Ice shelves are important passageways for ice sheets flowing into the ocean. Through iceberg calving and basal melting, ice shelves exert considerable influence on the mass balance of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and glacier stability. The Ross Ice Shelf (RIS), the largest body of floating ice on Earth, plays an essential role in any changes in the mass balance of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The long-term elevation change trend of RIS has been calculated with multiple satellite altimetry in previous studies. However, the seasonal variations were less revealed. Based on crossover analysis and indirect observation adjustments, this study proposed a new method for constructing seasonal records for surface elevation changes in the RIS using ICESat laser altimetry data from 2003 to 2009. The results showed that surface elevation changes exhibited seasonal variations with fluctuations over 20 cm, and the seasonal change characteristics were closely related to the temperature. Interannual variations in RIS surface elevation decreased from 2003 to 2009 at a rate of 2 cm/yr. From March 2003 to April 2007, the surface elevation decreased at 3.7 cm/yr;however, after April 2007, the surface elevation increased at 5.5 cm/yr. The more recent stages of surface elevation growth have been influenced by reductions in the summer basal melt, which is related to the decreases in ocean heat content. © 2024 Editorial office of Geodesy and Geodynamics

Occurrence, sources, and human exposure assessment of amine-based rubber additives in dust from various micro-environments in South China

Despite the ubiquitous use and potential health effects of amine-based rubber additives, information regarding their occurrences in indoor environments remains scarce and is basically investigated in traffic-related environments. In this study, a total of 140 dust samples collected from eight indoor micro-environments were analyzed for twelve amine-based rubber additives. Overall, 1,3-diphenylguanidine (DPG), dicyclohexylamine (DCHA), N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-p-penylenediamine (6PPD), 6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ), and hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine (HMMM) were frequently detected across all micro-environments with detection frequencies of 97 %, 51 %, 71 %, 99 %, and 77 %, respectively. The highest total concentration of amine-based rubber additives was found in parking lots (median 10,300 ng/g), indicating heavier emission sources of these compounds in vehicle-related indoor environments. Despite this, amine-based rubber additives were also frequently detected in various non-vehicle-related environments, such as markets, cinemas, and hotels, probably due to the widespread use of consumer products and more frequent air exchanges with outdoor environments. Further tracking of tire rubber products and paint particles from flooring materials in parking lots revealed that paint particles might be an overlooked contributor to amine-based rubber additives in indoor environments. Finally, the highest estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of all amine-based rubber additives via dust ingestion at home were observed for toddlers (3.48 ng/kg bw/d). This research provides a comprehensive overview of human exposure to a variety of amine-based rubber additives in various indoor environments. Environmental implication: This study highlights the presence of high concentrations of amine-based additives in indoor dust from both traffic-related and non-traffic-related indoor environments. As a typical two-dimensional(2D)transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDCs)material with nonzero band gap,MoS_(2)has a wide range of potential applications as building blocks in the field of *** stability and reliability of the corresponding nanoelectronic devices depend critically on the mechanical performance and cyclic reliability of 2D MoS_(2).Although an in situ technique has been used to analyze the mechanical properties of 2D materials,the cyclic mechanical behavior,that is,fatigue,remains a major challenge in the practical application of the *** study was aimed at analyzing the planar cyclic performance and deformation behavior of three-layer MoS_(2)nanosheets(NSs)using an in situ transmission electron microscopy(TEM)variable-amplitude uniaxial low-frequency and cyclic loading-unloading tensile acceleration *** also elucidated the strengthening effect of the natural overlaying affix fragments(other external NSs)or wrinkle folds(internal folds from the NS itself)on cycling performances and service life of MoS_(2)NSs by delaying the whole process of fatigue crack initiation,propagation,and *** results have been confirmed by molecular dynamics(MDs)*** overlaying enhancement effect effectively ensures the long-term reliability and stability of nanoelectronic devices made of few-layer 2D materials.

The outbreak of red tide seriously affects marine ecology and exploitation of fishery resources, so it is necessary to monitor for suspended particles in seawater. Due to the characteristics of various types and great changes of suspended particles in seawater, a detailed classification method based on big data is needed, and polarized light technology has great potential in this respect. In this study, we have designed a prototype for measuring absorption and scattering properties based on polarized light illumination by adding polarization state generation module and polarization state analysis module on the base of a commercial instrument named AC-S. The prototype can measure the intrinsic optical properties of water for different incident polarized light, including water extinction coefficient c(λ) and absorption coefficient a(λ). In addition, the prototype can also measure the polarization scattering information of suspended particles, which is closely related to the complex refractive index, morphology and microstructure of particles. The polarization properties of water bodies are represented by Stokes vectors. The instrument is illuminated by LED with a central wavelength of 532nm. During the measurement, a pump drives the sample through the flow tube for detection. The polarization generation module produces a specific incident polarization beam that is directed through an optical window into the flow tube. The light signal, which is absorbed and scattered by the suspended particles in the flow tube, is then received by the polarization analysis module, which completes the measurement of light intensity and polarization. The experimental results show that for the same sample, the inherent optical properties are different under different incident polarization states, which is closely related to the properties of particles in water. In this paper, we have built an a Stokes imaging microscope system with a large field of view, and then validated the system. Because of the thin pathology sections and the low signal-to-noise ratio of Stokes imaging, accurate measurements of the weaker polarization signals are required. So at the light source side, we added a beam shaping module to make the distribution of light intensity more uniform. In addition, we used air as a standard sample to calibrate the measurement results, which makes the results more accurate. The specific slide scanning process is also presented in this paper, and we have used the solution to test it on actual pathology sections, and the experimental results show that the complete system works well and has the potential to assist in pathology analysis. © 2023 SPIE.

Time resolving the photoelectron motion driven by the magnetic component of a laser field

In photoionization, the nondipole interactions induce forward-backward asymmetric photoelectron energy along the laser propagation direction. By employing nondipole modified strong-field approximation, we attribute this emission-direction-dependent photoelectron energy to the displacement induced by the magnetic component of a laser pulse. The displacement induced by the magnetic field gives rise to a phase difference between the electron wave packets with different ionization instants. It results in a shift of the interference fringes, manifesting as the asymmetric photoelectron energy along the laser propagation direction. By numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we demonstrate that the time-resolved displacement with picometer resolution is traced from the time-delay-dependent asymmetric photoelectron energy in attosecond photoelectron interferometry. The cycle-averaged displacement is retrieved from the intercycle interference and dynamic interference. Moreover, we show that the magnetic field induced momentum also results in emission-direction-dependent photoelectron energy. From the asymmetric photoelectron energy in the attosecond streaking spectrum, the time-resolved momentum induced by the magnetic field is revealed.

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm is widely used in unmanned and robotic applications. SLAM usually uses sensor data, which are from the LiDAR, the inertial measurement unit (IMU) and the wheeled odometry, to build maps of the surrounding environment. However, the motion distortion of LiDAR data and the error accumulation of wheeled odometry can affect the accuracy of the front-end odometry of the SLAM algorithm, which can lead to serious errors in the maps created. Therefore, in order to solve the problem of poor map construction results of SLAM algorithm due to various types of sensor errors. we propose the traceless Kalman filtering based (UKF-based) multi-sensor data processing algorithm. Firstly, the proposed algorithm uses the UKF to fuse IMU and wheeled odometry data to reduce the cumulative error of wheeled odometry. And then the algorithm uses IMU and corrected wheeled odometry data and combines with the motion states of the robot to solve the motion distortion problem of LiDAR data. Finally, we verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for wheeled odometry data correction in Gazebo simulation environment and real environment experiments, and compared the mapping effectiveness of SLAM by using the original data and the data processed by our algorithm. The experimental results show that the map construction effect of SLAM algorithm is significantly improved when using the sensor data processed by the algorithm. Experimental validation on the robot shows that the proposed algorithm has universal applicability and good compatibility. © 2023 IEEE.

Utilizing high-resolution antenna arrays and wide bandwidth of the millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum in 5G new radio (NR) mmWave communication systems holds the potential for high-throughput data transmission while enabling user localization and environmental mapping. However, the majority of existing simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms rely on methods akin to the extended Kalman filter for generating initial map features. These methods prove ineffective when the measurement dimension is insufficient. Furthermore, there is a notable absence of research exploring mmWave prototype systems to evaluate and compare the performance and viability of various SLAM algorithms. To address these challenges, we propose an innovative probability hypothesis density (PHD) generation scheme for birth events and have developed a prototype system. Our approach, referred to as PHD-SLAM, exhibits remarkable effectiveness even in scenarios where the measurement dimension falls short of map features. This means it can function seamlessly with only delay or angle information available. Additionally, we have designed a 28GHz mmWave beam scanning prototype system that leverages the 5G NR frame for accomplishing SLAM algorithms. Following this, we conducted extensive simulations and experimental evaluations to gauge the performance of several leading-edge SLAM algorithms under diverse mmWave circumstances, encompassing PHD-based and belief propagation (BP) SLAM algorithms. Our analysis reveals that both PHD and BP SLAM can achieve agent localization precision within a decimeter and mapping precision within a meter, capitalizing on the angle parameters of mmWave signals. While BP SLAM showcases reduced computational demand, its estimation precision is marginally inferior to that of PHD-SLAM. © 2014 IEEE.

Real-Time Optical Polarization measurement and Characterization of Submersible Windows' Stress Under Full-Ocean-Depth Hydrostatic Pressure

Real-time monitoring of the window's stress is crucial for assessing the status and safety of submersibles working in deep sea, in which the effective measurement and characterization are desired. This work reports a measurement system to monitor submersible windows' stress under full-ocean-depth hydrostatic pressure. A measurement setup is designed for online collecting the Mueller matrix images of nine scaled windows on which are exerted the hydrostatic pressure maximal to 120 MPa. Subsequently, a series of characterization parameters are extracted through the analysis of polarization and texture features. The images of polarization parameters can clearly show the phenomena such as the accumulation, redistribution, and release of window's internal stress. Moreover, some characterization parameters can steadily characterize the stress in windows during the pressurization, depressurization, and creep. Further, it is found that some characterization parameters show a bit of differences among the windows, while some are sensitive to deformation but some are sensitive to stress. The scheme of this measurement system provides a way to effectively monitor the internal stress of the windows, which help to ensure the safety of the submersibles. © 2025 IEEE.
