Backward inference in Bayesian networks for distributed systems management

The growing complexity of distributed systems in terms of hardware components, operating system, communication and application software and the huge amount of dependencies among them have caused an increase in demand for distributed management systems. An efficient distributed management system needs to work effectively even in face of incomplete management information, uncertain situations, and dynamic changes. In this paper, Bayesian networks are proposed to model dependencies between managed objects in distributed systems. The strongest dependency route (SDR) algorithm is developed for backward inference in Bayesian networks. The SDR algorithm can track the strongest causes and trace the strongest routes between particular effects and its causes, the strongest dependency of causes can be also achieved by the algorithm. Thus, the backward inference provides an efficient mechanism in fault locating, and is beneficial for performance management. © 2005 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

The grid and Web service are converging as the WSRF is proposed. The grid not only provides the computing and resources sharing pools, but also supports the electronic business and enterprise applications integration with the composition of grid service. The paper presents a novel semantic composition method and adaptive scheduling algorithm based on grid workflow, which can benefit from the workflow architecture in the composition, visualization, verification, scheduling, execution and monitoring. The method can address semantic issues and automate the composition of grid service, and the algorithm can improve scheduling efficiency when the composite grid service is executed in the grid environment. According to the simulation experiment on the prototype implemented on the GT3, the composition and scheduling have the advantage of efficiency and effectiveness.

Recently, virtual heritage has emerged as a promising technology for conservation, preservation, and interpretation of our culture and natural history. We implemented a virtual heritage system with real data acquisition and a MPEG-21 based graphics adaptation architecture for transmitting adapted 3D contents to multiple target devices. Our system consists of 3D modeling tools, 3D content authoring tools, 3D database system and 3D graphics adaptation system. In this paper, we provide a overview of our system, including our approach in 3D modeling, a web-based interactive presentation over network and proposed a graphics adaptation system within MPEG-21 framework for transmitting adapted 3D contents to multiple target devices with different user preferences. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

The scheduling policy and algorithm of grid workflow determine the effectiveness and efficiency of grid workflow tasks, which is the key technology in grid workflow. Based on the definition of grid workflow tasks dynamic ready queue, critical factor, dynamic factor and prior factor, the grid workflow tasks selection algorithm, resource selection algorithm and tasks allocation algorithm are presented, which constitute the workflow dynamic scheduling with multiple polices. It can handle the dynamism of grid resource. Some simulation experiments on the prototype are implemented and analyzed, which show that the algorithm has the advantage of efficiency and practice. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

A GUI software development system for digital AV applications

The scale of software on digital AV appliances that handle large-volume multichannel digital data has been increased by the GUIs (graphical user interfaces) loaded on them in recent years. In addition, the GUIs of AV appliances use remote controls having cursor keys. Focus management must be performed by these to point to the object of operation, in contrast to the mouse, which is capable of pointing on the entire screen. Since focus management changes with changes in the specifications of GUIs, such as screen layouts and the like, software may not be reusable. In this paper, a development system that attempts to improve the productivity of GUI software requiring focus management is discussed from the points of view of (1) a software design model based on an object-oriented MVC model, (2) an execution model with good efficiency corresponding to the design model, (3) development tools performing synthesis of GUI software and automatic generation of focus management procedures, and (4) applications and evaluations of the system. In an example of the application of the system, software productivity with a GUI specification change was improved by a factor of three. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

In applications such as scientific and medical visualization, highly detailed polygonal meshes are needed. Rendering these polygonal meshes usually exceeds the capabilities of graphics hardware. To improve rendering efficiency and maintain proper interactivity, the polygonal mesh simplification technique is commonly used to reduce the number of polygons of the mesh and construct a multiresolution representation. We propose a new and simple constraint scheme based on the quadric error metric proposed by Garland and Heckbert (1997, 1998) to preserve face colors and boundary edges during the simplification process. In addition, our method generates progressive meshes that store the polygonal mesh in a continuous multi-resolution representation. According to our experimental results, this new method is successful in preserving face colors and boundary edges. Moreover, we compare the latency of resolution changes for progressive meshes of various models. © 2002 IEEE.

This paper presents the development of Thai text dependent speaker identification system by applying two feature-feeding approaches. A well-known multilayer perceptron (MLP) network with backpropagation learning algorithm is chosen. It has fast processing time and good performance for pattern recognition problems. But MLP has a limitation in that a network must have a fixed amount of input nodes. Therefore, the linear interpolation time normalization is chosen to adjust the input speech signal into a fixed size of input vector. Furthermore, the windowing technique is developed to avoid the distortion caused by a time normalization process. A fixed size window is sliced through the preprocessed features with fixed amount of overlapping frames. The high identification rate observed in experiments confirms that the developed windowing is suitable for the proposed Thai text-dependent speaker identification system.

This paper proposes a text-dependent speaker identification system applied to Thai language. Isolated digits 0-9 and their concatenations are used for speaking text. Linear prediction coefficients (LPC) are extracted and formed as feature vectors represented each speech signal. Dynamic time warping (DTW) is used to measure distances between referenced and evaluated vectors. These distances, indicating nearness of unknown vectors to references, incorporated with the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) decision technique are used to decide who possesses those unknown vectors. The experimental results have shown that the best identification rate for a single digit is 95.83% and the highest rate for concatenated digits of top-3, top-5, and top-7 are 98.75%, 100%, and 99.20%, respectively. © 1999 IEEE.
