RKSeg+: make full use of Runge–Kutta methods in medical image segmentation

The dynamical system perspective has been used to build efficient image classification networks and semantic segmentation networks. Furthermore, the Runge–Kutta (RK) methods are powerful tools for building networks from the dynamical systems perspective. Hence, the Runge–Kutta segmentation network (RKSeg) for medical image segmentation was born. Skip connections and multiple scaling are often used in common models but lack mathematical explanations. RKSeg interprets and uses skip connections based on the RK methods. Therefore, RKSeg greatly improves segmentation efficiency. However, it does not explain and use multiple scales from a dynamical system perspective but only inherits the multi-scale scheme of existing models. We compensate for this shortcoming by interpreting and using multiple scales based on the RK methods. In addition, the network structure also limits the excellent image classification networks as the backbones of RKSegs. Therefore, we modify the network structure to support more image classification networks as backbones. As a result, we propose a novel network structure RKSeg+. Our proposed RKSeg+ achieves better segmentation results with fewer parameters than RKSeg. Furthermore, RKSeg+, well configured with few parameters, outperforms state-of-the-art models on six of the ten organ datasets in the Medical Segmentation Decathlon. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

In the context of escalating demands on wireless networks owing to the widespread application of 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), enhancing network performance and user experience through the convergence of Multi-access Edge computing (MEC) and Information-Centric networking (ICN) has become a critical research focus. This paper proposes a novel Energy-efficient Caching Algorithm (EeCA) based on Named Data networking (NDN), a specific implementation of ICN. This NDN-based caching strategy extends local caching in MEC networks and enhances the overall network performance by considering the multitude of repeated computational tasks and the residual energy of low-energy devices. The EeCA aims to reduce redundant offloading of tasks across the entire network, contributing to energy savings, and reducing overall system costs. Simulations reveal superior performance of EeCA compared to four other caching methods, specifically in terms of cache hit ratio and energy consumption, making it a promising solution for network performance enhancement and energy conservation in MEC networks.

Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPSs) have been motivating various Industry 4.0 endeavours, particularly with the integration of fog computing. Cloud-fog data caching paradigms, as supportive elements of ICPSs, have been adopted to cache user data, catering to diverse ICPS requirements such as data sensitivity and reduced access latency. In this hierarchical caching context, ensuring Cloud-Fog Data Integrity (CFDI) is crucial for maintaining the consistent functionality of ICPSs. Existing solutions primarily focus on examining the integrity of data cached solely on either cloud or fog nodes. However, cloud-cached data and fog-cached data are tightly coupled and should be considered simultaneously when checking data integrity. In this work, we introduce an over-the-air CFDI verification scheme, namely AirDIV, with a high accuracy and security guarantee. Instead of aggregating integrity proofs after proof transmission, AirDIV completes proof aggregation and transmission over the air for efficiency improvement. To enhance practicability, we derive adjustable parameters and formulate an optimization problem to minimize over-the-air aggregation errors. Furthermore, with an effective proof generation method, AirDIV can defend against two common attacks, i.e., replay and forge attacks. We provide a theoretical analysis of AirDIV's correctness, accuracy and security, while conducting extensive experiments on both simulated and real platforms to validate its efficiency. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

The "Social Internet of Things (SIoT)" is a combination of the Internet of Things (IoT) and social networks to form a new paradigm. The SIoT promotes the development of smart cities, smart transportation, and many other fields. In SIoT, the openness and mobility of objects are enhanced. However, this tends to lead to network data sparsity problems. By distinguishing explicit and implicit social relationships, we introduce an implicit social relationship-based trust management model (IRTM) for reliable service delivery in SIoT. IRTM establishes implicit social relationships among nodes by mining their latent characteristics and trust transitivity. It models SIoT by creating sub-networks for each social relationship as a way to fuse the impact of different types of social relationships on trust management. To address the problem of malicious attacks by malicious nodes in the network to protect their interests, it considers two metrics, node relationship strength, and recommendation reliability, to filter malicious recommendations. Experiments conducted in the presence of data sparsity and malicious objects show that IRTM can improve the accuracy and convergence of trust evaluation compared to other methods that ignore implicit social relationships when computing trust. Federated Learning (FL) is a distributed machine learning (ML) approach that enables multiple edge nodes to collaboratively train ML models by sharing model parameters, thus addressing privacy concerns. However, in highly distributed, dynamic, and volatile FL environments, the global model is vulnerable to various corruptions. For instance, edge nodes might falsely claim that the received global model is incomplete, or the channel that transmits the global model is untrustworthy. Effectively verifying the integrity of the global model poses a critical challenge. To tackle this issue, we introduce a method for verifying model integrity called Federated learning global Model Integrity Verification (FMIV). It leverages Merkle Hash Tree (MHT) to generate integrity proofs of the global model during verification. To improve security, we integrate random security codes during proof generation. FMIV is capable of verifying the global model updated by the central server and shared with untrusted edge nodes, while efficiently identifying the edge node caching the incomplete global model. Furthermore, we conduct theoretical analysis and extensive experiments to validate the performance of FMIV. Compared to the two state-of-the-art approaches, FMIV consistently exhibits a notable improvement in verification efficiency and effectiveness in detecting model corruption.

The social network-based recommendation model use social network information to mitigate data sparsity issues and improve the accuracy of recommendation models. However, In most social network-based recommendation algorithms, the social neighbors' contributions are difficult to distinguish from the central user's, neglecting hidden correlations in social infor-mation. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents a graph-based contrastive learning framework for social-enhanced recommendation (SoGCLR) that utilizes implicit social information captured by a new social relation attention mechanism, en-rich user representations, and improve model robustness through graph-based contrastive learning. Specifically, the paper captures the degree of contribution of each neighbor in the social graph to the central user through a social relation attention layer, thus obtaining hidden correlations in social information, and further integrates this with user information in the user-item interaction graph to enrich user representations. In addition, the paper incorporates graph-based contrastive learning into the recommendation task using cross-layer contrastive learning, calculating contrastive loss and mapping nodes with similar but different exposure rates to nearby regions to mitigate exposure bias issues. Results from Ciao and Epinions demonstrate that SoGCLR reduces RMSE and MAE by 1.33% to 1.84% compared with baseline models. © 2023 IEEE.

Detection of wood surface defects is one critical step in the plywood process. YOLO series detection models need to find a good tradeoff between detection speed and accuracy. Therefore, this paper improves the YOLOv8 model by replacing the backbone, neck, and head with the FasterNet, Enhanced Feature Pyramid network (EFPN), and Multi-Scale Feature Decoupling Head (MSDH), respectively. The FasterNet reduces the number of model parameters by using Partial Convolution (PConv). To remedy the accuracy loss caused by the FasterNet, the EFPN adds auxiliary branches to reduce information loss between different feature layers and uses Dilated Reparameter Modules (DRM) to extract more multi-scale features. Besides, the MSDH reorganizes the features on different scales to enhance their semantic relationships. Experimental results show that FasterNet reduces the number of parameters by 43%, the EFPN and the MSDH increase the mAP (mean Average Precison) by 2.2% and 1.4%, respectively, compared to the original Yolov8 model.

As the population ages, the precise assessment of pulmonary senescence becomes essential for the diagnosis and management of chronic respiratory diseases. However, existing medical imaging analysis techniques encounter significant chal-lenges due to data scarcity, especially in the domain of lung CT imaging. This research proposes an innovative method for assessing lung aging in CT images-T-M Net. This method combines transfer learning and MS-CNN to improve the accuracy and efficiency of lung aging assessment in CT images. We employed a pretrained ResNet18 model, capitalizing on transfer learning to harness the insights from extensive datasets, thereby minimizing the computational demands of model training. Furthermore, a channel attention mechanism is integrated within the transfer learning framework to heighten the model's focus on critical pulmonary regions, thus augmenting its predictive accuracy and interpretability. To accommodate the distinctive characteristics of lung CTs, a MS CNN architecture was developed, capturing multi-dimensional information ranging from microscopic details to macroscopic structures through variously sized convolutional kernels. Testing on a lung CT dataset revealed that our approach surpasses traditional methods in accuracy and generalizability, underscoring its potential utility in the early diagnosis and effective treatment of pulmonary ailments.

Laryngeal leukoplakia classification is challenging using white light endoscopy images. Relevant research focus on normal tissues versus non normal tissues, cancer versus non cancer classification. The objective of this paper is to classify laryngeal leukoplakia in white light endoscopy images into six classes: normal tissues, inflammatory keratosis, mild dysplasia, moderate dysplasia, severe dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma. We proposed a dense multiscale convolutional neural network including parallel multiscale convolution, dense convolution and recurrent convolution in favor of extracting dense multiscale features of laryngeal leukoplakia for fine classification. The proposed network achieved an overall accuracy of 0.8958 for the six-class classification. It has high sensitivity and specificity for each class which are, respectively, 1.0000 and 0.9394 for normal tissues, 0.6667 and 1.0000 for inflammatory keratosis, 0.8889 and 0.9744 for mild dysplasia and moderate dysplasia, 0.7500 and 1.0000 for severe dysplasia, 1.0000 and 0.9767 for squamous cell carcinoma. The experimental results show that our proposed model is superior to the state-of-the-art deep learning-based models.

Adaptive Interacting Multiple Model for Underwater Maneuvering Target Tracking with One-Step Randomly Delayed Measurements

The existing interacting multiple model (IMM) suffers from two problems when tracking an underwater maneuvering target: 1) the conventional nonlinear filters in IMM cannot work on the condition of delayed measurement, 2) the inefficiency of model switching in IMM may degrade the tracking performance. In order to handle the delayed measurement, an augmented state vector including target state and measurement noise is designed. Thus, under two Gaussian assumptions, the estimation of the target state can be divided into two steps: measurement noise filter and target state filter. Then, the new extended Klaman filter (EKF) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) with delayed measurement are implemented as two variations of the proposed filter. In addition, to solve the problem of low switching efficiency between IMM models, a transfer probability corrected function is designed to adaptively update the transfer probability matrix (TPM) in IMM. The improved TPM can make full use of the current and past model information. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing IMM-EKF and IMM-UKF. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
