Monitoring fossil fuel CO_(2) emissions from co-emitted NO_(2) observed from space:progress,challenges,and future perspectives

Developing an anthropogenic carbon dioxides(CO_(2))emissions monitoring and verification support(MVS)capacity is essential to support the Global Stocktake(GST)and ratchet up Nationally Determined Contributions(NDCs).The 2019 IPCC refinement proposes top-down inversed CO_(2)emissions,primarily from fossil fuel(FFCO_(2)),as a viable emission *** substantial progress in directly inferring FFCO_(2)emissions from CO_(2)observations,substantial challenges remain,particularly in distinguishing local CO_(2)enhancements from the high background due to the long atmospheric ***,using short-lived and co-emitted nitrogen dioxide(NO_(2))as a proxy in FFCO_(2)emission inversion has gained *** methodology is broadly categorized into plume-based and emission ratios(ERs)-based inversion *** the plume-based methods,NO_(2)observations act as locators,constraints,and validators for deciphering CO_(2)plumes downwind of sources,typically at point source and city *** ERs-based inversion approach typically consists of two steps:inferring NO_(2)-based nitrogen oxides(NO_(x))emissions and converting NO_(x)to CO_(2)emissions using CO_(2)-to-NO_(x)*** integrating NO_(2)observations into FFCO_(2)emission inversion offers advantages over the direct CO_(2)-based methods,uncertainties persist,including both structural and data-related *** these uncertainties is a primary focus for future research,which includes deploying nextgeneration satellites and developing advanced inversion ***,data caveats are necessary when releasing data to users to prevent potential *** NO_(2)-based CO_(2)emission inversion requires interdisciplinary collaboration across multiple communities of remote sensing,emission inventory,transport model improvement,and atmospheric inversion algorithm development.

A probe into the acid deposition mitigation path in China over the last four decades and beyond

China currently has the highest acid deposition globally, yet research on its status, impacts, causes and controls is lacking. Here, we compiled data and calculated critical loads regarding acid deposition. The results showed that the abatement measures in China have achieved a sharp decline in the emissions of acidifying pollutants and a continuous recovery of precipitation p H, despite the drastic growth in the economy and energy consumption. However, the risk of ecological acidification and eutrophication showed no significant decrease. With similar emission reductions, the decline in areas at risk of acidification in China(7.0%) lags behind those in Europe(20%) or the USA(15%). This was because, unlike Europe and the USA, China's abatement strategies primarily target air quality improvement rather than mitigating ecological impacts. Given that the area with the risk of eutrophication induced by nitrogen deposition remained at 13%of the country even under the scenario of achieving the dual targets of air quality and carbon dioxide mitigation in 2035, we explored an enhanced ammonia abatement pathway. With a further 27% reduction in ammonia by 2035, China could largely eliminate the impacts of acid deposition. This research serves as a valuable reference for China's future acid deposition control and for other nations facing similar challenges.

Adsorption of typical NDMA precursors by superfine powdered activated carbon:Critical role of particle size reduction

control of N-nitrosodimethylamine(NDMA)in drinking water could be achieved by removing its precursors as one practical ***,superfine powdered activated carbons with a diameter of about 1μm(SPACs)were successfully prepared by grinding powdered activated carbon(PAC,D50=24.3μm)and applied to remove model NDMA precursors,***(RAN)and nizatidine(NIZ).Results fromgrain diameter experiments demonstrated that the absorption velocity increased dramatically with decreasing particle size,and the maximum increase in k2 was 26.8-folds for RAN and 33.4-folds for ***,kinetic experiments explained that rapid absorption could be attributed to the acceleration of intraparticle diffusion due to the shortening of the diffusion ***,performance comparison experiments suggested that the removal of RAN and NIZ(C_(0)=0.5 mg/L)could reach 61.3%and 60%,respectively,within 5 min,when the dosage of SAPC-1.1(D_(50)=1.1μm)was merely 5 mg/L,while PAC-24.3 could only eliminate 17.5%and 18.6%.The adsorption isotherm was well defined by Langmuir isotherm model,indicating that the adsorption of RAN/NIZ was a monolayer coverage *** adsorption of RAN or NIZ by SAPC-1.1 and PAC-24.3 was strongly pH dependent,and high adsorption capacity could be observed under the condition of pH>pk_(a)+*** coexistence of humic acid(HA)had no significant effect on the adsorption performance because RAN/NIZ may be coupled with HA and removed *** coexistence of anions had little effect on the adsorption *** study is expected to provide an alternative strategy for drinking water safety triggered by NDMA.

Temporal variations, sources, and regional transport of carbonaceous species in PM2.5 in a northern China city: the role of domestic heating

Domestic heating is an important source of carbonaceous aerosols in northern China in winter. The seasonal variations, sources, and regional transport of carbonaceous species in PM2.5 in Yuncheng in the winter and summer of 2020–2021 were investigated in this study, with a particular focus on the role of domestic heating. Meanwhile, the pollution characteristics of carbonaceous aerosols in Beijing in winter were also investigated for comparison. The mass concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) and their contributions to PM2.5 were significantly enhanced during the heating period compared to other sampling periods in Yuncheng, however, no obvious differences were observed before and during the heating periods in Beijing. Source apportionment results showed that the heating related emission (50.9%) was the dominant source of total carbon in Yuncheng in the heating period, while vehicular emission (49.6%) was dominant in summer. Combing the positive matrix factorization (PMF) and potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis, it was concluded that both local and regional heating activities contributed highly to carbonaceous aerosols in Yuncheng. It would be therefore of great environmental benefits to promote the clean residential heating transition in Yuncheng and other similar cities. Single atom catalysts(SACs)have become one of research focuses in heterogeneous catalysis for their effective utilization of active metal atoms and unique properties in various catalytic ***,due to their high surface energy,noble metal single atoms like Pt tend to migrate and agglomerate to form larger clusters or nanoparticles,which makes it a challenge to fabricate noble metal SACs with high loading(>5 wt.%).Furthermore,the decisive factors of loading maximum are still not ***,we reported a manganese oxide supported Pt SAC with a high loading of 5.6 wt.%synthesized by selective dissolution *** pre-stabilization of Pt by coordinated oxygen and the abundant surface defects of support are the determinants of high *** Pt SAC exhibited much better H_(2)spill-over and hydrocarbon oxidation abilities with lower adsorption and dissociation energies than the manganese oxide support because of its local electronic structure with less repulsion.

A bacteria-based index of biotic integrity indicates aquatic ecosystem restoration

Intensive ecological interventions have been carried out in highly polluted shallow lakes to improve their environments and restore their ***,certain treatments,such as dredging polluted sediment and stocking fish,can impact the aquatic communities,including benthos and *** impacts can alter the composition and characteristics of aquatic communities,which makes community-based ecological assessments *** we develop a bacteria-based index of biotic integrity(IBI)that can clearly indicate the restoration of aquatic ecosystems with minimal artificial *** applied this method to a restored shallow lake during 3-year intensive ecological *** interventions reduced nutrients and heavy metals by 27.1%and 16.7%in the sediment,while the total organic carbon(TOC)increased by 8.0%due to the proliferation of ***,the abundance of sulfur-related metabolic pathways decreased by 10.5%as the responses to improved *** score of bacteria-based IBI,which is calculated based on the diversity,composition,and function of benthic bacterial communities,increased from 0.62 in 2018 to 0.81 in *** study not only provides an applicable method for aquatic ecological assessment under intensive artificial interventions but also extends the application of IBI to complex application scenarios,such as ecosystems with significantly different aquatic communities and comparisons between different basins.

Discovery of emerging organic pollutants in the atmosphere through an omics approach

Ambient air pollution,containing numerous known and hitherto unknown compounds,is a major risk factor for public *** discovery of harmful components is the prerequisite for pollution control;however,this raises a great challenge on recognizing previously unknown *** we systematically review the analytical techniques on air pollution in the framework of an omics approach,with a brief introduction on sample preparation and analysis,and in more detail,compounds prioritization and *** high-resolution mass spectrometry(HRMS,typically coupled with chromatography),the complicated environmental matrix can be digitalized into“fullcomponent”data.A key step to discover emerging compounds is the prioritization of compounds from massive *** fingerprints,suspect lists and biological effects are the most vital untargeted strategies for comprehensively screening critical and hazardous ***,compressed data of compounds can be identified at various confidence levels according to exact mass and the derived molecular formula,MS libraries,and authentic *** an omics approach on full-component data provides a paradigm for discovering emerging air pollutants;nonetheless,new technological advancements of instruments and databases are warranted for further tracking the environmental behaviors,hence to evaluate the health risk of key pollutants.

Effects of surface fluoride modification on TiO_(2)for the photocatalytic oxidation of toluene

In the present study,we investigated the influence of surface fluorine(F)on TiO_(2)for the photocatalytic oxidation(PCO)of ***_(2)modified with different F content was prepared and *** was found that with the increasing of F content,the toluene conversion rate first increased and then ***,CO_(2)mineralization efficiency showed the opposite *** on the characterizations,we revealed that F substitutes the surface hydroxyl of TiO_(2)to form the structure of≡*** presence of the appropriate amount of surface≡Ti-F on TiO_(2)greatly enhanced the separation of photogenerated carriers,which facilitated the generation of·OH and promoted the activity for the PCO of *** was further revealed that the increase of only·OH promoted the conversion of toluene to ring-containing intermediates,causing the accumulation of intermediates and then conversely inhibited the·OH generation,which led to the decrease of the CO_(2)mineralization *** above results could provide guidance for the rational design of photocatalysts for toluene oxidation.
