Uncertainty-aware scheduling of real-time workflows under deadline constraints on multi-cloud systems

The elasticity and pay-as-you-go features of cloud computing are popular with customers, and more and more workflow applications are migrating to cloud platforms. Many workflow scheduling algorithms aim to obtain minimal rental costs. However, most of the existing research assumes that task execution time is deterministic. In fact, due to the performance fluctuations of VMs, the task execution time is uncertain before scheduling. Furthermore, many works ignore the cost savings given by multi-cloud systems. To this end, this paper provides a scheduling framework for real-time workflows. The framework includes four main components: the workflow analyzer, task pool, task allocation controller, and resource manager. Then based on the framework, we propose the RWSMC heuristic algorithm. The algorithm's goal is to minimize the total rental cost while satisfying the deadline constraints and ensuring the reliability of task execution. The RWSMC algorithm reduces the cost by selecting the appropriate billing mechanism based on the task's execution time and mitigates the impact of uncertain execution time by scheduling the task to the VM with the shortest predicted start time. Simulation experiments demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms three recent state-of-the-art scheduling algorithms in the total rental cost, deadline violation rate, and VM resource utilization.

As C program compilers do not check the array bounds during compiling, array index out of bounds attacks cause serious security problems. Array bound checking is becoming more and more important, however, original array bound checking, which needs programmers manual working, wastes too much time. In this paper, we propose a strategy to address this issue for C code. In this strategy, we use predicate abstraction in the generated CFG ( control flow graph), then the CFG is translated to the SMV model using a translating algorithm. Finally, we use the model checking tool-nuXmv to check the array bound. If the array is out of bound, the nuXmv will give the counter-examples.

Web application developers have been bothered about cross-browser compatibility problems caused by different kinds of web browsers. Existing techniques and tools commonly compare and analyze screenshots of websites rendering in different browsers. In this paper, we propose a technique for statically analyzing cross-browser compatibility problems. Our approach can easily detect whether web applications contain HTML5 incompatible features and generate a report containing the HTML5 incompatible features in the website for developers.

In the cloud testing environment, the virtual machine is a large scale of the testing resources. Users usually require its operation stability, and would not like to see the phenomenon of frequent migration of virtual machines during the test. Therefore, how to implement the optimized deployment of virtual machine effectively is a very important aspect of the cloud platform. This paper presents an optimized deployment scheme of virtual machines based on the individual testing requirements of users, which can select an optimum host to deploy the virtual machines for testing. This scheme can use resources scientifically and rationally, reduce the frequency of migration of virtual machines and obtain a better users' experience.

The suspension system is one of the key components of the city rail train, whose status is directly related to the comfort, reliability, and security of the train. Urban rail train suspension system generally uses passive detection;the detection is achieved mainly by artificial periodic inspection, which wastes manpower, material, and financial resources. This paper uses the PLS (partial least squares) algorithm to perform the fault detection experiment of suspension system of urban rail vehicle under track irregularity. Under the effect of track irregularity, the experiment of suspension system of urban rail vehicle is carried out using the D-S (Dempster-Shafer) evidence theory. The research results show that the PLS algorithm can be used for fault detection in transit and fault warning, to ensure driving safety. D-S evidence theory can completely separate the fault component type.

Database has been widely used in Web applications and database interactions influence the navigations of Web applications. Besides, database interactions are among the most essential functional features in current Web applications. In this paper, special care is taken on database interactions in modeling and testing Web applications. GFSMs (Guarded Finite State Machines), which are augmented FSMs are employed as a tool to model database interactions. A GFSM-TT(GFSM test-tree) is constructed from GFSM From the test-tree, minimal test set is derived to be employed to generate test. Finally, an algorithm is designed to optimize the test paths by decreasing the overlap. The approach we proposed can yield substantial results with test paths and state transitions are all less.

The rapid developing of digital content industry calls for online model libraries. For the efficiency, user experience, and reliability merits of the model library, this paper designs a Web 3D model library system based on a cloud computing platform. Taking into account complex models, which cause difficulties in real-time 3D interaction, we adopt the model simplification and size adaptive adjustment methods to make the system with more efficient interaction. Meanwhile, a cloud-based architecture is developed to ensure the reliability and scalability of the system. The 3D model library system is intended to be accessible by online users with good interactive experiences. The feasibility of the solution has been tested by experiments.

Adaptive edge service deployment in burst load scenarios using deep reinforcement learning

The development of edge computing provides a novel deployment strategy for delay-aware applications, in which applications initially deployed in central servers are shifted closer to end-users for higher-quality and lower-delay services. However, with the growth in the number of end-users and devices, edge services are increasingly susceptible to sudden load spikes. In burst load scenarios, deploying services and allocating resources to maintain service quality and load balancing of edge servers become challenging, particularly given the coupling of resource requirements between services. This paper addresses this challenge by modeling the load burst scenario as a Markov decision problem and proposing a deep reinforcement learning-based (DRL-based) approach. The proposed approach ranks services based on their migration status and request delay violations, and makes scaling and migration decisions for each service in turn, with the goal of maximizing the total request throughput while satisfying delay requirements and resource constraints. Simulation results show that the proposed approach outperforms other algorithms in terms of total throughput and delay violation rate.

Energy and time efficient task offloading and resource allocation on the generic IoT-fog-cloud architecture

With the exponential increase in the number of IoT devices and the amount of emitted data from these devices, it is expensive and inefficient to offload all tasks to the remote data center. How to optimize the energy consumption of application requests from IoT devices meeting the deadline constraint is also a challenge. Fog computing adjacent to users has the feature of lower service delay but less resource than the remote cloud. Fog does not appear to replace cloud, they are complementary to each other, cooperation between them is worth studying. This paper proposes a general IoT-fog-cloud architecture that fully exploits the advantages of fog and cloud. Then, the energy and time efficient computation offloading and resource allocation is formulated into the energy and time cost minimization problem. We then propose an ETCORA algorithm to solve the problem, improving the energy consumption and completion time of application requests. Finally, extensive simulations are carried out to verify that the proposed method indeed outperforms the other two methods in reducing energy consumption and completion time of requests.

A Parallel Framework of Combining Satisfiability Modulo Theory with Indicator-Based Evolutionary Algorithm for Configuring Large and Real software Product Lines

Multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) has been widely applied to software product lines (SPLs) for addressing the configuration optimization problems. For example, the state-ofthe-art SMTIBEA algorithm extends the constraint expressiveness and supports richer constraints to better address these problems. However, it just works better than the competitor for four out of five SPLs in five objectives and the convergence speed is not significantly increased for largest LINUX SPL from 5 to 30 min. To further improve the optimization efficiency, we propose a parallel framework SMTPORT, which combines four corresponding SMTIBEA variants and performs these variants by utilizing parallelization techniques within the limited time budget. For case studies in LVAT repository, we conduct a series of experiments on seven real-world and highly-constrained SPLs. Empirical results demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art for all the seven SPLs in terms of a quality Hypervolume metric and a diversity Pareto Front Size indicator.
