A key issue in upstream E&P operations is how to manage wells and reservoirs more effectively. Oil and gas production from onshore and offshore wells can be relatively difficult to manage, not only because of multiphase nature of the well production, but also due to lack of a continuous, reliable measurement of well/reservoir performance. Reporting continuous production from the wells and performing hydrocarbon allocation with credible accuracy is an area with many challenges in upstream E&P operations. shell's Production Universe (PU) is a novel software application developed by shell to address some fundamental gaps in the management and surveillance of oil and gas production systems. Using data driven models, it is designed to estimate and optimize the production (and injection) of wells continuously in real-time, based on the available wellhead instrumentation. PU provides improved well surveillance, more accurate hydrocarbon accounting, and automatic production reporting and production optimization. The data from PU can also be used for quick analysis to safeguard the technical integrity of wells and reservoirs. It is also cost-effective in that it requires minimal commodity instrumentation and IT systems, much of which may already be present in field operations. Brunei shell Petroleum (BSP) in South East Asia had adopted the PU technology just after it was launched in 2004. Today, BSP continues to deploy PU in all of its assets. Implementation of PU in BSP has helped in exception based surveillance, analysis and troubleshooting;and hence has helped optimized resources being directed towards production optimization activities. It has also improved data quality and reporting. This paper discusses how Production Universe has been instrumental in helping BSP in the above operational and production areas. Large fluctuations in gas and/or liquid production can lead to major disruptions on the topside facilities. Level control of separators becomes difficult with the risk of liquid carry-over into the gas train. Furthermore, the pressure surges accompanying the liquid surges hamper the gas compression facilities. These fluctuations are caused by the fluid composition, geometrical layout and operating conditions of the production system. Especially with flowline/riser systems, the riser may have a large impact on the amplitude of the production fluctuations. With the current trends of producing from marginal gas/condensate and oil fields to existing facilities with subsea tie-backs, the development of more deepwater fields and producing from existing production facilities towards the end of field life cycle issues with irregular production or slugging pipeline systems are observed more frequently. The most recent technology in shell for slug control is the Smart Choke. This technology consists of a single control valve that is installed between the riser top and the first stage separator. It is an active slug control device, and, therefore, continuous acting on changes in the flow of gas and liquid by manipulating the opening of the control valve. Smart Chokes have been installed in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and in Malaysia. The flowlines were experiencing large fluctuations in liquid and gas production and pressure fluctuations at the inlet of the flowline and at the outlet of the riser, which were caused by a hydraulically unstable flowline/riser system. Case histories of deployments in the GoM - as well as recent assessments for shell UK, Malaysia and Nigeria - indicate (potential) production gains of about 5-10%. Also, the technology is used to extend field life. In end of field life, the pipeline is often over dimensioned because of the lower gas rates and increased water production. This paper reports on an experiment aimed at obtaining detailed velocity fields in a wavy liquid layer in stratified air/water pipe flow. By combining Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) with an interface detection technique, the velocity field is resolved from the pipe wall to the interface. Furthermore, since the shape of the interface is resolved at each time instance, this information is used in a phase-averaging procedure, which provides the phase-resolved velocity profiles. These profiles are then used to separate the wave-induced motion from the turbulence-induced motion in the liquid layer. In this way, two different wavy regimes (one laminar and one turbulent) are analysed. The results of the measurements are compared to theory of waves and turbulence. © BHR Group 2013.

Natural gas production from tight and shale gas reservoirs is becoming increasingly important in China as the country shifts from coal-based energy to cleaner energy sources. Recent Chinese sources have estimated that the gas-in-place resources from tight and shale gas reservoirs in China are at least 12 and 31 Tcm, respectively1. In 2008, annual production from tight gas reached 20 Bcm, about 23% of natural gas production in China1. Commercial production from shale gas reservoirs is yet to begin, but is expected to grow rapidly in the future. This paper gives an overview of the production technology challenges of tight and shale gas production in China. Based on a review of the published literature and their own observations, the authors have identified a number of key production technologies that are relevant and can potentially make significant impact on tight and shale gas production in China. They include, among others, management of H2S risks, sourcing and disposal of water for hydraulic fracturing, pad drilling and completion, incorporation of geomechanics in well design and reservoir modeling, non-formation damaging fracturing fluids, and improved multi-stage fracturing techniques. This paper should be of particular interest to subsurface engineers, scientists and managers who are involved in tight and shale gas production in China. It will also be of interest to researchers in universities and research institutes who are interested to develop these technologies to unlock unconventional gas resources in China.

Fluvial-lacustrine deposits of the Xujiahe Formation are the primary reservoir target for an ongoing appraisal project in the northwest Sichuan basin. The late Triassic clastics are comprised of six members T3x1 to T3x6. The amalgamated channel sandstone sections of the T3x2 and T3x4 members may form an "inefficient" Basin- Centered gas play charged from downdip source rock while the calcarenites, coaly shale, and calcareous siltstones of the T3x3 and T3x5/6 are possibly charged by local source rock. Static modelling helped to improve understanding of production history for un-fracced vintage wells and early production behavior of newly drilled appraisal wells. Well sector models (scale of -1x1 km) were created for this purpose. The ability to predict areas with low water production is crucial for the economic feasibility of Xujiahe development. Water saturation versus porosity cross plots provided key input to saturation models in static models. Natural-gas production from tight and shale-gas reservoirs will be increasingly important in China as the country shifts from coal-based energy to cleaner energy sources. Recent Chinese sources have estimated that the gas-in-place resources from tight and shale-gas reservoirs in China are at least 12 x 1012 m3 and 31 x 1012 m3, respectively. In 2008, annual production from tight gas reservoirs reached 20 x 109 m3, approximately 23% of the naturalgas production in China. This paper highlights selected subsurface technologies that are the key contributors to the success in exploring and developing unconventional resources in North America and now elsewhere. Illustrative field examples are presented which have applied these technologies, along with their integrated workflows and best practices, covering a) advanced seismic solutions for unconventionals sweet-spotting;b) improved modelling and numerical simulation software for better hydrocarbon charge prediction and EUR/production forecasts;and c) advanced tools for real-time downhole fracture/production monitoring. Successful field case studies demonstrate how applying advanced techniques may result in reducing lifecycle costs, maximising recovery and minimising environmental impacts in the process of exploring and developing unconventional gas resources. Rapid sharing and replication of new technologies and best practices globally (e.g. from North America to China) will be a key enabler to appraise and develop more resources.

In Sakhalin Energy the oil and gas production from all the wells is monitored in real-time by data-driven models. These models are based on single-rate well test data, test-by-difference data and/or 'synthetic' data generated by physical models. The system is technically easy to maintain, fast to simulate and reconcile with the fiscal meters. SEIC has two new facilities with good instrumentation that allowed for a successful deployment of FieldWare Production Universe for real-time production surveillance and allocation. This paper also highlights the key lessons learnt from the roll-out exercise and the key issues and risks involved during the implementation and execution process. shell has publicly stated a production target of 4 mboe/day by 2018. This will require the recruitment and development of a large number of technical staff both recent graduates as well as experienced professionals. Shortening time to autonomy and time to integration respectively is critical to success. Structured programs are industry proven vehicles to achieve this and to provide the assurance that staff are truly competent to do what they are required to do. In addition, competence driven development programs offer a clear performance and competence bar. This paper describes Royal Dutch shell's approach to developing this critical pipeline of technical professionals by outlining the necessary and sufficient conditions for success of the shell Graduate Programme, the Advanced Technical Programme and our approach to integrating Experienced Hires. The shell Graduate Programme is an integrated approach that combines formal learning, with on the job tasks, active involvement of technical coaches and line managers and standardized methods of competence assurance. Not only does this follow the 70/20/10 methodology of learning but also results in the expected "time to autonomy" for graduate joiners being reduced by 1 to 2 yrs as compared to other less comprehensive approaches. In addition to closing critical capability gaps in the business, this is also a clear component of the Employee Value Proposition as Generation Y graduates today look for faster and more structured progression when selecting their employer of choice. The Advanced Technical Programme which is aimed at staff exiting the shell Graduate Programme as well as experienced hires with only a few years relevant business experience, builds on the Graduate Programme and uses the same structures and principles. It focuses on developing technical professionals to make non standard, original technical decisions autonomously (and similarly follows the principles of blended learning combined with active involvement

An effective monitoring plan must be site-specific, risk based and adaptive. This paper examines the development of such a CO 2 storage monitoring plan for the offshore North Sea Goldeneye candidate CO 2 storage complex. Significant detail is shown to demonstrate the level of analysis required to mature a CO 2 storage project to a level at which a permit application is possible.
