Recently, tag recommendation (TR) has become a very hot research topic in data mining and related areas. However, neither co-occurrence based methods which only use the item-tag matrix nor content based methods which only use the item content information can achieve satisfactory performance in real TR applications. Hence, how to effectively combine the item-tag matrix, item content information, and other auxiliary information into the same recommendation framework is the key challenge for TR. In this paper, we first adapt the collaborative topic regression (CTR) model, which has been successfully applied for article recommendation, to combine both item-tag matrix and item content information for TR. Furthermore, by extending CTR we propose a novel hierarchical Bayesian model, called CTR with social regularization (CTR-SR), to seamlessly integrate the item-tag matrix, item content information, and social networks between items into the same principled model. Experiments on real data demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed models.

Data center networks are becoming increasingly important for computing industry. By exploiting millimeter wavelength wireless technology (e.g., 60GHz), data centers are going to be more convenient for the interconnection of different components without complex wiring. 60GHz technique has been widely studied, and great progress has been achieved indeed. However, there are two significant challenges unsolved in 60GHz-based wireless data centers networks: link blockage and long network diameter. In this paper, we propose a new network topology, called Spherical Mesh, to improve the performance of wireless data center networks. Spherical Mesh can greatly mitigate link blockage by putting antennas at different heights, and decrease the network diameter by splitting the whole mesh into several equivalent units. Furthermore, we have implemented Spherical Mesh and evaluated its performance in different scenarios. Our evaluation results show that Spherical Mesh achieves minimal routing distance and guarantees the balance of workload. © 2014 IEEE.

Cloud computing provides an efficient way to expose computing capabilities as sophisticated services that can be accessed remotely. It eliminates the need for organizations to maintain extensive infrastructures. Parallel and distributed simulation over cloud will bring us not only the increased productivity and efficiency but also the lower barrier for usage. This paper introduces a private cloud system based on BOINC which supports parallel and distributed simulation. The design idea and implementation method of each component for our system is discussed in detail. © 2011 IEEE.

Camera sensors can collect visual information from regions of interest (RoI) and provide more information to classify the intruder. In practice, randomly deployed camera sensors can not guarantee that the barrier is full-view covered, and lead to a waste of sensing resources. Our work takes the first attempt to explore the deployment strategy to achieve full-view barrier coverage with rotatable camera sensors. We propose a method to select camera sensors from an existing and arbitrary deployment and determine their orientation to obtain a full-view barrier coverage. Our simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms existing algorithms for fixed directional camera sensors in saving the number of camera sensors. © 2014 IEEE.

In crowdsensing, appropriate rewards are always expected to compensate the participants for their consumptions of phys- ical resources and involvements of manual efforts. While continuous low quality sensing data could do harm to the availability and preciseness of crowdsensing based services, few existing incentive mechanisms have ever addressed the issue of sensing data's quality. The design of quality based incentive mechanism is motivated by its potential to avoid inefficient sensing and unnecessary rewards. In this paper, we incorporate the consideration of data quality into the de- sign of incentive mechanism for crowdsensing, and propose to pay the participants as how well they do, to motivate the rational participants to perform data sensing efficiently. This mechanism estimates the quality of sensing data, and offers each participant a reward based on her effective con- Tribution. We also implement the mechanism and evaluate the improvements in terms of quality of service and profit of service provider. The evaluation results show that our mechanism achieves superior performance when compared to the uniform pricing scheme. Copyright © 2015 ACM.

Auction is believed to be an effective way to solve or relieve the problem of radio spectrum shortage, by dynamically redistributing idle wireless channels of primary users to secondary users. However, to design a practical channel auction mechanism, we have to consider five challenges, including strategy-proofness, channel spatial reusability, channel heterogeneity, bid diversity, and social welfare maximization. Unfortunately, none of the existing works fully considered the five design challenges. In this paper, we present the first in-depth study on the problem of dynamic channel redistribution by jointly considering the five design challenges, and present SMASHER, which is a Strategy-proof coMbinatorial Auction mechaniSm for Heterogeneous channel Redistribution. Our analyses show that SMASHER achieves both strategy-proofness and approximately efficient social welfare. Copyright 2013 ACM.

Hashing, which tries to learn similarity-preserving binary codes for data representation, has been widely used for efficient nearest neighbor search in massive databases due to its fast query speed and low storage cost. Because it is NP hard to directly compute the best binary codes for a given data set, mainstream hashing methods typically adopt a two-stage strategy. In the first stage, several projected dimensions of real values are generated. Then in the second stage, the real values will be quantized into binary codes by thresholding. Currently, most existing methods use one single bit to quantize each projected dimension. One problem with this single-bit quantization (SBQ) is that the threshold typically lies in the region of the highest point density and consequently a lot of neighboring points close to the threshold will be hashed to totally different bits, which is unexpected according to the principle of hashing. In this paper, we propose a novel quantization strategy, called double-bit quantization (DBQ), to solve the problem of SBQ. The basic idea of DBQ is to quantize each projected dimension into double bits with adaptively learned thresholds. Extensive experiments on two real data sets show that our DBQ strategy can significantly outperform traditional SBQ strategy for hashing. Providing efficient multi-dimensional indexing is critically important to improve the overall performance of the cloud storage system. To achieve efficient querying service, the indexing scheme should guarantee lower routing cost and less false positive. In this paper, we propose RB-Index, a distributed multi-dimensional indexing scheme in modular data centers with Bcube topology. RB-Index is a two-layer indexing scheme, which integrates Bcube-based routing protocol and R-tree-based indexing technology. In its lower layer, each server in the network indexes the local data with R-tree, while in the upper layer the global index is distributed across different servers in the network. Based on the characteristics of Bcube, we build several indexing spaces and propose the way to map servers into the indexing spaces. The dimension of these indexing spaces are dynamically selected according to both the data distribution and the query habit. Index construction and query algorithms are also introduced. We simulate a three-level Bcube to evaluate the efficiency of our indexing scheme and compare the performance of RB-Index with RT-CAN, a similar design in P2P network. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

New developments in mobile computing, wireless networking and social networking leverage opportunities to create location-based social networks (LBSNs) such as Foursquare, Gowalla, Facebook Place. Pointof-interest (POI) recommendation is a significant task in LBSNs, since it provides recommendations that respect personal preferences and capture social and environmental parameters. Moreover, employing Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in POIs enables to improve recommendation accuracy. Most of existing POI recommendation methods deals with the only single domain, whereas the use of information available from other application domains potentially provides better POI recommendation results. This is particularly relevantforthenewlylaunchedLBSNs, wherelittlecheckin information is available. In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose a crossdomainPOIrecommendationmethodinLBSNsandapply transfer learning for this purpose. To this end, we first incorporate both user and POI knowledge in auxiliary domains by discovering the principle coordinates. Next, we transfer them to the target domain and then make predictions using the transferred knowledge. The experimental results demonstrate high performance of our method and the merits of cross-domain POI recommendation in LBSNs. © 2016 IEEE.

A tiered storage system uses replication method to provide both high reliability and availability, which stores three replicas over different nodes in the clusters. Erasure codes (EC) such as Reed-Solomon (RS) are increasingly utilized to further reduce the storage overhead while providing low I/O performance and availability. Existing solutions nowadays implement heterogeneous storage systems either using triple replication, erasure coding methods or a combination of both, although involves high performance gap between each data layer. To address this problem, in this paper, we introduce WarmCache, a new data layer for warm data by having one copy stored using erasure coding and the other copy in memory data layer. Using one copy in erasure coding data layer ensures data reliability, while the other copy in memory data layer provides fast I/O performance. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
