Darknet data mining: A canadian cyber-crime perspective

Exploring the darknet can be a daunting task;this paper explores the application of data mining the darknet within a Canadian cybercrime perspective. Measuring activity through marketplace analysis and vendor attribution has proven difficult in the past. Observing different aspects of the darknet and implementing methods of monitoring and collecting data in the hopes of connecting contributions to the darknet marketplaces to and from Canada. The significant findings include a small Canadian presence, measured the product categories, and attribution of one cross-marketplace vendor through data visualization. The results were made possible through a multi-stage processing pipeline, including data crawling, scraping, and parsing. The primary future works include enhancing the pipeline to include other media, such as web forums, chatrooms, and emails. Applying machine learning models like natural language processing or sentiment analysis could prove beneficial during investigations. © 2021, CC BY.

As a CDIO collaborating member, sheridan’s School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering technology (MEET) maintains a curriculum that is deeply rooted in skills-based learning, experiential learning, and engineering design. In an effort to ensure our graduates are consistently agile and ready for the workforce, we are taking proactive measures to further improve their learning experiences. An important challenge still impeding our students’ knowledge acquisition is the perception that program courses have disjointed learning outcomes. In reality, the course map of programs is carefully designed in such a way that technical skills acquired in particular courses gradually build on each other. Despite the traditional existence of prerequisites and co-requisites, the inaccurate view that courses function independently persists among students and, occasionally, among faculty members. One feasible approach to tackle this pedagogical challenge is to combine various courses into an integrated learning block (ILB) having a unified mission and objective. In general, an ILB is formed by the interconnectivity of at least two courses. At sheridan's School of MEET, we are applying an ILB with three engineering courses offered within the same semester for all of our Bachelor’s of Engineering degree programs. The ILB deliverables are based on the design of a chosen engineering system or subunit in a project-based learning (PBL) environment. The rationale of this paper is to share sheridan’s framework for implementing an ILB in engineering programs and to examine the opportunities and challenges related to this type of curriculum design. In particular, we will discuss the methodology by which courses are selected to form an ILB while taking into account their appropriateness for an industry-driven PBL. Vast literature on experimental design extends from Fisher and Snedecor to the modern day. When data lies beyond the assumption of univariate normality, nonparametric methods including rank based statistics and permutation tests are enlisted. The permutation test is a versatile exact nonparametric significance test that requires drastically fewer assumptions than similar parametric tests. The main downfall of the permutation test is high computational cost making this approach laborious for complex data and sophisticated experimental designs and completely infeasible in any application requiring speedy results such as high throughput streaming data. We rectify this problem through application of concentration inequalities and thus propose a computation free permutation test-i.e. a permutation-less permutation test. This general framework is applied to multivariate, matrix-valued, and functional data. We improve these concentration bounds via a novel incomplete beta transform. We extend our theory from 2-sample to k-sample testing through the use of weakly dependent Rademacher chaoses and modified decoupling inequalities. We test this methodology on classic functional data sets including the Berkeley growth curves and the phoneme dataset. The Illinois Express Quantum Network (IEQNET) is a program to realize metropolitan scale quantum networking over deployed optical fiber using currently available technology. IEQNET consists of multiple sites that are geographically dispersed in the Chicago metropolitan area. Each site has one or more quantum nodes (Q-Nodes) representing the communication parties in a quantum network. Q-Nodes generate or measure quantum signals such as entangled photons and communicate the measurement results via standard, classical signals and conventional networking processes. The entangled photons in IEQNET nodes are generated at multiple wavelengths, and are selectively distributed to the desired users via transparent optical switches. Here we describe the network architecture of IEQNET, including the Internet-inspired layered hierarchy that leverages softwaredefined networking (SDN) technology to perform traditional wavelength routing and assignment between the Q-Nodes. Specifically, SDN decouples the control and data planes, with the control plane being entirely implemented in the classical domain. We also discuss the IEQNET processes that address issues associated with synchronization, calibration, network monitoring, and scheduling. An important goal of IEQNET is to demonstrate the extent to which the control plane classical signals can co-propagate with the data plane quantum signals in the same fiber lines (quantum-classical signal "coexistence"). This goal is furthered by the use of tunable narrow-band optical filtering at the receivers and, at least in some cases, a wide wavelength separation between the quantum and classical channels. We envision IEQNET to aid in developing robust and practical quantum networks by demonstrating metro-scale quantum communication tasks such as entanglement distribution and quantum-state teleportation. We consider Khintchine type inequalities on the p-th moments of vectors of N k-wise independent Rademacher random variables. We show that an analogue of Khintchine’s inequality holds, with a constant N1/2−k/2p, when k is even. We then show that this result is sharp for k = 2;in particular, a version of Khintchine’s inequality for sequences of pairwise Rademacher variables cannot hold with a constant independent of N. We also characterize the cases of equality and show that, although the vector achieving equality is not unique, it is unique (up to law) among the smaller class of exchangable vectors of pairwise independent Rademacher random variables.
