Mars B's approach to HSE is embodied in the HSE Vision and Values, adopted early in the project's design phase: (Figure presented) This consistent focus on a caring culture and managing risks to ALARP has manifested itself in a robust design with novel process safety design improvements, notably in the areas of passive hull, riser isolation, temporary refuge integrity, and drilling rig automation. In fabrication, installation, and commissioning, the project has built on the safety successes of the Perdido Project, with nearly a 25% reduction in recordable injury rate. This study considers the removal of accumulated liquid in the lower elbows of gas/liquid pipelines by the gas flowing over the liquid pool, i.e. at zero net liquid flow (ZNLF) conditions. Measurements were performed in a V-shaped section of a pipeline, prefilled with a finite amount of liquid. The maximum gas velocity at which liquid still remains in the V-section, as well as the liquid holdup and pressure gradient at these (critical) conditions were measured for several combinations of fluids and pipe inclination angles. The results were compared with the predictions of a mechanistic model, which was modified to account for the recirculation in the stagnant liquid layer at critical conditions.

We have carried out laboratory experiments for the flow split of a gas-liquid flow from a single flowline to a dual riser. The facility used for the experiments is the air-water loop at the shell technology Centre in Amsterdam. The 2'' diameter loop consists of a 100 m long flowline followed by a dual 15 m high vertical section. The two risers are connected to the same separator at a platform that is operated at atmospheric pressure. This study is an extension of our previous experiments that were carried out for a non-symmetric splitter (i.e. branching tee) at the riser base, whereas the current experiments use a symmetric splitter (i.e. impacting tee) at the riser base. The results showed that even though the riser base splitter was symmetric, the flow split was not fully symmetric. The splitting could be controlled by either partly closing the top valves at the riser top or the two valves at the riser base. At low flow rates one riser was filled with a liquid column and all production went through the other riser. Choking the valves at relatively low flow rates gave hysteresis, which disappeared at increased gas flow rate. The gas flow split could be controlled with the valves. For the liquid flow rates tested there was a strong tendency for the liquid to split more or less evenly over the two risers, almost irrespectively of the back pressure imposed by the valve choking.

CSEM can be used as a tool for regional exploration. However, CSEM-based prospect screening may be often mis-lead by anomalies caused by tight sediments. Integration of acoustic impedance derived from broadband seismic and CSEM helps us to identify those false anomalies and highlight the ones being potentially related to hydrocarbons. We also develop the methodology of inversion-based quantitative interpretation for CSEM and Broadband seismic data in order to quantify hydrocarbon potential and Earth resistivity uncertainty. The Majnoon Field was discovered in 1976 and brought online in 2002 by the Iraq South Oil Company (SOC). In December 2009, during the Ministry of Oil's 2nd Petroleum Licensing Round, shell won the right to develop the field under a Development and Production Services Contract. shell Iraq Petroleum Development BV (SIPD) became operator for the Majnoon Field (45%), with partners Petronas Carigali (30%) and Missan Oil Company (25%). In September 2013, first oil from the combination of newly built and the refurbished existing facilities & wells, was established. In accordance with the terms of the contract, a minimum average flow rate of 175k bpd over a period of 90 days was achieved in order to meet the First Commercial Production (FCP) target and thus allow shell to begin cost recovery. This paper will be based on shell's experience executing the Majnoon field development in South Iraq. The project scope was completed in challenging circumstances, with very little subsurface information available to confirm design assumptions. As a result, a number of execution risks were transferred to the commissioning & initial start-up operations. The team ultimately relied on experience, planned contingencies and intelligent workarounds to achieve the FCP production target. The key startup challenges will be discussed in this paper that are relevant to the audience, particularly those involved in field start-up & operations. Conclusions will relate to how the team overcame flow instabilities (slugging) from daisy chained pipelines (linking the multiple wellpads), crude foaming in the process facilities, welding debris in the flare system, dealing with export curtailment (process stops and re-starts) and establishing custody transfer measurement with SOC. In addition, this paper will present a selected number of Majnoon lessons learned during the commissioning & startup period and how shell improves Project Delivery in subsequent projects to achieve Flawless Startups to meet the o

The gas drift velocity in an elongated bubble can be measured as the bubble velocity moving through stagnant liquid in a pipe. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to numerically simulate the motion of elongated gas bubbles into liquid-filled channels and pipes. The steady, inviscid flow CFD solution agrees with the analytical solution. Furthermore, the CFD solution for viscous flow agrees with new experimental data. Two flow regimes were predicted by the viscous flow simulations: one of constant bubble velocity and another with decreasing bubble velocity over time. A change in flow regime is observed both in terms of the bubble shape and the gas drift velocity. Correlations are derived from the CFD results that describe the time dependent drift velocity as a function of the liquid viscosity.

To achieve corrosion resistance in wet gas and condensate production, use of UNS(1) S31603 clad (metallurgically bonded) carbon steel or UNS S31603 lined (mechanically bonded) carbon steel as line pipe material are two of the options. The success of this application depends on the actual exposure conditions in terms of H2S level, temperature, pH and salt content but also on the straining the stainless steel will undergo. To demonstrate SCC resistance of UNS S31603 liner material in a mildly sour but relatively elevated temperature application in which a strain based pipeline design was applied a series of tests was performed, taking account of both straining that would occur in reeling and in service. Test specimens were taken from shop welds, representative of the welding on the pipeline liner, and from actual liner removed from a test section of the lined pipe. Specimens were tested as tensile bars, which for the actual liner were of flat dog bone shape, in Ripple Strain Rate Tests as noted in ANSI(2)/NACE(3) MR0175/ISO(4) 15156-3. The results showed that, for the exposure conditions simulated, in situ strains up to 1% did not cause SCC. Hence the resistance of the lined pipe against SCC was considered demonstrated up to the strain limit in the pipeline design. © 2014 by NACE International.

17% Cr Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRAs) with a predominately ferrite - martensite metallurgy are now available for use as tubular material in oil and gas production wells under mildly sour conditions. With field experience of these alloys and laboratory test data still limited, a program was carried out investigating the Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) and Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) behavior at a range of temperatures. Cracking tests were performed on tensile bars taken from 17Cr tubular material, and subjected to Ripple Strain Rate Tests (RSRTs) as noted in ISO 15156 part 3 and EFC 17. Exposure conditions in terms of temperature, H2S, pH and salt concentration included both concentrated brine (as in formation water) and low pH aqueous solutions (as in condensing water). Austenitic-ferritic duplex stainless steels in oil and gas production type environments are known to exhibit the highest susceptibility for corrosion cracking at an intermediate temperature regime. The present work showed that the highest susceptibility of the predominately ferrite-martensite 17Cr alloy was found at low temperature, while cracking was also found at intermediate temperatures, in this case around 60°C. Further characterization of cracking resistance in relation to metallography and corrosion resistance will aid an understanding of the application boundaries of the 17Cr alloy. © 2014 by NACE International.

In mature fields, wells and pipelines are often oversized for the current operating conditions. This is because they have been primarily designed to handle early and midlife production, which may lead to slugging issues in later field life. The resulting flow fluctuations frequently lead to liquid handling problems caused by excessive liquid levels and pressure surges in the first stage separator. This can be an important source of downtime due to facility trips and deferment from sub-optimal facility operations. Furthermore, slugs travelling through topside piping can cause integrity issues when they impact bends. In flowline-riser systems, riser-induced slugging can lead to large slugs, especially in deepwater systems. These can usually not be contained in a platform-based separator. In such cases gas lift and conventional choking are often used to mitigate slugging. These two methods have drawbacks, however. For gas lift a source of compressed lift gas must be connected to the riser base and the volumes required to mitigate slugging may cause constraints in gas handling. Conventional choking leads to production deferment due to the backpressure imposed by a partially closed choke. In recent years "active" slug control methods have been developed to overcome these drawbacks. One such system is a relatively inexpensive solution developed by shell Global Solutions∗ known as the Smart Choke. This system has been installed at several locations worldwide and has been proven to be very effective in stabilizing slugging in flowlines and risers. Here, the topside choke is actively controlled to mitigate riser-induced slugging and acts only if flow surges are observed, reducing the peak flow rate into the separator. Between slugs, the choke opens, reducing the imposed backpressure. Since flow fluctuations are reduced, a flowline can be operated at higher average flow rate as the topside facilities can be operated at higher throughputs without risking excessive separator li
