The development of a CO2 value chain for CCS poses a number of decisions relating to the capture technology, storage selection and transportation of CO2. In addition, an appropriate approach to the non-technical aspects and risks needs to be incorporated. This paper will provide an overview of the different options available to projects and discuss the selections that shell has made in its own CCS project development. shell has developed a global portfolio of CCS demonstration projects driven by the recognition that carbon capture and storage is currently the only technology available to mitigate emissions from large scale fossil fuel use. shell's projects cover a wide range of technologies and consist of targeted applications that are of relevance to the wider oil and gas industry. The shell portfolio includes Peterhead, Quest, technology Centre Mongstad and Gorgon. The development of these projects has demonstrated that there are multiple drivers in the development of a CO2 value chain and these can be very project specific. In the development of CCS for power plants, one of the key considerations is the ability of power plants to be able to respond flexibly to the normal fluctuating demands of the power market. Therefore, a key driver in technology selection is to limit the impact that the addition of a CCS plant could have on this flexibility. On the other hand, availability may not be the most important factor, because power plants usually use an end of pipe CO2 solution, and therefore the unavailability of a post-combustion CCS plant will have minimal technical impact on the power export. However, for a hydrogen plant where hydrogen demand can be relatively stable e.g. in a refinery, then the capture technology selected will not usually need to follow a varying demand but, because the capture technology could be part of the wider process, it may need to offer high reliability and availability. shell is developing an offshore gas-condensate field in Asia-pacific. Sand is expected to be co-produced during the life of this project due to minimal downhole sand control, which combined with high gas flow rate potentially could have posed a significant threat to the integrity of the subsea hardware due to erosion. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based erosion study has been carried out to identify the location of erosion hotspots and erosion rates in the piping of the subsea X-mas tree, well Jumper and Manifold. The study has been used to either determine Inconel 625 clad thickness to be provided on the inner wall of the piping or modify the design of the piping to bring the erosion within acceptable limits. The CFD models have been validated using experiments in controlled environment. Through this study, the risk of potential erosive failure of the piping in the subsea hardware, leading to loss of containment has been greatly reduced. In literature, CFD based erosion modeling has been used and validated on simple geometries (elbow, target tee, internal diameter reduction etc). In this work, erosion in the entire piping which is a combination of such simple entities has been calculated in an integrated manner. The results show that the required cladding varies between 3mm and 7mm. The knowledge about erosion acquired in the past through experimental and modeling exercises, has been utilized to create a technique to do assessment and management of sand erosion in the subsea hardware. This integrated modeling approach provides insights about the behavior of sand particles in complex piping geometries, which can help design the piping, especially at locations of change in flow direction. A key issue in upstream E&P operations is how to manage wells and reservoirs more effectively. Oil and gas production from onshore and offshore wells can be relatively difficult to manage, not only because of multiphase nature of the well production, but also due to lack of a continuous, reliable measurement of well/reservoir performance. Reporting continuous production from the wells and performing hydrocarbon allocation with credible accuracy is an area with many challenges in upstream E&P operations. shell's Production Universe (PU) is a novel software application developed by shell to address some fundamental gaps in the management and surveillance of oil and gas production systems. Using data driven models, it is designed to estimate and optimize the production (and injection) of wells continuously in real-time, based on the available wellhead instrumentation. PU provides improved well surveillance, more accurate hydrocarbon accounting, and automatic production reporting and production optimization. The data from PU can also be used for quick analysis to safeguard the technical integrity of wells and reservoirs. It is also cost-effective in that it requires minimal commodity instrumentation and IT systems, much of which may already be present in field operations. Brunei shell Petroleum (BSP) in South East Asia had adopted the PU technology just after it was launched in 2004. Today, BSP continues to deploy PU in all of its assets. Implementation of PU in BSP has helped in exception based surveillance, analysis and troubleshooting;and hence has helped optimized resources being directed towards production optimization activities. It has also improved data quality and reporting. This paper discusses how Production Universe has been instrumental in helping BSP in the above operational and production areas. The main fractionator of the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU-1) in Whangarei refinery of The New Zealand Refining Company Limited (NZRC) was retrofitted with high capacity internals to increase the unit throughput from 8500 ton/day to 13000 ton/day. shell ultra high capacity ConSep trays were applied in the most capacity constrained HGO pump-around (mid circulating reflux) section of the column as no other first generation high capacity tray was found adequate to debottleneck this section. By the application of ConSep trays, capex savings of the order of USD 5.5 - 6 million was achieved compared to other conventional debottlenecking options. This was the first application of ConSep trays in a CDU main fractionator and the post revamp test run established the realization of the expected performance.

The effort, timeline and budget required for CO2 storage site characterization is often underestimated. Depending upon geology, volumes and composition of the CO2 stream to be stored, data acquisition, that may involve appraisal wells, injection tests, Special Core Analysis (SCAL), geomechanical and geochemical experiments, the timeline to conduct the site characterization may run into years and the budget required into tens of millions of dollars. Experience in site characterization, in many different CO2 storage projects, has enabled a "roadmap" to be developed showing key decisions and work activities from initial screening through to the final investment decision. The primary focus of the roadmap is on the work scope of an integrated subsurface team, but it is part of a broader integrated set of activities which include capture, transportation, and storage elements. This roadmap has been used in the characterization of a CO2 Storage Site for ZeroGen in Queensland, Australia. For each phase of the project, work activities are directed at reducing uncertainties to the point that key project decisions can be taken. The culmination is a final CO2 Storage Site Development Plan. Interdisciplinary risk and uncertainty assessments are key steps along the way which drive appraisal and data collection tactics. As new data is assimilated into the site assessment the work proceeds, in an iterative manner, as the views on Storage Site Capacity, Injectivity and Containment evolve. Throughout the site characterization phases, common threads, like the Monitoring Measurement and Verification strategy, are matured from an initial range of identified approaches and technologies into an Operating Philosophy. Constant and early attention and priority is given to Heath, Safety, Environmental and Community issues throughout the work activities and milestone reviews.
