The integration of Internet of Things (IoT)-based highway bridge structural health monitoring (HBSHM) and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) plays an essential role in detecting damage for large and complex bridge structures. The HBSHM provides ITS with bridge health condition information for real-time traffic management. The ITS provides HBSHM with the required traffic data to improve the HBSHM system’s accuracy and reliability. Node deployment optimization (NDO) is critical in HBSHM as sensor node deployment directly affects the quality of collected data. To better solve the NDO problem in HBSHM, a novel hybrid cat-artificial fish swarm algorithm (CAT-AFSA) based on the Artificial Fish Swarm Algorithm (AFSA) and Cat Swarm optimization (CSO) is proposed in this paper. The algorithm introduces seeking and tracing behaviors of CSO into AFSA, which effectively expands the search space of artificial fish and reduces the blind search of it. The performance of the CAT-AFSA is first tested using four benchmark functions, and then its validity and feasibility for the NDO are verified using an engineering example. The simulations demonstrate that the CAT-AFSA has better search performance and computational efficiency compared with the AFSA and CSO. The CAT-AFSA has a broad application prospect in the field of NDO in civil engineering.

Understanding clinical features and risk factors associated with COVID-19 mortality is needed to early identify critically ill patients, initiate treatments and prevent mortality. A retrospective study on COVID-19 patients referred to a tertiary hospital in Iran between March and November 2020 was conducted. COVID-19-related mortality and its association with clinical features including headache, chest pain, symptoms on computerized tomography (CT), hospitalization, time to infection, history of neurological disorders, having a single or multiple risk factors, fever, myalgia, dizziness, seizure, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and anorexia were investigated. Based on the investigation outcome, decision tree and dimension reduction algorithms were used to identify the aforementioned risk factors. Of the 3008 patients (mean age 59.3 ± 18.7 years, 44% women) with COVID-19, 373 died. There was a significant association between COVID-19 mortality and old age, headache, chest pain, low respiratory rate, oxygen saturation < 93%, need for a mechanical ventilator, having symptoms on CT, hospitalization, time to infection, neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases and having a risk factor or multiple risk factors. In contrast, there was no significant association between mortality and gender, fever, myalgia, dizziness, seizure, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and anorexia. Our results might help identify early symptoms related to COVID-19 and better manage patients according to the extracted decision tree. The proposed ML models identified a number of clinical features and risk factors associated with mortality in COVID-19 patients. These models if implemented in a clinical setting might help to early identify patients needing medical attention and care. However, more studies are needed to confirm these findings. © 2023, The Author(s).

Extracting typical operational scenarios is essential for making flexible decisions in the dispatch of a new power system. This study proposed a novel deep time series aggregation scheme (DTSAs) to generate typical operational scenarios, considering the large amount of historical operational snapshot data. Specifically, DTSAs analyze the intrinsic mechanisms of different scheduling operational scenario switching to mathematically represent typical operational scenarios. A gramian angular summation field (GASF) based operational scenario image encoder was designed to convert operational scenario sequences into high-dimensional spaces. This enables DTSAs to fully capture the spatiotemporal characteristics of new power systems using deep feature iterative aggregation models. The encoder also facilitates the generation of typical operational scenarios that conform to historical data distributions while ensuring the integrity of grid operational snapshots. Case studies demonstrate that the proposed method extracted new fine-grained power system dispatch schemes and outperformed the latest high-dimensional feature-screening methods. In addition, experiments with different new energy access ratios were conducted to verify the robustness of the proposed method. DTSAs enables dispatchers to master the operation experience of the power system in advance, and actively respond to the dynamic changes of the operation scenarios under the high access rate of new energy. In this work, the event-triggering-based resilient H_∞ load frequency control (LFC) scheme under denial-of-service (DoS) attacks is developed for multi-area cyber–physical power system (MA-CPPS) with electric vehicles (EVs). In MA-CPPS, the sampled measurements are transmitted through the communication network, which may be subjected to the energy-limited DoS attack with a resilient index of maximum allowable continuous data losses. Meanwhile, a novel adaptive event-triggering mechanism (AETM) characterized by parameters disturbances and dynamic adjustment mechanism of triggering threshold can effectively reduce the occupation of network bandwidth and computational burden in practical operation of sampled-data LFC in MA-CPPS. Hence a sampled-data LFC model of considering energy-limited DoS attack and AETM is established firstly. Then based on a novel AETM transmission interval-dependent loop functional approach, a resilient H_∞ state-feedback controller is designed with guaranteed H_∞ performance and resilient index of energy-limited DoS attack. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed scheme are verified by one-area and three-areas LFC CPPS. © 2023 The Authors

A latent factor analysis (LFA) model can efficiently address a high-dimensional and sparse (HiDS) matrix with a stochastic gradient descent (SGD) algorithm. However, an SGD-based LFA model's performance depends heavily on its hyper-parameters. The popular method is based on grid-search, which fails because of expensive computation and time-consuming. Aiming at implementing a hyper-parameter-free LFA model, this study proposes an adaptive moment estimation-incorporated particle swarm optimization (Adam-PSO) algorithm that efficiently addresses the premature issues in a PSO algorithm. With achieved the hyper-parameter adaptation in an SGD-based LFA model, an Adam-PSO-based LFA (APL) model possessing hyper-parameter-free training is further implemented. Empirical studies on four HiDS matrices indicate that compared with state-of-the-art models with hyper-parameter adaptation settings, an APL model achieves the most efficient hyper-parameter-free training and highly competitive prediction accuracy for missing data of an HiDS matrix. Hence, it fits the need of real applications with high scalability and efficiency.

With the continuous expansion of the application field of multi-mode synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system, which can satisfy different imaging demands. In order to get SAR image, it is necessary to image the echo received by multi-mode SAR system. However, the huge computation of the imaging algorithm affects the processing efficiency of SAR system. The power of Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) can suffice the increasing demands in processing, which has been used in many common areas. The acceleration effect of GPU is very obvious compared with Central Processing Unit (CPU) platform. This paper proposed a Chirp Scaling acceleration algorithm based on GPU for multi-mode SAR, and comparison of computational time over traditional CPU and GPU platform. The experimental results shows that the GPU accelerated SAR imaging algorithm can achieve a good acceleration effect. © 2020 Institution of engineering and technology. All rights reserved.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems can be used for discovery and surveillance. According to the current requirements, accurate ship detection is becoming more and more important. However, the accuracy of traditional ship detection algorithm is not satisfying in complex scene. As a consequence, this paper proposes a novel method for detecting ships within SAR imagery using Gabor feature and Two Parameter Constant False Alarm Rate (2P-CFAR) detection technique. First, feature extraction was performed by using Gabor filter. Then, combined with the extracted orientation feature, the ship recognition of SAR image is obtained by 2P-CFAR detector. Finally, false alarms among the candidate targets were removed by geometric features of the ships. To prove the rationality of this method, experiments were carried with two high-resolution Gaofen-3 satellite SAR images in open sea background. The experimental results show that the presented method has preferable performance in the accuracy of ship identification. © 2020 Institution of engineering and technology. All rights reserved.

Nasotracheal intubation is a crucial emergency procedure that can improve the survival rate of injured patients. Compared to orotracheal intubation, nasotracheal intubation offers greater stability and comfort. However, due to the large curvature of the cavity, the procedure is highly challenging and requires skilled medical staff, which can be a shortage in emergencies and delay patient rescue. To solve this problem, a flexible and portable robot for nasotracheal intubation has been developed in this paper. The robot incorporates a continuum catheter, allowing the shape of the endotracheal tube’s distal section to be controllable and making it easier to pass through the nasal cavity into the trachea. An endoscope is integrated into the distal section of the catheter to make the intubation process more intuitive, allowing doctors to observe the injuries through endoscopic images and adjust the treatment plan. Additionally, the robot is designed with a quick-detachable structure, enabling aseptic and low-cost intubation procedures. The structure and circuitry of the robot are designed for portability, with a smaller size and lower power consumption, which can work for a long time just powered by batteries. Finally, experiments on a mannequin validate that the robotic system effectively reduces the difficulty of tracheal intubation, enabling even non-medically trained operators to complete the procedure with the assistance of the robot.

In this paper, we examine the synchronization problem in nonlinearly-coupled multi-weighted complex networks that contain uncertainties and varying delays. The complexities of these networks arise from the presence of both internal time-varying delays and multiple coupling time-varying delays. To address this challenge, we employ impulsive pinning control schemes and incorporate the impulsive pinning control ratio in the construction of the Lyapunov function, which allows us to determine the optimal number of pinned nodes at each pulse instant. Our analysis, based on stability theory, provides synchronization criteria that are strongly dependent on the multi-weights and time delays present in the network. Finally, we present numerical simulations of a delayed complex network to demonstrate the validity and efficacy of our derived theoretical results. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
