Low-condensation diesel use contributes to winter haze in cold regions of China

The application of low-condensation diesel in cold regions with extremely low ambient temperatures(−14 to−29℃)has enabled the operation of diesel ***,it may contribute to heavy haze pollution in cold regions during *** we examine pollutant emissions from low-condensation diesel in *** measure the emissions of elemental carbon(EC),organic carbon(OC),and elements,including heavy metals such as arsenic(As).Our results show that low-condensation diesel increased EC and OC emissions by 2.5 and 2.6 times compared to normal diesel fuel,*** of vehicular sources,including EC,As,lead(Pb),cadmium(Cd),chromium(Cr),nickel(Ni),and manganese(Mn),increased by approximately 20.2-162.5%when using low-condensation *** variation of vehicular source indicators,observed at road site ambient environments revealed the enhancement of PM2.5 pollution by the application of low-condensation diesel in *** findings suggest that−35#diesel,a low-cetane index diesel,may enhance air pollution in winter,according to a dynamometer test conducted in *** raises questions about whether higher emissions are released if−35#diesel is applied to running vehicles in real-world cold ambient environments.

China is the largest developing economy and carbon dioxide emitter in the world,the carbon neutrality goal of which will have a profound influence on the mitigation pathway of global climate *** transition towards a carbon-neutral society is integrated into the construction of ecological civilization in China,and brings profound implications for China’s socioeconomic ***,we not only summarize the major challenges in achieving carbon neutrality in China,but also identify the four potential new opportunities:namely,the acceleration of technology innovations,narrowing regional disparity by reshaping the value of resources,transforming the industrial structure,and co-benefits of pollution and carbon ***,we provide five policy suggestions and highlight the importance of balancing economic growth and carbon mitigation,and the joint efforts among the government,the enterprises,and the residents.

Removal of pharmaceutical in a biogenic/chemical manganese oxide system driven by manganese-oxidizing bacteria with humic acids as sole carbon source

Bioaugmented sand filtration has attracted considerable attention because it can effectively remove contaminants in drinking water without additional chemical reagent *** this study,a synthesized chemical manganese dioxide (MnO_(2)) -coated quartz sand(MnQS) and biogenic manganese oxide (BioMnOx) composite system was proposed to simultaneously remove typical pharmaceutical contaminants and Mn_(2)+.We demonstrated a manganese-oxidizing bacterium,Pseudomonas ***-1,could oxidize Mn_(2)+to generate BioMnOxusing humic acids (HA) as sole carbon *** coaction of MnQS,QJX-1,and the generated BioMnOxin simultaneously removing caffeine and Mn_(2)+in the presence of HA was *** found a synergistic effect between *** and BioMnOxtogether significantly increased the caffeine removal efficiency from 32.8%(MnQS alone) and 21.5%(BioMnOxalone) to 61.2%.Meanwhile,Mn_(2)+leaked from MnQS was rapidly oxidized by QJX-1 to regenerate reactive BioMnOx,which was beneficial for continuous contaminant removal and system *** degradation intermediates of caffeine oxidized by MnQS and BioMnOxwere detected by LC-QTOF-MS analysis,which implied that caffeine was oxidized by a different ***,this work promotes the potential application of bioaugmented sand filtration in pharmaceutical removal in the presence of natural organic matter in drinking water.

Microbial electrosynthesis(MES)is an emerging technology for producing chemicals,and coupling MES to anodic waste oxidation can simultaneously increase the competitiveness and allow additional functions to be *** this study,MES was used for the simultaneous removal of ammonia from synthetic urine and production of acetate from CO_(2).Using graphite anode,83.2%±5.3%ammonia removal and 28.4%±9.9%total nitrogen removal was achieved,with an energy consumption of 1.32 kWh/g N for total nitrogen removal,0.45 kWh/g N for ammonia nitrogen removal,and 0.044 kWh/g for acetate *** boron-doped diamond(BDD)anode,70.9%±12.1%ammonia removal and 51.5%±11.8%total nitrogen removal was obtained,with an energy consumption of 0.84 kWh/g N for total nitrogen removal,0.61 kWh/g N for ammonia nitrogen removal,and 0.043 kWh/g for acetate production.A difference in nitrate accumulation explained the difference of total nitrogen removal *** of ammonia and acetate across the membrane deteriorated the performance of *** results are important for the development of novel elcctricity-driven technologies for chemical production and pollution removal.

Cleaner geopolymer prepared by co-activation of gasification coal fly ash and steel slag:durability properties and economic assessment

Geopolymer is a material with high early ***,the insufficient durability properties,such as long-term strength,acid-base resistance,freeze-thaw resistance,leaching toxicity,thermal stability,sulfate resistance and carbonation resistance,restrain its practical ***,a longterm stable geopolymer composite with high final strength(ASK1)was synthesized from shell coal gasification fly ash(SFA)and steel slag(SS).Additionally,a geopolymer composite with high early strength(ASK2)was also synthesized for *** results showed that ASK1 exhibited better performance on freezing-thawing resistance,carbonization resistance and heavy metals stabilization compared to the ASK2 at long-term *** the curing temperature could accelerate the unconfined compressive strength(UCS)development at initial curing ages of 3 to 7 *** ASK1 and ASK2 exhibited excellent acid-base and sulfate corrosion *** increase for UCS was seen under KOH solution and MgSO_(4)solution corrosion for *** leaching concentrations of heavy metals out of the two geopolymers were below the standard threshold,even after 50 freezingthawing *** ASK1 and ASK2 geopolymer concrete exhibited higher sustainability and economic efficiency than Portland cement *** result of this study not only provides a suitable way for the utilization of industrial solid waste in civil and environmental engineering,but also opens a new approach to improve the long-term stabilities of the geopolymers.

Impacts of backwashing on micropollutant removal and associated microbial assembly processes in sand filters

Backwashing is crucial for preventing clogging of sand ***,few studies have investigated the effect of backwashing on micropollutant removal and the dynamic changes in the microbial community in sand ***,we used a series of manganese and quartz sand filters under empty bed contact times(EBCTs)of 2 h and 4 h to explore variations in micropollutant degradation and temporal dynamics of the microbial community after *** results showed that the removal efficiencies of caffeine,sulfamethoxazole,sulfadiazine,trimethoprim,atrazine,and active biomass recovered within 2 d after backwashing in both types of sand filters at 2-h EBCT,but the recovery of sulfadiazine and trimethoprim was not observed at 4-h ***,the removal efficiency of atenolol increased after backwashing in the manganese sand filters,whereas maintained almost complete removal efficiency in the quartz sand filters at both *** correlation analysis indicated that microbial community composition gradually recovered to the pre-backwashing level(R increased from 0.53 to 0.97)at 2-h EBCT,but shifted at 4-h EBCT(R<0.25)after ***,the compositions of the recovered,depleted,and improved groups of microbes were distinguished by applying hierarchical clustering to the differentially abundant amplicon sequence *** cumulative relative abundance of recovered microbes at 2-h EBCT was 82.76%±0.43%and 46.82%±4.34%in the manganese and quartz sand filters,*** contrast,at 4-h EBCT,the recovered microbes dropped to 15.55%–25.69%in both types of sand filters.

CO_(2)emission inventory provides fundamental data for climate research and emission ***,most global CO_(2)emission inventories were developed with energy statistics from International Energy Agency(IEA)and were available at country level with limited source ***,as the first step toward a high-resolution and dynamic updated global CO_(2)emission database,we developed a data-driven approach to construct seamless and highly-resolved energy consumption data cubes for 208 countries/territories,797 sub-country administrative divisions in 29 countries,42 fuel types,and 52 sectors,with the fusion of activity data from 24 international statistics and 65 regional/local *** CO_(2)emissions from fossil fuel combustion and cement production in 1970–2021 were then estimated with highly-resolved source category(1,484 of total)and sub-country information(797 of total).Specifically,73%of global CO_(2)emissions in 2021 were estimated with sub-country information,providing considerably improved spatial resolution for global CO_(2)emission *** the support of detailed information,the dynamics of global CO_(2)emissions across sectors and fuel types were presented,representing the evolution of global economy and progress of climate *** differences of sectoral contribution were found across sub-country administrative divisions within a given country,revealing the uneven distribution of energy and economic structure among different *** estimates were generally consistent with existing databases at aggregated level for global total or large emitters,while large discrepancies were observed for middle and small *** database,named the Multiresolution Emission Inventory model for Climate and air pollution research(MEIC)is publicly available through http://*** with highly-resolved information and timely update,which provides an independent carbon emission accounting data source for climate rese

Bisphenol A,a hazardous endocrine disruptor,poses significant environmental and human health threats,demanding efficient removal *** biological methods struggle to treat BPA wastewater with high chloride(Cl^(-))levels due to the toxicity of high Cl^(-)to *** persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes(PS-AOPs)have shown promise in removing BPA from high Cl^(-)wastewater,their widespread application is always limited by the high energy and chemical usage *** we show that peroxymonosulfate(PMS)degrades BPA in situ under high Cl^(-)*** was completely removed in 30 min with 0.3 mM PMS and 60 mM Cl^(-).Non-radical reactive species,notably free chlorine species,including dissolved Cl_(2)(l),HClO,and ClO−dominate the removal of BPA at temperatures ranging from 15 to 60℃.Besides,free radicals,including•OH and Cl_(2)^(•−),contribute minimally to BPA removal at 60°*** on the elementary kinetic models,the production rate constant of Cl_(2)(l)(32.5 M^(−1) s^(−1))is much higher than HClO(6.5×10^(−4) M^(−1) s^(−1)),and its degradation rate with BPA(2×10^(7) M^(−1) s^(−1))is also much faster than HClO(18 M^(−1) s^(−1)).Furthermore,the degradation of BPA by Cl_(2)(l)and HClO were enlarged by 10-and 18-fold at 60℃ compared to room temperature,suggesting waste heat utilization can enhance treatment ***,this research provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of direct PMS introduction for removing organic micropollutants from high Cl^(-)*** further underscores the critical kinetics and mechanisms within the PMS/Cl⁻system,presenting a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable alternative for wastewater treatment.

Nitrate is an important component of atmospheric particulate matter and affects air quality,climate,human health,and the *** was previously considered a permanent sink for nitrogen oxides(NO_(x)).However,this viewpoint has been challenged in recent years because growing research evidence has shown the transformation of nitrate into NO_(x)(i.e.,renoxification).The photolysis of nitrate/HNO3,especially in the particulate phase or adsorbed on particles,can be a significant renoxification process in the *** formation and photolysis of nitrate in aerosol not only change the diurnal variation of NO_(x),but also provide long-distance transport of NO_(x)in the form of nitrate,which affects local and regional atmospheric chemistry and air *** review summarizes recent advances in the fundamental understanding of the photolysis of nitrate/HNO3 under various atmospheric conditions,with a focus on mechanisms and key factors affecting the *** atmospheric implications are discussed and future research is recommended.

Distribution of antibiotic resistance genes and their association with bacteria and viruses in decentralized sewage treatment facilities

The distribution of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs)has been intensively studied in large-scale wastewater treatment plants and livestock ***,small-scale decentralized sewage treatment facilities must also be explored due to their possible direct exposure to *** this study,six wastewater treatment facilities in developed rural areas in eastern China were investigated to understand their risks of spreading *** metagenomics and network analysis tools,ARGs and bacterial and viral communities were identified in the influent(INF)and effluent(EFF)*** dominant ARGs belonged to the bacitracin class,which are different from most of municipal wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs).The dominant hosts of ARGs are Acidovorax in bacterial communities and Prymnesiovirus in viral ***,a positive relationship was found between ARGs and *** ARGs significantly correlated with phages were all hosted by specific genera of bacteria,indicating that phages had contributed to the ARG’s proliferation in sewage treatment *** significant concern on the possible enhanced risks caused by bacteria,viruses and their related ARGs in decentralized sewage treatment facilities is necessary.
