Vulnerability analysis and modeling false data injection attack against voltage source converter in renewable generation power system

With the increasing penetration of renewable resources, more power electronic devices that need communi-cation with control centers may bring a novel risk of cyber attacks. This paper investigates the vulnerability of the hierarchical control and proposes a false data injection attack (FDIA) constructing algorithm against voltage source converters. The attack can be accomplished via a physical attack generator or falsification via attacking supervisory control and data acquisition system. By developing the FDIA model against state estimation, the proposed attack model can circumvent bad data detection in the secondary control loop. The tests are carried out on a single converter infinite bus benchmark and an IEEE 34-bus system. The results show that the proposed attack model can mislead the system to produce threatening oscillation.

Smart Grid is aimed to incorporate monitoring, analysis, control and communication capabilities to improve reliability and energy efficiency. However, currently there is no enough sensor to provide information interface for the implementation of smart grid. Therefore, new types of sensors should be deployed to assist the implementation of smart grid. This paper proposes a novel scheme, in which new type of fiber optic sensors (as compared with traditional Farady effect based fiber optic sensor used in power system instrumentation) are used to provide multiple types of information for smart grid. The new Fiber Bragg Gratting (FBG) is advantageous in that it can collect variant types of information and can form a sensor network. A transmission line monitoring system with distributed fiber optic senor network is designed, and the procedures to evaluate the status of the overhead transmission line (such as sag, vibration, and galloping) are proposed. A testing setup is built at laboratory, and it is shown that the FBG sensor is capable of obtaining the comprehensive information for evaluating the status of the overhead transmission line.

A panoramic test system for intelligent substation based on wireless time synchronization technology

The organization and distribution of information in secondary system of intelligent substation is so complex that it is almost impossible to use traditional test approach to identify the drawbacks. A novel panoramic test method based on wireless time synchronization technology is presented and the corresponding system is developed. The proposed system performs debugging test of intelligent substation secondary system under steady-state and transient state based on numerical simulation of power network, distributed injection of synchronized signals, wireless time synchronization and data transmission, etc. Total design of the test system and implement scheme of wireless synchronization technology is described. And accuracy of synchronization has been verified. The developed system has been applied to the test of many intelligent substations under construction. It shows that the proposed approach improves the integrity and the efficiency of the test, achieving better test results. © State Grid Electric power Research Institute Press.

The failure of the fiber channel of the measurement and protection device of power system may lead to protection failure and system out of control. This greatly affects the safety and reliability of system operating. First, this paper discusses the fiber communication method and its channel fault diagnosis method of fiber pilot protection devices, and designs an online monitoring method that cooperates with the physical links and communication status of those devices. Second, using uncertainty communication fingerprint detection technology, it can diagnose some uncertain issues of protection information mis-transmitted, protection device refusing to move and mis-operation. Finally, taking a certain transmission line protection system equipped with optical fiber communication as test case, the experimental results verify that the proposed diagnosis method has good effectiveness and accuracy in diagnosing fiber channel faults.

Multi-objective resilient recovery strategy for urban wind-solar-MPS-EV electric system after disastrous events

The situation in an urban distribution network becomes intricate under high -impact, low -probability events. Furthermore, the growing quantity of components within the urban distribution network renders their analysis more challenging. Thus, the desired recovery strategy should not only meet the requirements of restoration rates but also guarantee a stable power supply. To address this issue, this paper proposes a multi -objective decision analysis framework, which consists of EV user requirements, MPS routing, and emergency repair crew schedule, to generate a more precise recovery strategy. These objectives' dynamic behaviors in the transportation network are transformed into spatiotemporal characteristic variables and introduced into inequality constraints. Also, the Wasserstein generative adversarial network with gradient penalty is employed in this framework to characterize solar and wind realistic output. By minimizing the weighted sum composed of MPS operational costs, EV user expenses, load loss, and voltage fluctuation, an optimized recovery strategy is provided to the grid operator. Case studies investigate the effectiveness of recovery strategy in IEEE 33 -bus and 123 -bus benchmark systems. The results indicate the proposed approach can effectively handle complex scenarios achieving rapid and reliable restoration, while also preserving regular charging behavior and maintaining a stable power voltage supply.

In view of the complexity and low accuracy of existing fault diagnosis methods for transmission network, this paper proposes a novel transmission network fault diagnosis method combining simplified Bayesian network and fault decision table. First, using the information from Supervisory control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, there develop a fault area identification method, which utilizes circuit breaker (CB) information to isolate the components to build a fault area. In fault area, there creates the simplified Bayesian network to associate components with CBs. Further, the paper proposes a calculation method to calculate the fault probability of components in fault area, which is able to determine the suspicious component set. According to the sequence of relay actions, a fault decision table for the suspicious component set can be established. Finally, the fault condition of components, CBs and protection devices are diagnosed by comparing the local fault decision table. The above method greatly simplifies the complexity of Bayesian network, and the test results show that the speed and accuracy of its fault diagnosis have been significantly improved.

The whole-view test method for smart substation is a new test approach in which data transmission and time synchronization are implemented with wireless communication. This paper proposes a new time synchronization method based on wireless local area networks (WLAN) to satisfy the demand of synchronized triggering of data and time labeling in the system. The proposed method is implemented by integrating IEEE 1588 precise time protocol and IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard considering the specialty of transmission mechanism and data link in wireless communication, thus current available time synchronization method is improved. Simulation result shows that the precision of wireless time synchronization can be improved up to ±10 μs. © 2013 State Grid Electric power Research Institute Press.

This paper designs a hierarchical control system to improve control performance in a multi-terminal high voltage direct current based on the voltage source converter (VSC-MTDC) transmission system. In this control scheme, the primary control layer employs droop control, while the secondary control layer has developed optimal power flow control (OPF) for maintaining the variation of DC voltage and regulating the active power, and simultaneously minimizing power loss. In the event of a power disturbance or a change in power generation or consumption in the DC system, based on OPF results a new stable droop operating mode is established to stabilize DC voltage variation and regulate active power in the network. A ±400 kV four-terminal VSC-MTDC test network has been developed by using PSCAD and MATlab simulation tools to assess the proposed control scheme. The primary controller is designed in PSCAD, and the secondary optimum control technique is applied in MATlab. The results of steady-state and transient operating modes demonstrate that the planned control technique can achieve DC voltage regulation and keep active power, and minimize the power losses in the MTDC system. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper proposes an optimization model for community microgrid. The proposed scheme performs the scheduling of domestic appliances in a community microgrid using renewable energy resources. The objective of the scheme is to minimize the total operating cost in the whole community. The optimization problem is solved using the branch and bound algorithm. Blockchain (BC) technology is introduced for secure implementation of the proposed approach. Machine to machine interaction is facilitated using BC technology. The transaction information/ data is stored in the distributed shared ledger. The smart contract is used to automatically trigger the flow of electricity and the movement of funds once the necessary conditions are met. © 2019 IEEE.

Sag and galloping poses serious issues for uninterrupted operation of overhead high voltage transmission lines (HVTLs) under extreme weather conditions. This paper presents a novel approach to detect and estimate the change in sag and galloping alongside its feature characteristics (amplitude, frequency and degree of rotation). These parameters are estimated by means of magnetic field measurement with a sensor installed at support tower, and phase current measurement at the substation. It is observed that a variation in sag and conductor galloping induces a variation of magnetic field at sensor for same current amplitude. To this effect, galloping motion and magnetic field emanated from phase conductors during motion is first simulated. Then, two robust algorithms are designed to compare the simulated and measured magnetic fields to detect and quantify the change due to sag and galloping motion. This paper used empirical means to optimize our algorithms which are derived from integration solution provided by Biot-Savart law for magnetic field calculation of current carrying conductors. This reduces computational time for each iteration by 19e4 with error bounds well within the range of IEEE-644 Standard. The algorithms are validated by numerical simulations under various operating conditions.
