and healthy controls, as well as within the patient group pre- and post-rTMS. Results: Following rTMS treatment, patients showed a reduction in clinical symptoms, including positive symptoms and AVH. Neurocognitive improvements were also observed in domains such as verbal and visual memory. Furthermore, patients exhibited increased sample entropy in regions including the prefrontal cortices and temporal lobes compared to healthy controls. However, this elevated entropy was reduced post-rTMS, particularly in areas associated with AVH. The language network and default model network, initially showing high mean sample entropy, demonstrated a significant decrease after rTMS treatment. These changes in brain entropy were correlated with clinical improvements. Conclusion: This modulation of neural activity complexity induced by the low-frequency rTMS may underlie the observed clinical and cognitive improvement in schizophrenia. © 2025 International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology
