It is urgent to solve the contradiction between limited spectrum resources and the increasing demand from the ever-growing wireless networks. Spectrum redistribution is a powerful way to mitigate the situation of spectrum scarcity. In contrast to existing truthful mechanisms for spectrum redistribution which aim to maximize the spectrum utilization and social welfare, we propose DIARY in this paper, which not only achieves approximate revenue maximization, but also guarantees bid privacy via differential privacy. Extensive simulations show that DIARY has substantial competitive advantages over existing mechanisms.

We consider the crucial problem of maximizing the social welfare of a vehicular participatory sensing system which consists of mobile source vehicles that collect sensing data on the move and relay vehicles that forward sensing data to the central sensing platform. Three issues should be taken into consideration, i.e., sensing rate control, flow control and transmission, incentives for vehicles to participate. It is highly challenging to achieve the optimal social welfare, given the arbitrary unknown contact events and the dynamic network formed by mobile vehicles. To tackle the challenges, we propose a fully distributed optimal control algorithm DBC to maximize the social welfare while keeping good network stability. Exploiting the stochastic Lyapunov optimization technique, it derives an optimal control strategy for sensing rate control and flow control. Rigorous theoretical analysis shows the gap between the DBC and the optimum is only O(1/V), where V is a tradeoff parameter between social welfare and network stability. In addition, we have conducted extensive simulations based on real taxi GPS traces, and the results show the efficacy of DBC.

Concurrent programs are known to be difficult to test and maintain. These programs often fail because of concurrency bugs caused by non-deterministic interleavings among shared memory accesses. Even though a concurrency bug can be detected, it is still hard to isolate the root cause of the bug, due to the challenge in understanding the complex thread interleavings or schedules. In this paper, we propose a practical and precise isolation technique for concurrent bugs called Pinso that seeks to exploit the non-deterministic nature of concurrency bugs and accurately find the root causes of program error, to further help developers maintain concurrent programs. Pinso profiles runtime inter-thread interleavings based on a set of summarized memory access patterns, and then, isolates suspicious interleaving patterns in the triaging phase. Using a filtration-oriented scheduler, Pinso effectively eliminates false positives that are irrelevant to the bug. We evaluate Pinso with 11 real-world concurrency bugs, including single- and multi-variable violation, from sever/desktop concurrent applications (MySQL, Apache, and several others). Experiments indicate that our tool accurately isolates the root causes of all the bugs.

In order to identify new words in huge Chinese corpus efficiently, this paper comes up with an algorithm based on ensemble methods. At first we perform Chinese word segmenting with Trie and build segment-tree. Then we select words pattern drawing method, frequency filtering, independent word probability and naive Bayes model to be sub-models of ensemble methods and train them independently. At last we integrate results from different sub-models with a multi-layer model. In experiment, this algorithm is proved to be quite fast as well as product precise and high-coverage results. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Matrix factorization (MF) has become the most popular technique for recommender systems due to its promising performance. Recently, distributed (parallel) MF models have received much attention from researchers of big data community. In this paper, we propose a novel model, called distributed stochastic alternating direction methods of multipliers (DS-ADMM), for large-scale MF problems. DS-ADMM is a distributed stochastic variant of ADMM. In particular, we first devise a new data split strategy to make the distributed MF problem fit for the ADMM framework. Then, a stochastic ADMM scheme is designed for learning. Finally, we implement DS-ADMM based on message passing interface (MPI), which can run on clusters with multiple machines (nodes). Experiments on several data sets from recommendation applications show that our DS-ADMM model can outperform other state-of-the-art distributed MF models in terms of both efficiency and accuracy. Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). In this paper, we argue that by carefully considering spatial reusability of the wireless communication media, we can tremendously improve the end-to-end throughput in multi-hop wireless networks. To support our argument, we propose spatial reusability-aware single-path routing (SASR) and anypath routing (SAAR) protocols, and compare them with existing single-path routing and anypath routing protocols, respectively. Our evaluation results show that our protocols significantly improve the end-to-end throughput compared with existing protocols. Specifically, for single-path routing, the throughput gain is up to 2.9x;for anypath routing, the throughput gain is up to 62.7%.

The increasing algorithm complexity and dataset sizes necessitate the use of networked machines for many graph-parallel algorithms, which also makes fault tolerance a must due to the increasing scale of machines. Unfortunately, existing large-scale graph-parallel systems usually adopt a distributed checkpoint mechanism for fault tolerance, which incurs not only notable performance overhead but also lengthy recovery time. This paper observes that the vertex replicas created for distributed graph computation can be naturally extended for fast in-memory recovery of graph states. This paper proposes Imitator, a new fault tolerance mechanism, that supports cheaply maintenance of vertex states by replicating vertex states to their replicas during normal message exchanges, and provides fast in-memory reconstruction of failed vertices from replicas in other machines. Imitator has been implemented by extending Hama, a popular open-source clone of Pregel. Evaluation shows that Imitator incurs negligible performance overhead (less than 5% for all cases) and can recover from failures of more than one million of vertices with less than 3.4 seconds.

Flooding is one of the most fundamental functions in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and has been investigated extensively. Existing flooding schemes in duty-cycle WSNs can be categorized into two categories: synchronous ones and asynchronous ones. In practice asynchronous schemes are preferable since synchronous ones introduce more complexity and overhead for necessary clock synchronization. Existing asynchronous approaches are however imperfect for reliable flooding in duty-cycle WSNs. For example, opportunistic flooding is less flexible and Asynchronous Duty-cycle Broadcasting (ADB) suffers unsatisfactory flooding latency. We propose Constructive Interference-based Reliable Flooding (CIRF) in this paper, a novel design for reliable flooding in asynchronous duty-cycle WSNs. CIRF is integrated with the MAC protocol Receiver-Initiated MAC (RI-MAC) to improve the utilization of wireless medium and guarantee one-hop reliable transmission. The key idea of CIRF is to exploit the constructive interference feature when concurrent transmission occurs, which can be common in RI-MAC based WSNs. Simulation results indicate that CIRF achieves reliable flooding with reduced flooding latency, higher energy efficiency and delivery ratio compared to existing schemes.

Unveiling the Challenges in Improving Data Availability in Vehicular Networks with Network Codingin

Retrieving data from mobile source vehicles is a crucial routine operation for a wide spectrum of vehicular network applications, in- cluding road surface monitoring and sharing. Network coding has been widely exploited and is an effective technique for diffusing in- formation over a network. The use of network coding to improve data availability in vehicular networks is explored in this paper. With random linear network codes, simple replication is avoided, and instead, a node forwards a coded block that is a random combination of all data received by the node. We use a network-coding-based approach to improve data availability in vehicular networks. To deter- mine the feasibility of this approach, we conducted an empirical study with extensive simulations based on two real vehicular GPS traces, both of which contain records from thousands of vehicles over more than a year. We observed that, despite significant improve- ment in data availability, there is a serious issue with linear correlation between the received codes. This reduces the data-retrieval success rate. By analyzing the real vehicular traces, we discovered that there is a strong community structure within a real vehicular network. We verify that such a structure contributes to the issue of linear dependence. Then, we point out opportunities to improve the network-coding-based approach by developing community-aware code-distribution techniques.
