Intelligent supply line surveillance is critical for modern smart grids (SGs). Smart sensors and gateway nodes are strategically deployed along supply lines to achieve intelligent surveillance. They collect data continuously and transmit it to the control centre in real-time. It enables real-time monitoring, fault detection, and efficient energy management across distribution networks. This advanced surveillance system ensures continuous monitoring of supply lines, detecting anomalies, and optimizing operations to maintain the stability and reliability of the SG. However, the reliance of all participating nodes on public communication channels to transmit supply line surveillance data exposes these systems to critical cyber attacks. These cyber attacks include impersonation, physical tampering, ephemeral secret leakage (ESL), and desynchronization attacks. To address these issues, existing key-exchange protocols often fail to ensure robust security while imposing high computation and communication overheads, limiting their practicality for resource-constrained environments. Therefore, we propose a secure and efficient key exchange and tamper-resistant authentication protocol using elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) and physical unclonable functions (PUFs). The PUF mechanism provides robust resistance against physical tampering and cloning attacks, ensuring enhanced physical security for supply line devices. We validate the security robustness of the devised protocol using the random or real (ROR) model. Furthermore, informal security analysis demonstrates the protocol’s robustness in rigorously resisting various attacks, including physical tampering, impersonation, ESL and desynchronization. Moreover, we determine the performance evaluation that reveals the protocol’s superior efficiency compared to competing protocols, achieving significant reductions of 28.64% in computation overhead and 9.96% in communication overhead. © 2014 IEEE.

Smart grids (SGs) rely on home area networks (HANs) and neighborhood area networks (NANs) to ensure efficient power distribution, real-time monitoring, and seamless communication between smart devices. Despite these advantages, the use of public communication channels in HAN and NAN networks introduces critical challenges, such as vulnerability to impersonation, physical tampering, and scalability issues in resource-constrained environments. These issues compromise the stability, reliability, and security of SG environments. Existing protocols often fail to adequately address these challenges, particularly in ensuring resistance to physical tampering of supply lines and impersonation attacks. Additionally, they struggle to minimize the computation, communication, and energy costs associated with securing a resource-constrained SG environment. Therefore, we propose a robust key exchange and tamper-resistant protocol for HAN and NAN networks to address these limitations. The proposed protocol leverages the physical unclonable function (PUF) mechanism to offer physical tampering resistance to smart meters. We validate our protocol formally using the Random or Real (RoR) model, which confirms its security robustness. Additionally, our informal security analysis highlights the protocol’s resilience against impersonation, physical tampering attacks, etc. We analyze and compare the performance of the proposed protocol, which further demonstrates our protocol’s effectiveness and security compared to competing protocols. Moreover, the proposed protocol achieves resource efficiency with 45.99% and 58.85% substantial reductions in computation overhead and energy overhead, respectively, compared to competing protocols. These results showcase the protocol’s enhanced security and practicality for resource-constrained SG environments. © 2014 IEEE.

The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is used for achieving quantum-resistant cryptography when a 256-bit key is applied. This paper presents a high-throughput, seven-stage hardware pipeline architecture for SubByte computations in the AES for information security applications. Composite field arithmetic-based calculations are employed for logic optimization. The proposed architecture includes dedicated multistage multiplication processes based on Galois field polynomials for constants, squaring, and variables;thus, the critical path of SubByte computations is shortened, and the maximum operating frequency is enhanced. The proposed architecture was synthesized using a TSMC 40-nm cell library, and the throughput of the proposed architecture (34.78 Gbps) was observed to be superior to that of an existing state-of-the-art architecture by 43.47%. Moreover, our architecture was noted to consume lower dynamic power for combinational logic circuits, indicating that the proposed architecture has greater computational logic optimization than existing designs. The proposed architecture is feasible for communication security applications in the Internet of Things systems because of its high throughput and area efficiency. © 2013 IEEE.

As China’s population ages, the issue of population aging has become increasingly severe. By the end of 2022, the population aged 60 and above in China has already reached 280 million, with an estimated 25 million falls occurring annually. Falls pose a serious threat to the health and well-being of the elderly. To address this problem, this article presents the design of an intelligent home camera fall detection system aimed at detecting falls and providing immediate assistance. The design incorporates streaming technology and image processing techniques, utilizing a Raspberry Pi camera placed in the home to collect data and stream it via RTMP. A remote server then pulls the video stream and performs fall detection using a combination of the Tiny-YOLOv3, AlphaPose, and ST-GCN algorithms. Upon detecting a fall, the system sends an immediate alert to designated individuals via the PushPlus platform, ensuring timely warnings and effectively safeguarding the safety of the elderly. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Web API networks comprise a multitude of API services, and compared to traditional network environments, they possess unique security requirements and face distinct threats. This article delves into the security characteristics of Web API networks and the particular threats they encounter, establishing evaluation criteria for anomaly detection models tailored to Web API networks and their associated scenarios. Through an integrated assessment of numerous studies, we meticulously compare and analyze various models in terms of false positive rates, robustness, detection latency, and their adaptability and detection capabilities. The findings reveal that while many models excel in detecting singular attacks within the Web API network context, their scope of attack detection is often constrained, making it challenging to comprehensively address the myriad threats Web API networks confront. Moreover, several unresolved challenges persist in the research, such as the scarcity of real-world datasets, inadequate model generalization capabilities, and subpar robustness. © 2023 IEEE.

One of the most important services provided by cloud service providers (CSPs), cloud storage is economically attractive and can provide on-demand data storage service to resource-constrained tenants in the manner of pay-per-use. Therefore, by embracing cloud storage service, tenants can store their large-scale data on the remote cloud host to tremendously reduce local storage burden and computational overhead. However, due to the separation of cloud data ownership and management, cloud storage inevitably suffers from a few new security challenges, such as fine-grained cloud data deletion. To achieve data deletion in cloud storage, we design a vector-commitment-based publicly verifiable data deletion scheme, which can achieve data integrity auditing and block-based fine-grained data deletion. Specifically, our proposed scheme disguises the data deletion operation as data update operation. Therefore, the tenants can achieve data deletion by updating the cloud data blocks with some unrelated data blocks. Meanwhile, the tenants can prevent cloud data from being polluted by periodically performing data integrity auditing operation, thus guaranteeing that the cloud host sincerely maintains the data. Moreover, we formally analyze the security, which shows that our proposed scheme can satisfy all of the anticipative security requirements without interaction with a centralized third party. Finally, we develop a prototype system and evaluate the performance of our proposed scheme, which can intuitively demonstrate the high-efficiency and practicality of our proposal. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Consortium blockchains, with their decentralized characteristics, have found widespread applications across various industries. However, this also forms isolated data islands. These data islands have become obstacles to data sharing between industries, and the issue of cross-chain data consistency verification remains unresolved. Current mainstream cross-chain technologies solve asset transfer issues through complex transaction steps, thus failing to meet the need for efficient data transmission. Existing research has proposed solutions for cross-chain data consistency verification, but two major issues remain. Firstly, these schemes do not consider data changes or support data dynamic operations. Secondly, these schemes involve a significant amount of complex computations, leading to slow efficiency. To address the above issues, we propose DataJudge, a cross-chain data consistency verification scheme based on an extended Merkle hash tree. This scheme not only verifies cross-chain data consistency but also effectively fills the gap in existing schemes regarding dynamic operations. Additionally, we modify the paillier homomorphic encryption. To improve efficiency, we do not introduce many complex computations. Furthermore, the extended Merkle hash tree structure enhances efficiency. Finally, we implement a prototype system and evaluate it. The results demonstrate that DataJudge can effectively verify cross-chain data consistency and outperform existing schemes such as DCIV and BeDCV. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

With the rapid advancement of blockchain technology, its utilization has become widespread across various domains, resulting in the accumulation of significant volumes of valuable data. This trend has created an increasing demand for efficient querying of blockchain data. However, the inherent structure of blockchain leads to low querying efficiency and limited support for complex queries. Therefore, there is a trend toward migrating data to off-chain storage for querying purposes. The untrustworthy nature of the off-chain environment necessitates data validation. However, existing validation schemes incur high costs and fail to ensure the timely updating of the off-chain data. To address the challenges above, we propose ChainSafari, a general, efficient, and real-time synchronized scheme for verifiable querying on the blockchain. In our scheme, we design a general data model for storing transactions of various blockchains and develop an efficient authenticated data structure (ADS) based on this data model, enabling efficient verifiable queries for multiple data types in parallel. Furthermore, we propose a multi-party synchronization detection and recovery protocol to ensure the consistency of on-chain and off-chain data. Finally, we implement a prototype system of ChainSafari and conduct extensive experiments.
