Economic activities release pollutants and carbon (mainly CO2) directly by consuming energy resources and indirectly by using energy-intensive goods. This research put forwards a grey model (GM) (1, 1) based input–output model (GIOM) for simulating pollutants and CO2 emissions in Fujian Province under varied socio-economic development scenarios. Major findings are: (i) in the planning period, Agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery (AGR) is the main sector for wastewater emissions in the planning period, and manufacturing and materials and energy conversion (MEC) sectors will be the main sectors for emissions of waste gases and CO2 in the planning period;(ii) through the simulation, the total energy consumption in Fujian Province increases by 13.53–51.08%, Metal and nonmetal products (MAN), MEC and Wholesale and retail transportation and warehousing (WRT) are the main energy consumers;(iii) the COD, NH3–N, SO2, and NOx emissions decrease 24.55–70.11%, 24.53–70.83%, 27.11–70.55% and 22.47–72.00% over time, and the CO2 emissions range from an increase of 36.35% to a decrease of 5.98% over time. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Halobenzoquinones(HBQs)are highly toxic disinfection byproducts(DBPs)and are also precursors of other DBPs such as trihalomethanes(THMs).The formation of THMs from HBQs during chlorine-only and UV/chlorine processes with or without bromide was investigated *** functional theory(DFT)reactivity descriptors were also applied to predict the nucleophilic/electrophilic reactive sites on HBQs and *** results were combined to explain the different behaviors of 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone(2,6-DCBQ)and tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone(TCBQ)and to propose mechanism for the promoting roles of UV and hydroxylation of HBQs in THMs *** UV/chlorine,UV significantly enhanced THMs formation from 2,6-DCBQ compared to chlorine-only,mainly due to the production of OH-DCBQ^(*).Excited 2,6-DCBQ^(*)by UV benefited nucleophilic hydrolysis to produce OH-DCBQ^(*),which favored electrophilic attack by chlorine,thereby inducing more THMs ***/chlorine modestly promoted THMs formation from TCBQ compared to *** of TCBQ and UV irradiation were both important in promoting THMs formation due to the high electrophilic property of OH-TCBQ and TCBQ^(*).Meanwhile,hydroxylation of HBQs and CHCl3 formation were enhanced at higher *** work suggested that enhanced formation of THMs from HBQs should be considered in the application of combined UV and chlorine processes.

Emissions of volatile organic compounds from Chinese coal-fired power plants: Characteristics, source profile, inventories, and impacts

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are key precursors for secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and ozone, imposing severe impacts on human health and environment. Considering the massive coal consumption, coal fired power plants (CFPPs) in China are non-negligible VOCs contributors, whose emission characteristics remain inadequately understood. Here, we investigated emission characteristics of 117 VOCs by field tests in four typical CFPPs, and a latest localized CFPPs source profile was compiled by integrating literature reviews. Then speciated-VOCs emission inventories for 2018–2022 were established based on dynamic emission factors and unit-level activity data. The results suggested that oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) constituted the dominant group (76.5 %), with propionaldehyde (32.0 %) and formaldehyde (24.5 %) being the predominant species. OVOCs (93.2 %) and aromatics (77.4 %) were identified as the primary contributors to ozone and SOA, respectively. Driven by both the rise in coal consumption and technological advancements, nationwide VOCs emissions decreased from 83,393 t in 2018 to 53,251 t in 2022. Regional disparities and varying rates of decline in provincial emissions were evident, with VOCs emissions predominantly concentrated in northern and eastern provinces. Neimenggu, Shandong, Shanxi, Jiangsu, and Guangdong were identified as the top five provinces with the highest emissions. We believe this study would be conducive to a more comprehensive understanding and effective control of VOCs emissions from CFPPs in China. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Biodiesel application, such as using waste cooking oil biodiesel in Shanghai, China, is a sustainable solution that addresses the challenges posed by escalating air pollution, energy security, and climate change. Future efforts may involve blending biodiesel from alternative sources like crude palm oil with diesel in China. This study tested a China V heavy-duty diesel vehicle equipped with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system using various palm oil biodiesel blended fuels (i.e., B0, B5, B10, and B20). The findings indicated that using biodiesel blends led to reductions in carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), and particle number (PN) emissions compared to B0, while nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions remained similar. Higher biodiesel content significantly reduced petroleum diesel consumption, but no statistically significant differences were found in total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and fuel consumption. Various factors such as vehicle speed, payload, and cold starts influence tailpipe emissions and fuel consumption. Specifically, high-speed phases notably reduced CO, HC, and PN emissions with the use of biodiesel blends. Lower payloads were linked to decreased CO2 emissions and fuel consumption but increased NOX emissions. Cold starts increased HC and NOX emissions, especially with higher biodiesel blending ratios. These results can provide valuable empirical insights into palm oil biodiesel emissions. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Increasing cases of lake eutrophication globally have raised concerns among stakeholders,and particularly in *** the causes of eutrophication in waterways is essential for effective pollution prevention and *** Xingkai Lake is part of and connected to Xingkai(Khanka)Lake,a boundary lake between China and *** this study,we investigated the spatio-temporal variabilities in water quality(i.e.,dissolved oxygen(DO),total nitrogen(TN),total phosphorus(TP),chemical oxygen demand(CODMn)and ammonium-nitrogen(NH4+-N))in Xiao Xingkai Lake,from 2012 to 2014,after which a Trophic Level Index was used to evaluate trophic status,in addition to the factors influencing water quality variation in the *** DO,TN,TP,CODMn and NH4+-N concentrations were 0.44-15.57,0.16-5.11,0.01-0.45,0.16-48.31,and 0.19-0.78 mg/L,*** to the environmental Quality Standards for surface water(GB 3838-2002)in China,the lake transitioned to an oligotrophic status in 2013 and 2014 from a mesotrophic status in 2012,TN and TP concentrations were the key factors influencing water quality of Xiao Xingkai ***-para-metric test results showed that sampling time and sites had significant effects on water *** quality was worse in summer and in tourism and aquaculture areas,followed by agricultural drainage ***,lake water trophic status fluctuated between medium eutrophic and light eutrophic status from September 2012 to September 2014,and was negatively correlated with water *** quality in tourism and aquaculture sites were medium eutrophic,while in agricultural areas were light *** to the results,high water-level fluctuations and anthropogenic activities were the key factor driving variability in physicochemical parameters associated with water quality in Xiao Xingkai Lake.

Repercussions of COVID-19 pandemic on solid waste generation and management strategies

It has been over ten months since the beginning of the 2019 coronavirus disease(COVID-2019),and its impact on solid waste management,especially medical waste,is becoming *** study systematically reviews the potential influences of the COVID-19 pandemic on medical waste,personal protection equipment waste and municipal solid waste(MSW),and discusses the corresponding measures and policies of solid waste management in typical *** results show that the generation of medical waste from the pandemic increased significantly,with 18%‒425%*** is estimated that the daily output of COVID-19 medical waste increased from 200 t/d on Feb.22 to over 29000 t/d at the end of September 2020 throughout the *** use of personal protective equipment will continue to grow in the long-term,while the blockade and isolation measures greatly reduced the volume of commercial waste,especially for tourist cities,and part of this waste was transferred to household ***’attitudes and behavior toward food waste have changed due to the COVID-19 *** response to the pandemic,international organizations and several countries have issued new policies and guidelines and adjusted their management strategies for medical waste and MSW *** pandemic has brought specific challenges to the disposal capacity of medical waste *** has also brought about the stagnation of policies related to the reduction of plastic products and waste *** study will provide some useful information for managers and governmental officials on effective solid waste management during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cumulative effects of ocean currents and land-based pollution on the abundance and composition of coastal zooplankton

Coastal waters pose a serious threat of eutrophication due to land-based pollution. The excess nutrients change the planktonic abundance and composition. Ocean currents dominate the exchange and mixing of seawater to play a particularly important role in shaping zooplankton dispersion. However, the mechanism of zooplankton response to the joint action of currents and land-based pollution in coastal waters is rarely reported. The mechanism was analyzed using partial least squares path models (PLS-PMs) and data from Shantou Bay of the southwestern Taiwan Strait with complex currents and excess land-based nutrients input in 2021. 262 species of zooplankton have been identified, with geometric mean values for seasonal biomass and abundance ranging from 23.79 mg m−3 to 51.27 mg m−3 and 28.48 ind m−3 to 95.51 ind m−3. The seasonal water masses and zooplankton communities were divided into 7 masses and 9 clusters, respectively. Zooplankton abundance and clusters correlate with water masses driven by seasonal variations of currents and runoff. The seasonal patterns of zooplankton dominant species and indicator species directly confirm the currents and runoff changing in seasons. Eutrophication and malnutrition are two additional factors affecting zooplankton communities in the sea. Poor phytoplankton is a key limiting factor in spatial patterns of zooplankton communities during the Northeast Monsoon. Eutrophication threats to the stability of the large zooplankton community. These findings align with the results of PLS-PMs for zooplankton in response to environments, which indicated that zooplankton communities were regulated by currents and land-based pollution inputs altering chemical environments and hydrological conditions. © 2025

Adsorption of Gas-Phase Sulfur Mustard on environmental Water/Ice Films

Sulfur mustard (HD), a highly toxic vesicant used as a Chemical Warfare Agent (CWA), can remain for a few weeks once leaked into the environment. This work investigated the mass uptake of sulfur mustard vapor on thin water and ice films as well as air-water/ice interfacial and bulk partitioning of sulfur mustard under several typical environmental conditions by using a flow tube reactor. The partition constant of sulfur mustard in the sea water was close to that of pure water, and greater than that in the river water. The effects of water properties (including salinity, humic -like substance contents, and surface tension) on the air-water partitioning of HD were investigated. The adsorption enthalpies and entropies of HD uptake in thin water film were obtained from the temperature dependence was 20.76±1.08 kJ/mol and 71.58±3.91 J/mol. The quasi-liquid layer on the ice surface appeared to play a crucial role in the adsorption process as the ice thickness decreased. The data collected in this study are essential in developing effective strategies for managing and mitigating the risks associated with the leakage of chemical warfare agents containing sulfur mustard. © 2023, The Authors.
