Objective: To identify and quantify risk factors for incident knee osteoarthritis (KOA) across the lifespan. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis identified eligible studies from seven electronic databases and three registries. Longitudinal cohort studies or randomised controlled trials evaluating participants who developed incident symptomatic and/or radiographic KOA were included. Two independent reviewers completed data screening and extraction. Estimates were pooled using a random effects model and reported as odds ratio (OR), hazard ratio, or risk ratio and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, development and Evaluation was used to determine the certainty of evidence. Population attributable fractions were calculated, including risk factors significantly associated with radiographic KOA based on the pooled meta-analysis and where we could determine communality scores using existing clinical datasets. Results: We identified 131 studies evaluating > 150 risk factors. Previous knee injury, older age and high bone mineral density were associated with an increased risk of incident radiographic KOA based on the pooled analysis [OR (95% CI): 2.67 (1.41, 5.05), 1.15 (1.00, 1.33) and 1.82 (1.12, 2.94), respectively], with moderate-to-high certainty. Two risk factors (overweight/obesity and previous knee injury) accounted for 14% of incident radiographic KOA. Other modifiable risk factors, including occupational physical activity, also contribute to radiographic or symptomatic KOA. Conclusion: Novel strategies addressing known modifiable risk factors including overweight/obesity, knee injuries and occupational physical activity are needed to reduce overall burden of KOA. The ratio of branching ratios of the W boson to muons and electrons, $$R^{\,\mu /e}_W={{\mathcal {B}}(W\rightarrow \mu \nu )}$$ / $${{\mathcal {B}}(W\rightarrow e\nu )}$$ , has been measured using $$140\,\text{ fb}^{-1}\,$$ of pp collision data at $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ $$\text {T}\text {e}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}$$ collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, probing the universality of lepton couplings. The ratio is obtained from measurements of the $$t\bar{t}$$ production cross-section in the ee, $$e\mu $$ and $$\mu \mu $$ dilepton final states. To reduce systematic uncertainties, it is normalised by the square root of the corresponding ratio $$R^{\,\mu \mu /ee}_Z$$ for the Z boson measured in inclusive $$Z\rightarrow ee$$ and $$Z\rightarrow \mu \mu $$ events. By using the precise value of $$R^{\,\mu \mu /ee}_Z$$ determined from $$e^+e^-$$ colliders, the ratio $$R^{\,\mu /e}_W$$ is determined to be $$\begin{aligned} R^{\,\mu /e}_W&= 0.9995\pm 0.0022\,\mathrm {(stat)}\,\pm 0.0036\,\mathrm {(syst)}\\ &\quad \pm 0.0014\,\mathrm {(ext)} . \end{aligned}$$ The three uncertainties correspond to data statistics, experimental systematics and the external measurement of $$R^{\,\mu \mu /ee}_Z$$ , giving a total uncertainty of 0.0045, and confirming the Standard Model assumption of lepton flavour universality in W-boson decays at the 0.5% level.

Presented is the search for anomalous Higgs boson decays into two axion-like particles (ALPs) using the full Run 2 data set of $$140\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $$13\,\text {TeV}$$ recorded by the ATLAS experiment. The ALPs are assumed to decay into two photons, providing sensitivity to recently proposed models that could explain the $$(g-2)_\mu $$ discrepancy. This analysis covers an ALP mass range from 100 to $$62\,\text {GeV}$$ and ALP-photon couplings in the range $$10^{-7}\,\text {TeV}^{-1}

A search for leptoquark pair production decaying into $$te^- \bar{t}e^+$$ or $$t\mu ^- \bar{t}\mu ^+$$ in final states with multiple leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13~\text {TeV} $$ recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb $$^{-1}$$ . Four signal regions, with the requirement of at least three light leptons (electron or muon) and at least two jets out of which at least one jet is identified as coming from a b-hadron, are considered based on the number of leptons of a given flavour. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No excess above the Standard Model background prediction is observed and 95% confidence level limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are derived as a function of the leptoquark mass. Under the assumption of exclusive decays into $$te^{-}$$ ( $$t\mu ^{-}$$ ), the corresponding lower limit on the scalar mixed-generation leptoquark mass $$m_{\textrm{LQ}_{\textrm{mix}}^{\textrm{d}}}$$ is at 1.58 (1.59) TeV and on the vector leptoquark mass $$m_{{\tilde{U}}_1}$$ at 1.67 (1.67) TeV in the minimal coupling scenario and at 1.95 (1.95) TeV in the Yang–Mills scenario.

A search for pair production of vector-like leptons coupling to first- and second-generation Standard Model leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. Events are categorised depending on the flavour and multiplicity of leptons (electrons or muons), as well as on the scores of a deep neural network targeting particular signal topologies according to the decay modes of the vector-like leptons. In each of the signal regions, the scalar sum of the transverse momentum of the leptons and the missing transverse momentum is analysed. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No significant excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed and limits are set at 95% confidence level on the production cross-sections of vector-like electrons and muons as a function of the vector-like lepton mass, separately for SU(2) doublet and singlet scenarios. The resulting mass lower limits are 1220 GeV (1270 GeV) and 320 GeV (400 GeV) for vector-like electrons (muons) in the doublet and singlet scenarios, respectively.

The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has a broad physics programme ranging from precision measurements to direct searches for new particles and new interactions, requiring ever larger and ever more accurate datasets of simulated Monte Carlo events. Detector simulation with Geant4 is accurate but requires significant CPU resources. Over the past decade, ATLAS has developed and utilized tools that replace the most CPU-intensive component of the simulation—the calorimeter shower simulation—with faster simulation methods. Here, AtlFast3, the next generation of high-accuracy fast simulation in ATLAS, is introduced. AtlFast3 combines parameterized approaches with machine-learning techniques and is deployed to meet current and future computing challenges, and simulation needs of the ATLAS experiment. With highly accurate performance and significantly improved modelling of substructure within jets, AtlFast3 can simulate large numbers of events for a wide range of physics processes. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The accurate simulation of additional interactions at the ATLAS experiment for the analysis of proton–proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider presents a significant challenge to the computing resources. During the LHC Run 2 (2015–2018), there were up to 70 inelastic interactions per bunch crossing, which need to be accounted for in Monte Carlo (MC) production. In this document, a new method to account for these additional interactions in the simulation chain is described. Instead of sampling the inelastic interactions and adding their energy deposits to a hard-scatter interaction one-by-one, the inelastic interactions are presampled, independent of the hard scatter, and stored as combined events. Consequently, for each hard-scatter interaction, only one such presampled event needs to be added as part of the simulation chain. For the Run 2 simulation chain, with an average of 35 interactions per bunch crossing, this new method provides a substantial reduction in MC production CPU needs of around 20%, while reproducing the properties of the reconstructed quantities relevant for physics analyses with good accuracy. © 2022, The Author(s).

A search for exotic decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson into a pair of new spin-0 particles, H → aa, where one decays into a photon pair and the other into a τ-lepton pair, is presented. Hadronic decays of the τ-leptons are considered and reconstructed using a dedicated tagger for collimated τ-lepton pairs. The search uses 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV recorded between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The search is performed in the mass range of the a boson between 10 GeV and 60 GeV. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model background expectation. Model-independent upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to the γγττ final state, $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (H → aa → γγττ), ranging from 0.2% to 2%, depending on the a-boson mass hypothesis.

The inclusive Higgs boson production cross-section is measured in the di-photon and the $$ZZ^* \rightarrow 4 \ell $$ decay channels using 31.4 and 29.0 fb $$^{-1}$$ of pp collision data respectively, collected with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s}=13.6$$ $$\text {TeV}$$ . To reduce the model dependence, the measurement in each channel is restricted to a particle-level phase space that closely matches the channel’s detector-level kinematic selection, and it is corrected for detector effects. These measured fiducial cross-sections are $$\sigma _{\textrm{fid},\gamma \gamma } = $$ $$76^{+14}_{-13}$$ fb, and $$\sigma _{\textrm{fid},4 \ell } =$$ $$2.80\, \pm \, 0.74$$ fb, in agreement with the corresponding Standard Model predictions of $$67.6 \pm 3.7 $$ fb and $$3.67 \pm 0.19 $$ fb. Assuming Standard Model acceptances and branching fractions for the two channels, the fiducial measurements are extrapolated to the full phase space yielding total cross-sections of $$\sigma (pp \rightarrow H) = 67^{+12}_{-11}$$ pb and $$46 \pm 12$$ pb at 13.6 $$\text {TeV}$$ from the di-photon and $$ZZ^* \rightarrow 4 \ell $$ measurements respectively. The two measurements are combined into a total cross-section measurement of $$\sigma (pp \rightarrow H)= 58.2 \pm 8.7$$ pb, to be compared with the Standard Model prediction of $$\sigma (pp \rightarrow H)_\textrm{SM} = 59.9 \pm 2.6 $$ pb.
