Depression can significantly impact many aspects of an individual’s life, including their personal and social functioning, academic and work performance, and overall quality of life. Many researchers within the field of affective computing are adopting deep learning technology to explore potential patterns related to the detection of depression. However, because of subjects’ privacy protection concerns, that data in this area is still scarce, presenting a challenge for the deep discriminative models used in detecting depression. To navigate these obstacles, a large-scale multimodal vlog dataset (LMVD), for depression recognition in the wild is built. In LMVD, which has 1823 samples with 214 hours of the 1475 participants captured from four multimedia platforms (Sina Weibo, Bilibili, Tiktok, and YouTube). A novel architecture termed MDDformer to learn the non-verbal behaviors of individuals is proposed. Extensive validations are performed on the LMVD dataset, demonstrating superior performance for depression detection. LMQFormer: A Laplace-Prior-Guided Mask Query Transformer for Lightweight Snow Removal

Snow removal aims to locate snow areas and recover clean images without repairing traces. Unlike the regularity and semitransparency of rain, snow with various patterns and degradations seriously occludes the background. As a result, the state-of-the-art snow removal methods usually retains a large parameter size. In this paper, we propose a lightweight but high-efficient snow removal network called Laplace Mask Query Transformer (LMQFormer). Firstly, we present a LaplaceVQVAE to generate a coarse mask as prior knowledge of snow. Instead of using the mask in dataset, we aim at reducing both the information entropy of snow and the computational cost of recovery. Secondly, we design a Mask Query Transformer (MQFormer) to remove snow with the coarse mask, where we use two parallel encoders and a hybrid decoder to learn extensive snow features under lightweight requirements. Thirdly, we develop a Duplicated Mask Query Attention (DMQA) that converts the coarse mask into a specific number of queries, which constraint the attention areas of MQFormer with reduced parameters. Experimental results in popular datasets have demonstrated the efficiency of our proposed model, which achieves the state-of-the-art snow removal quality with significantly reduced parameters and the lowest running time. Efficient Match Pair Retrieval for Large-scale UAV Images via Graph Indexed Global Descriptor

SfM (Structure from Motion) has been extensively used for UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) image orientation. Its efficiency is directly influenced by feature matching. Although image retrieval has been extensively used for match pair selection, high computational costs are consumed due to a large number of local features and the large size of the used codebook. Thus, this paper proposes an efficient match pair retrieval method and implements an integrated workflow for parallel SfM reconstruction. First, an individual codebook is trained online by considering the redundancy of UAV images and local features, which avoids the ambiguity of training codebooks from other datasets. Second, local features of each image are aggregated into a single high-dimension global descriptor through the VLAD (Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors) aggregation by using the trained codebook, which remarkably reduces the number of features and the burden of nearest neighbor searching in image indexing. Third, the global descriptors are indexed via the HNSW (Hierarchical Navigable Small World) based graph structure for the nearest neighbor searching. Match pairs are then retrieved by using an adaptive threshold selection strategy and utilized to create a view graph for divide-and-conquer based parallel SfM reconstruction. Finally, the performance of the proposed solution has been verified using three large-scale UAV datasets. The test results demonstrate that the proposed solution accelerates match pair retrieval with a speedup ratio ranging from 36 to 108 and improves the efficiency of SfM reconstruction with competitive accuracy in both relative and absolute orientation. © 2023, CC BY.

Restoration of User Videos Shared on Social Media

User videos shared on social media platforms usually suffer from degradations caused by unknown proprietary processing procedures, which means that their visual quality is poorer than that of the originals. This paper presents a new general video restoration framework for the restoration of user videos shared on social media platforms. In contrast to most deep learning-based video restoration methods that perform end-to-end mapping, where feature extraction is mostly treated as a black box, in the sense that what role a feature plays is often unknown, our new method, termed Video restOration through adapTive dEgradation Sensing (VOTES), introduces the concept of a degradation feature map (DFM) to explicitly guide the video restoration process. Specifically, for each video frame, we first adaptively estimate its DFM to extract features representing the difficulty of restoring its different regions. We then feed the DFM to a convolutional neural network (CNN) to compute hierarchical degradation features to modulate an end-to-end video restoration backbone network, such that more attention is paid explicitly to potentially more difficult to restore areas, which in turn leads to enhanced restoration performance. We will explain the design rationale of the VOTES framework and present extensive experimental results to show that the new VOTES method outperforms various state-of-the-art techniques both quantitatively and qualitatively. Facial image based kinship verification aims to decide whether there exists kinship between the given facial images. In practice, the cross-generation differences will cause adverse effects on kinship verification, which limits the performance. Therefore, how to mine the implied similarity from facial images with large cross-generation divergence is an important problem in kinship verification, which has not yet been well studied. In view of this, we propose a Similarity Mining via Implicit matching pattern LEarning (SMILE) approach for kinship verification. Specifically, SMILE mainly consists of two modules, including a Semi-coupled Multi-pattern Similarity Learning (SMSL) module and a Cross-Generation Feature Normalization (CGFN) module. The SMSL module is designed to learn multiple semi-coupled matching patterns for mining the implicit facial similarity information from different perspectives. The CGFN module aims to reduce the divergence between facial images of parent and child. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods.

Frequency-driven Imperceptible Adversarial Attack on Semantic Similarity

Current adversarial attack research reveals the vulnerability of learning-based classifiers against carefully crafted perturbations. However, most existing attack methods have inherent limitations in cross-dataset generalization as they rely on a classification layer with a closed set of categories. Furthermore, the perturbations generated by these methods may appear in regions easily perceptible to the human visual system (HVS). To circumvent the former problem, we propose a novel algorithm that attacks semantic similarity on feature representations. In this way, we are able to fool classifiers without limiting attacks to a specific dataset. For imperceptibility, we introduce the low-frequency constraint to limit perturbations within high-frequency components, ensuring perceptual similarity between adversarial examples and originals. Extensive experiments on three datasets (CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ImageNet-1K) and three public online platforms indicate that our attack can yield misleading and transferable adversarial examples across architectures and datasets. Additionally, visualization results and quantitative performance (in terms of four different metrics) show that the proposed algorithm generates more imperceptible perturbations than the state-of-the-art methods. Human activity recognition can be applied to various applications, ranging from intelligent security to medical care. Action recognition via WiFi had caught great attention due to its ubiquity, non-occlusion and privacy preservation. Movement of human body can cause fluctuations in the wireless signal reflection, resulting in fluctuation of channel state information (CSI), which is computed from the received WiFi signal containing detailed information of current channel conditions for different sub-carriers and spatial streams, and this can be used to classify human activities. In this paper, we focus on the human activity recognition problem based on the features extracted from CSI data using deep neural network. First, the application of human activity classification as well as data preprocessing techniques are introduced in details, and then a fully connected network is developed as the baseline network model. Furthermore, the weight sharing technique is introduced with the similarity network structure, and a new hybrid loss containing the classification loss and similarity loss is proposed. Experiment results are also included and show that the proposed network can achieve higher classification accuracy than the baseline model. © 2020 IEEE.

A Global Reweighting Approach for Cross-Domain Semantic Segmentation

Unsupervised domain adaptation semantic segmentation attracts much research attention due to the expensive pixel-level annotation cost. Since the adaptation difficulty of samples is different, the weight of samples should be set independently, which is called reweighting. However, existing reweighting methods only calculate local reweighting information from predicted results or context information in batch images of two domains, which may lead to over-alignment or under-alignment problems. To handle this issue, we propose a global reweighting approach. Specifically, we first define the target centroid distance, which describes the distance between the source batch data and the target centroid. Then, we introduce a Fréchet Inception Distance metric to evaluate the domain divergence and embed it into the target centroid distance. Finally, a global reweighting strategy is proposed to enhance the knowledge transferability in the source domain supervision. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach achieves competitive performance and helps to improve performance in other methods. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The rapid advancement of photorealistic generators has reached a critical juncture where the discrepancy between authentic and manipulated images is increasingly indistinguishable. Thus, benchmarking and advancing techniques detecting digital manipulation become an urgent issue. Although there have been a number of publicly available face forgery datasets, the forgery faces are mostly generated using GAN-based synthesis technology, which does not involve the most recent technologies like diffusion. The diversity and quality of images generated by diffusion models have been significantly improved and thus a much more challenging face forgery dataset shall be used to evaluate SOTA forgery detection literature. In this paper, we propose a large-scale, diverse, and fine-grained high-fidelity dataset, namely GenFace, to facilitate the advancement of deepfake detection, which contains a large number of forgery faces generated by advanced generators such as the diffusion-based model and more detailed labels about the manipulation approaches and adopted generators. In addition to evaluating SOTA approaches on our benchmark, we design an innovative Cross Appearance-Edge Learning (CAEL) detector to capture multi-grained appearance and edge global representations, and detect discriminative and general forgery traces. Moreover, we devise an Appearance-Edge Cross-Attention (AECA) module to explore the various integrations across two domains. Extensive experiment results and visualizations show that our detection model outperforms the state of the arts on different settings like cross-generator, cross-forgery, and cross-dataset evaluations. FaceBench: A Multi-View Multi-Level Facial Attribute VQA Dataset for Benchmarking Face Perception MLLMs

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in various tasks. However, effectively evaluating these MLLMs on face perception remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we introduce FaceBench, a dataset featuring hierarchical multi-view and multi-level attributes specifically designed to assess the comprehensive face perception abilities of MLLMs. Initially, we construct a hierarchical facial attribute structure, which encompasses five views with up to three levels of attributes, totaling over 210 attributes and 700 attribute values. Based on the structure, the proposed FaceBench consists of 49,919 visual question-answering (VQA) pairs for evaluation and 23,841 pairs for fine-tuning. Moreover, we further develop a robust face perception MLLM baseline, Face-LLaVA, by training with our proposed face VQA data. Extensive experiments on various mainstream MLLMs and Face-LLaVA are conducted to test their face perception ability, with results also compared against human performance. The results reveal that, the existing MLLMs are far from satisfactory in understanding the fine-grained facial attributes, while our Face-LLaVA significantly outperforms existing open-source models with a small amount of training data and is comparable to commercial ones like GPT-4o and Gemini.
