This paper introduces a testbed to study distributed sensing problems of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) exhibiting swarm intelligence. Several Smart City applications, such as transport and disaster response, require efficient collection of sensor data by a swarm of intelligent and cooperative UAVs. This often proves to be too complex and costly to study systematically and rigorously without compromising scale, realism and external validity. With the proposed testbed, this paper sets a stepping stone to emulate, within small laboratory spaces, large sensing areas of interest originated from empirical data and simulation models. Over this sensing map, a swarm of low-cost drones can fly allowing the study of a large spectrum of problems such as energy consumption, charging control, navigation and collision avoidance. The applicability of a decentralized multi-agent collective learning algorithm (EPOS) for UAV swarm intelligence along with the assessment of power consumption measurements provide a proof-of-concept and validate the accuracy of the proposed testbed. Transmissibility function analysis for the detection and localization of damage with nonlinear features in MDOF structural systems

Transmissibility function analysis refers to the evaluation of the ratio between the spectra of two different outputs of a system and has been widely used for the detection and localization of damage in linear structural systems. In this article, a new transmissibility function analysis methodology is proposed to detect and localize damage with nonlinear features in multidegree-of-freedom (MDOF) structural systems. The methodology assumes the MDOF systems are subject to a general input with only the frequency range known a priori so is applicable to address damage detection and location issues for a wide range of engineering structures and systems. This methodology is derived based on the concept of nonlinear output frequency response functions (NOFRFs) and the concept of transmissibility of nonlinear systems introduced based on the NOFRFs. The transmissibility function analysis over output frequencies contributed by system nonlinearities is exploited to detect and localize damage with nonlinear features in MDOF structural systems. Both numerical simulations and experimental studies on a cracked beam structure in the laboratory have been conducted. The results verify the effectiveness and demonstrate the potential applications of the proposed methodology in the detection and localization of damage in practical engineering structures. © The Author(s) 2025.

We introduce a novel framework of continuous-time ultra-wideband-inertial sensor fusion for online motion estimation. Quaternion-based cubic cumulative B-splines are exploited for parameterizing motion states continuously over time. Systematic derivations of analytic kinematic interpolations and spatial differentiations are further provided. Based thereon, a new sliding-window spline fitting scheme is established for asynchronous multi-sensor fusion and online calibration. We conduct a dedicated validation of the quaternion spline fitting method, and evaluate the proposed system, SFUISE (spline fusion-based ultra-wideband-inertial state estimation), in real-world scenarios using public data set and experiments. The proposed sensor fusion system is real-time capable and delivers superior performance over state-of-the-art discrete-time schemes. This paper introduces a modified nondominated sorting genetic algorithm-Ⅱ(NSGA-Ⅱ) to deal with nine objectives for a PI controller tuning problem. With the preferability operator which consists of goals and priorities, the optimal solutions are determined according to the setting preferability rather than conventional weak dominance. In addition, pre-clustering analysis is also utilized in the optimization process to reduce computational cost. The final results show that all objectives are satisfied with better performances comparing with the conventional NSGA-II, which proves the feasibility and effectiveness of this modified method.

Locally resonant metamaterials are among the most studied types of elastic/acoustic metamaterials, with significant research focused on wave propagation in a continuum of "meta-atoms." Here we investigate the collision dynamics of two identical pendulum-suspended mass-in-mass resonators, essentially a two-sphere Newton’s cradle, emphasizing the readily realizable scenario where the internal resonator frequency is much greater than the pendulum frequency. We first show that the dynamics of a collision can be described using effective parameters, similar to how previous metamaterials research has characterized wave propagation through effective material properties. Non-conventional collision dynamics—observed in two colliding mass-in-mass systems where one is initially at rest—include behaviors such as the moving sphere rebounding as if from a fixed wall while the other remains essentially stationary, the spheres coupling and moving forward in near-unison, and the spheres recoiling in opposite directions. These responses can be achieved by tuning the effective parameters. We demonstrate that these parameters can take on values that differ significantly from those in a conventional Newton’s cradle. Additionally, we investigate multiple collisions of the two spheres, revealing complex dynamics. Additive manufacturing (AM) is emerging within many industrial applications due to inherent advantages such as rapid prototyping and produc- tion. However, the correlation of process parameters across modules and their impacts on product quality are not yet fully understood. This article presents a system built out of Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing technologies to collect and analyze AM process in-situ. An IoT thermal camera platform was developed, and integrated within an Laser Based Additive Manufacturing (LBAM) system to collect information that could be used to characterize the thermal distribution surrounding the melt pool. Machine learning techniques were utilised to identify the occurrence of defects using the collected low-resolution thermal images. © 2021 The Author(s).

Using a new set of semidefinite constraints called recurrent dissipativity-based inequalities, this letter presents an iterative procedure to design polynomial feedback control laws for polynomial nonlinear systems, let it be a static state feedback or a linear static output feedback (SOF) controller one needs to determine. In addition to that, the problem of linear SOF design for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems is solved as well. In the case of polynomial systems, we use sum-of-squares (SOS) programming for controller design and to provide an estimate of the closed-loop domain of attraction. In the case of LTI models, a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) is employed in an iterative strategy to determine a stabilizing gain. Numerical simulations on a few examples borrowed from literature are provided in order to emphasize the advantages of our new dissipativity-based control (DBC) method. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

A Novel Approach to Climate Resilience of Infrastructure Networks

With a changing climate, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are likely to increase, posing a threat to infrastructure systems’ resilience. The response of infrastructure systems to localised failures depends on whether assets are affected randomly, in a targeted strategic way, or any way in between. More than that, infrastructure decisions today, including new routes or improvements to existing assets, will underpin the behaviour of the systems over the next century. It is important to separate and analyse the case of climate-based disruptions and how they affect systems’ resilience. This paper presents a probabilistic resilience assessment framework where failure scenarios and network disruptions are generated using weather profile data from climate prediction models with component-level fragility functions. A case study is then carried out to quantify the resilience of Great Britain’s railway passenger transport system to high-temperature-related track buckling under the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) climate change scenario. A 95-year horizon on the resilience of the railway system is drawn. The results also reveal the non-linear responses of the railway system to the increasing temperature and show that models considering random asset failures overestimate the system’s resilience. In order to improve the harsh dynamic environment experienced by heavy rockets during different external excitations,this study presents a novel active variable stiffness vibration isolator(AVS-VI)used as the vibration isolation device to reduce excessive vibration of the whole-spacecraft isolation *** AVS-VI is composed of horizontal stiffness spring,positive stiffness spring,parallelogram linkage mechanism,piezoelectric actuator,acceleration sensor,viscoelastic damping,and PID active *** on the AVS-VI,the generalized vibration transmissibility determined by the nonlinear output frequency response functions and the energy absorption rate is applied to analyze the isolation performance of the whole-spacecraft system with *** AVS-VI can conduct adaptive vibration suppression with variable stiffness to the whole-spacecraft system,and the analysis results indicate that the AVS-VI is efTective in reducing the extravagant vibration of the whole-spacecraft system,where the vibration isolation is decreased up to above 65%under different acceleration ***,different parameters of AVS-VI are considered to optimize the whole-spacecraft system based on the generalized vibration transmissibility and the energy absorption rate.

Unlocking Freeform Structured Surface Denoising with Small Sample Learning: Enhancing Performance Via Physics-Informed Loss and Detail-Driven Data Augmentation

Denoising plays a vital role in surface metrology and other engineering domains. Frequently, these noises manifest themselves as outliers and high-frequency artifacts. Traditional denoising techniques, such as Gaussian and partial differential equation-based diffusion filters, although effective, often involve a time-consuming calibration process, especially when addressing diverse topographical surfaces. The challenge intensifies for novice users in the presence of varied surface textures. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing a learning-based solution that aims to deliver the benefits of traditional filters without the need for manual tuning. Denoising convolutional neural network is employed as the basic architecture due to its effectiveness in tackling mix-level Gaussian noise and adapting to small training dataset. Acknowledging the constraints of limited datasets, prevalent in many engineering scenarios, we propose a novel physics-informed loss. This innovative loss marries filtering techniques with neural network training, tapping into data characteristics for enhanced model performance. Furthermore, we also embrace hybrid data augmentation techniques, going beyond conventional approaches by further generating customized noise maps to enhance recognition of complex components. Through extensive experiments, our proposed denoising model consistently outperforms meticulously calibrated traditional filters on average. Additionally, when juxtaposing our physics-informed loss with the conventional DnCNN loss across different dataset sizes, our approach consistently emerges superior, particularly with more constrained datasets. Furthermore, the new loss shows effectiveness in general image denoising, which proves the robustness and universality of this suggested method. These findings underscore the promise of our method as a general avenue to seamlessly weave domain expertise into neural networks, especially in data-scarce situations of most industr
